Today, we find ourselves in a highly complex world. Many people have lost confidence in institutions and one another, and pessimism and uncertainty prevail. More than ever, we need decision-makers who are capable of restoring people’s faith in a better future. And this would require all of us to look past our own narrow interests and come together to find collaborative solutions to address our global challenges.

With this in mind, over 250 leaders from the Forum’s Foundations Communities – Young Global Leaders, Social Entrepreneurs and Global Shapers – came together at Davos for the Annual Meeting 2017 and supported the official meeting theme, Responsive and Responsible Leadership. This report highlights how they leveraged the potential of Davos to bring attention to important societal challenges and advanced new initiatives and partnerships to take high potential solutions to scale.

Social Entrepreneurs

Nurturing Wellness

Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneurs were welcomed to the Annual Meeting through two powerful constellation exercises, which provided a safe space to build bonds of trust through peer-to-peer exchange and interactive discussions around common challenges, wellness and vulnerability. Social Entrepreneurs found the sessions enabled deep-conversations around leadership and life.

From Social Entrepreneurs to Systems Entrepreneurs

How are social enterprise models evolving beyond solving for immediate social needs to creating lasting systems change? Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneurs examined this question in an interactive workshop led by their peers Arbind Singh, Executive Director of Nidan, and Jordan Kassalow, Founder of VisionSpring and EYElliance. They explored themes such as:

– Distinguishing systems change from scale – Influencing actors in your ecosystem of impact – Identifying effective pathways and leverage points – Prioritizing coalition building and government partnerships – Discerning leadership challenges, skills and competencies

When reflecting on the session, Social Entrepreneurs said:

As systems change entrepreneurs, we have a great opportunity to redesign a system for the greater good, critically unpack our own belief systems, and redefine the definition of stakeholders involved so that they are perceived as agents of change. Martin Burt, Fundación Paraguay

We need to really look at under-performing or failing systems, then apply evidence-based solutions and drive advocacy to debunk these conventional systems with thought leadership and action that can then lead to a real change in a system. Gary White, Water.org

When approaching systems change to address a social problem, the need for an honest broker is critical. In identifying the honest broker you have to consider whether to create a new organization or enlist an existing one to build the coalition. Allen Wilcox, Board Member & Advisor, VillageReach

The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship is a global platform that aims to highlight and advance the world’s leading models of sustainable social innovation. It represents a community of over 330 late-stage social entrepreneurs, who operate as founders and CEOs in more than 70 countries. Enabling Community Impact

Young Global Leaders operate as a force for good, scaling individual and collective solutions to global challenges. To begin the Annual Meeting 2017, YGLs leveraged the community’s social capital to discover new ideas, insights and authentic connections to achieve their objectives during Davos. They also connected on their individual leadership journeys, seeking advice on professional transitions, reducing stress, improving health and making more time for their passions.

Which impact collaborations made progress at the Annual Meeting?

– Agora: Brazilian YGLs launched a new political movement to survey public opinion and develop a multi-sectoral agenda for Brazil. More than ever, Brazilians need courageous, informed and responsible leadership that connects people rather than divides them.

– Align 17: In Davos, a blueprint for channelling USD 5 billion in private wealth towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals was unveiled. This is part of a YGL initiative to create an investing and philanthropic platform focused on addressing SDG funding gaps. Gastromotiva founded by YGL David Hertz is one project Align17 supports, which raises awareness of food waste and sustainability.

– Circular Economy Awards: Seven awards were given out as part of The Circulars, an annual awards programme put together by Accenture Strategy and the YGL Community to recognize individuals, businesses and organizations that rethink the notion of waste.

– Public Leadership Taskforce: The taskforce convened leaders including the Prime Minister of Peru and the Trade Minister of Canada and announced the launch of a Public Leadership Masterclass in Ottawa that will cover cutting-edge themes for civic entrepreneurs.

Breaking the Bubble

What does responsive and responsible leadership really take? In this simulation, YGLs were challenged to listen to alternate voices and participate in real conversations that were not competitions to be won, but opportunities to enrich, inspire, challenge, illuminate and learn from their peers. YGLs stepped out of their comfort zones and took on contentious issues, to explore what values a responsive and responsible leader adhere to. When sharing reflections on the difficulty of demonstrating authenticity, respect and generosity to those they deeply disagreed with, YGLs said the following:

– “If you’re not confused, you don’t understand” – “Self-reflection and awareness are the beginning of responsiveness” – “One must first focus on finding the smallest point of consensus” – “We must avoid extremist views to prioritize ordinary voices”

The Forum of Young Global Leaders is a community of over 800 enterprising, socially-minded men and women selected under the age of 40, who operate as a force for good to overcome barriers that elsewhere stand in the way of progress. The community is made up of leaders from all walks of life, from every region of the world, and from every stakeholder group in society. This section highlights the activities of YGLs at the Annual Meeting.

