Novellas

• Anthem by Ayn Rand– Focuses on the collectivist ideals of society as lived by

the author in communist Russia• The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho– Portuguese author who eloquently shares the dreams of

young men while emphasizing the necessity for bildungsroman in the setting of Spain, Morocco and the Sahara Desert.

• The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros – A lovely collection of vignettes strung together in the

heart of a Mexican-American writer who struggles to surpass cultural norms.

Novels

• Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse– This novels allows for an expansive education on

eastern cultures and religion rich in the colors of Nepal and India

• Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe– Africa is a continent of strife and struggle and

Achebe clarifies the archetypal necessity for tribal values amongst a vastly changing modern society

Plays

• Oedipus Rex by Sophocles– A fascinatingly dramatic example of the ancient

Greek tragic hero• A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee

Williams– This play collects family, love, loyalty and societal

taboos in the hotspot of the French Quarter, New Orleans in the early twentieth century
