Women shine in Japan
The FIVB Women’s World Champi-onship Japan 2010, which finished last month, brought to an end two
years of exhilarating World Champion-ship action. I will look back fondly on both the men’s and women’s tourna-ments, including the opening qualify-ing events in January of 2009 where the likes of Pakistan, Great Britain and Azerbaijan held centre stage as host countries. While our congratulations go to the three women’s medallists Russia, Brazil and Japan, it was obvious that it was not only the top three teams who were successful. All 101 participating na-tions had great success in one form or another.Of course we remember Russia for their amazing exploits in a country famously passionate about our sport but there were numerous teams in contention which acts as a wonderful advertise-ment for the game and how its popu-larity continues to grow around the world. The amount of support in Japan, and not just to local athletes, was out-standing. The Japanese fans are a credit to their country and to Volleyball. There was also a great team making the tournament a success. From Con-trol Committee members to volun-teers, everyone played an instrumental role but one person in particular has to be acknowledged. The JVA’s Mr. Kat-sumi Wakao received the “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays” award from the Japanese Emperor Akihito for his achievements and work for Volley-ball. Japan’s Mr. Volleyball, who is also a long time member of the FIVB Sports Events Council, has selflessly contribut-ed himself to the development of Vol-leyball in his home country as well as spreading the sport around the world and for that the FIVB’s appreciation goes beyond words.
Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President
Russia regain Women’s World championship crown■ led by 35 points from the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, ekaterina Gamova, Russia won their second straight fiVB Women’s World championship title, de-feating Olympic champions Brazil 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 15-11) in a five-set marathon to claim the gold med-al in front of a full house of 12,000 fans at the Yoyogi national Stadium in tokyo, Japan on november 14.
In a repeat of the 2006 final, also won by Russia in five sets, the most successful team in the history of the FIVB Women’s World Championship captured their seventh crown overall, and sixth medal in the past six editions. For world No.1 Brazil, this latest final defeat brings their third World Championship silver medal.
Russia boast an amazing record of medalling in every edition apart from 1967 (when they did not compete) and 1982 and 1986 (when they finished sixth on both occasions). Their overall record is now seven gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
“It wasn’t just about Volleyball today,” Russia coach Vladimir Kuzyutkin said.
“Brazil played very well, and both of us together could demonstrate a great quality of Volleyball. I’m very thrilled that we could win, and I’m very happy for my team. This wasn’t only about sport today, it was about character.

throughout the match. We had three or four young players who didn’t have a lot of experience, more than just being about sport, today it was about our will to win.”
Earlier, Japan upset second-ranked USA in a thrilling five-set match 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 15-8) to win bronze. Continued on page 2

The hosts, ranked fifth in the world, played extraordinary Volleyball to land their first FIVB Women’s World Cham-pionship medal since claiming silver at the 1978 edition in Russia, and im-pressed many considering they were coming off a 3-2 semifinal defeat at the hands of Brazil on November 13.
Tournament MVP Russia’s Ekaterina Gamova equalled the tournament’s best scoring feat in a single match with 35 points in the final against Brazil
World champions hosted by Russian PresidentWorld champions Russia were hosted at an official government reception in Moscow on November 19 where the country’s President, Dmitry Medvedev, personally congratulated the team
for winning the FIVB Women’s World Championship Japan 2010.
The championship was Russia’s sev-enth title and 13th medal overall since

the first edition in 1952 to consolidate their position as the most successful nation in women’s Volleyball.
President Medvedev had earlier con-gratulated the team immediately fol-lowing the victory with a personal message.
“It makes me happy to congratulate you on your triumphant performance at the [FIVB Women’s] World Cham-pionship in Japan,” the message read.
“You won this victory through hard struggle, and displayed true team spir-it, excellent sports skills, and strength of character in the final game against the Olympic champion team from Bra-zil. You defended your champion’s title and once again confirmed the high lev-el of Russia’s Volleyball school. I wish you new achievements and all the very best.”
Prime minister Vladimir Putin also per-sonally congratulated the team.

For world No.2 USA it was the first time they had finished fourth at the FIVB World Championship and the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix champions will no doubt be disappointed they could not add to their two silver and bronze med-als.

