Growth rate - peak in the early 1960s due to reductions in mortality.
Slowed down due to1. Rising age at marriage
2. Increasing availability and use of effective contraceptive methods.
The annual increase in world population peaked at about 88 million in the late 1980s.
The peak occurred then, even though annual growth rates were past their peak in the
late 1960s, because the world population was higher in the 1980s than in the 1960s.

World Population Day, 2008
Maternal mortality is defined as the death o f a woman while pregnant or within 42 days after termination of pregnancy
from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management. This includes death as a complication of
abortion at any stage of pregnancy.
Theme- Family Planning: Its a Right; Lets Make it Real
The Global need for family planning-
Contraceptives save lives- women are dying every day
Family planning and the environment- stabilizing population would help
sustain the planet
Family planning and poverty reduction-benefits for families and nations
Family planning and young people- their choices create the future
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon - . family planning has immediate
benefits for the lives and health of mothers and their infants..