Page 11: World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2017 · The journey of the Davos 50 started at the Pre-Davos event hosted by the Zurich Hub in Zurich, Switzerland. Shapers were welcomed by the

– “Finding empathy is important in public leadership – “Rather than debate, we must test hypotheses to

remain open-minded. Debate inherently means a competition to be won”

– “In post-truth politics, we must listen to sentiment and how people feel, even when it is not in touch with reality and not reflective of fact”

– “Showing generosity, respect and authenticity are a way to practice and bring in other voices that we may not recognize or understand”

Interacting with Global Leaders

In informal off-the-record discussions, Young Global Leaders met with United States Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg. Both conversations focused on the personal leadership experiences of the world top figures and YGLs were encouraged to ask questions, including: “How can the growing inequality gap be tackled more effectively?” “How can global actors exercise responsive and responsible leadership to stabilize an international security system threatened by unilateral action and short-term thinking?” “What alternative models to regional integration could mark the beginning of a new Europe?”

Foundations Building Bonds to Achieve More Together

Through regional workshops, 200 Global Shapers, Social Entrepreneurs and Young Global Leaders connected to discuss space for impact collaborations. Using data-analytics tools, community members were grouped according to interest and area of expertise, and were encouraged to share their ongoing activities including Global Shapers Hub Projects, YGL Impact Initiatives and Social Entrepreneurs’ models of innovation. Overall, many potential collaborations were discovered and even some initial commitments made. For example, Social Entrepreneur Marc Koska and YGL Nneka Mobisson-Etuk pledged to share data on their respective projects to better serve chronically-ill patients, and Global Shapers worked with Social Entrepreneur Yasmina Filali to identify new ways of leveraging mobile technology in her work with migrants.

Strengthening Skills for Responsive Leadership

More than ever, we need decision-makers who are capable of restoring people’s faith in a better future and no communities are better positioned to show the way. Global Shapers, Social Entrepreneurs and Young Global Leaders demonstrate responsive and responsible leadership in the actions they take every day. To showcase effective leadership skills and to provide constructive plans for building a better future, community members led four workshops that focused on the skills needed to lead in our current context.

1. Making your voice count: As political narratives, economic and social agendas change across the world, what can you do as a citizen to influence the future you want to see? In a workshop facilitated by YGLs Alberto Alemanno and Ailesh Campbell, the group explored this question and identified tangible actions one can take today to promote change.

2. Telling impactful stories: Facilitated by YGL Dave Duarte, a group explored the art of storytelling to influence and create positive social change. Using real-life examples and practice through simulations and role-plays, the group discovered tangible techniques to craft messages that generate empathy and compel action through inspiring narratives.

3. Resolving emotionally charged negotiations: How do you react when you deeply disagree? YGL Alumnus Dan Shapiro led an interactive discussion, on ‘negotiating the un-negotiable’. Through breakout groups and plenary discussions, the group focused on practical ways to resolve emotionally charged conflicts in both personal and professional life.

4. Using design thinking for social change: Facilitated by YGL Alan Ricks, this workshop focused on how impact-based design methodologies can help curate mission-based projects. Working in groups, participants defined their missions and objectives, and iterated solutions around the key Sustainable Development Goals they were most passionate about.

Interacting with Global Leaders

Global Shapers, Social Entrepreneurs and Young Global Leaders met with ten senior leaders from across business and international organisations for intimate conversations on personal leadership, economic growth, humanitarian response and social entrepreneurship. This included:

– H.R.H. Queen Mathilde of Belgium – Martin Rudolf Brennikmeijer and Daniel Schwartz, Porticus – Philippe le Houerou, Executive Vice-President and CEO, IFC – Peter Maurer, President, ICRC – Khalid Rumaihi, Director, Bahrain Economic Development Board – Peter Agnefjall, CEO, Ikea Group – Manuel Sager, Director General, SDC – Vandana Sikka, Infosys Foundation USA – John Chambers, CEO, Cisco

Influencing Thought-Leadership

Under the theme Responsive and Responsible Leadership, Global Shapers, Social Entrepreneurs and YGLS contributed valuable insights to the World Economic Forum’s blog, the Agenda. From considering how to build more enlightened kinds of capitalism, to developing guides to responsible leadership in the age of populism and contextualizing the things that we can’t do without in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we influenced dialogue in the run up to, and during, the Annual Meeting.