USA’s Kerri Walsh won her 39th career SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal, as part of a history-filled medal day in the US$190,000 Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT on November 7. The US team of Walsh and partner Nicole Branagh defeated surprise finalists Marta Menegatti and Valeria Rosso 21-23, 21-14, 15-11 in the gold-medal
match while Carolina and Maria Clara Salgado of Brazil won the bronze-med-al match by defeating the Netherlands’ Sanne Keizer and Marlene Van Iersel 21-17, 21-14.
The title gives Walsh sole possession of the all-time lead in wins, having been tied with long-time partner Misty May-Treanor
on 38 since the end of the 2008 season, the last time Walsh competed internationally.
“It feels like a new world to me because all that I have accom-plished is so far behind me,” Walsh said.
Menegatti and Rosso were the first Italian team to compete in a gold-medal match. Only five times previously had an Italian duo advanced to the semifinals and just once be-fore had Italy won a medal (a bronze in 2001).
Juliana tops Women’s World tour awards listBrazil’s Juliana Felisberta Silva has been named the Most Outstanding Player on the Women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour for the second straight season.
The accolade underlines the 27-year-old’s success in overcoming her disap-pointment at missing the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games due to a knee injury.
The results of the voting for the top competitors on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour by SWATCH representatives, players, coaches, referees and officials on the international Beach Volleyball circuit were announced in Lausanne on November 10.
With the award Juliana became the first women’s player to be named the Tour’s Most Outstanding Player in back-to-back seasons.
Her partner Larissa was named top setter and hitter and has now won the latter prize for the past five sea-sons, including in 2008 when she shared the accolade with Greece’s Vasso Karadassiou. Lar-issa was also the tour’s best defender in 2009.

Women’s World championship returns clean bill of health
fiVB launches new Medical website
Following the results of all Anti-Dop-ing samples taken at the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship, the FIVB was able to confirm on Novem-ber 18 that all of the athletes tested had returned clean results.
A total of 64 samples in competition and 50 outside competition throughout the year were taken, with just one pro-hibited substance found for which the athlete had previously obtained a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). A TUE allows an athlete to take a substance, which is usually banned, for medical reasons. They are only granted one if it is proven that an athlete would experience significant health problems without tak-ing the prohibited substance, that it will not enhance their performance and that there is no alternative remedy.
Samples were taken from at least one randomly selected player at every match in the tournament. Additionally, every athlete at the World Championship had to successfully gain the “We play it clean!” certificate awarded after completing the FIVB’s online Anti-Doping education pro-gramme.

The FIVB launched a new medical sec-tion on its website on November 17, containing information on a number of medical issues, including the FIVB’s Anti-Doping education and awareness programme.
The medical section, accessible from the FIVB’s homepage at www.fivb.org, is di-vided in four sections: Anti-Doping edu-cation, Anti-Doping programme, Athlete Health and Referee Health and provides information on rules and regulations, procedures, official forms and a wide range of educational material, as well as links to resources outside the FIVB.
“The aim of the new medical web page is to have a one-stop platform available for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball Athletes, as well as Team Support Personnel and Referees,” Dr. Roald Bahr, FIVB Medical Commission President, said.

Peru legend calls time on 15-year career
After 15 years, three FIVB World Championships, three FIVB World Cups and two Olympic Games, Peru captain Leyla Chihuan has finally decided to call time on her Volleyball career.
Part of a lost generation who struggled in the shadows of Pe-ru’s glorious 1980s’ generation, Leyla Chihuan took on the challenge of lead-ing her national team during a difficult spell in their history.
“Being captain of the national team, now and always has been a source of both pride and responsibility, because you have to be the first to arrive and the last to leave,” Leyla said in an in-terview recently, and she now believes the time is right to go.
“There are things that I can no longer fight and I must be brave,” she added.
“When I’m not comfortable in a place it is best to step aside, to know that there are circumstances in which you have to take the step to one side.”

President Achilleas Mavromatis said that the Hellenic Volleyball Federation could overcome its financial difficulties at a press conference held in Athens on November 10
of the Hellenic Volleyball Federation (HVBF).
The federation has suffered following the financial turmoil Greece has found itself in over the last year yet Mr. Mav-
romatis, a member of the FIVB and CEV Legal Commissions, believes that it can overcome the problems it currently faces. He reiterated this at a press conference on November 10 to mark 100 days of the new Board of Administration, which was elected on July 29.
“The 100-days mark is more symbolic than anything else,” Mr. Mavromatis said. “But we have managed in this short time to fulfil 50 per cent of our pre-election prom-ises and to put the rest in motion. I will be happy if we achieve 90 per cent of our programme at the end of our first year.”
Despite all the goodwill, the HVBF has huge financial hurdles to overcome. “I have a personal fear that we have not yet realised the financial problem of our country in its fullness,” he added. “We have to adapt to the prevailing condi-tions. Volleyball in Greece cannot contin-ue nonchalantly down its path, ignoring what is happening around us.
“Due to the financial crisis in Greece, there is a tendency towards moving away from state-sponsored sports in the country and personally I am all for it,” continue Mr. Mavromatis. “But we have to change mentalities that date from decades ago.”
