Prior to packaging and terminal sterilization, every lot of enCore® 70/30 Combination Allograft is tested in vitro for a minimum threshold of BMP-2. All lots that pass this initial test then undergo a final post-sterilization in vivo

osteoinduction assay in the athymic rat model* to verify their osteoinductive potential. Any lot that fails either test is not released.

enCore® 70/30 Combination Allograft combines the synergistic characteristics of slowly resorbing, space-maintaining mineralized

cortical bone with osteoinductive demineralized matrix to provide an optimized environment for the regeneration of vital bone.

ADIA Fellow Anna Louise Tolan. ADIA Fellow Esther Rowland.

At the conclusion of the symposium, delegates were thanked for their attendance at this meeting and reminded that we have a selection of upcoming meetings to attend in 2015, from San Francisco, to Berlin, to Cambodia. Please plan to attend one of these meetings as you further your implant education.

As is customary, our auxiliary section, the ADIA, held an independent 2 ½ day main podium program. The ADIA hosted a world class faculty to educate auxiliary program attendees on new concepts, techniques and technologies in implant dentistry. Speakers included, Michelle Kratt, Karen Young, Kelly Brenner, Anna Louise Tolan, Laura Jamison, Dr. Mitra Sadrameli, Dr. Scott Ganz, Dr. Mohamed Sherine El Attar, Dr. Marius Steigmann, Dr. Dwayne Karateew, Dr. R. Scott Westermeier & Maria Miecyjak, Yva Khalil, and Vavi Bohbot. Attendees had their choice of one of four Certification Programs offered on Saturday. The courses, Dental Hygiene Implant Certification Program presented by Yva Khalil, Dental Assisting Implant Certification Program presented by Vavi Bohbot, Practice Management Implant Certification Program presented by Karen Young and Implant Coordinator Training Program presented by Michelle Kratt, give the auxiliaries the cutting edge implant education to help grow practices and continue to be the cornerstone of our educational program.

The highest recognition bestowed by the Association of Dental Implant Auxiliaries for a dental implant auxiliary is fellowship. The ADIA welcomed two fellows in Orlando. Congratulations to Anna Louise Tolan and Esther Rowland on your achievement! We look forward to your contributions at future ADIA Symposia.

The ICOI has several important meetings coming up before the end of the year, so our membership around the world has a wide array of programs and sites from which to choose their next opportunity for obtaining continuing education credits.

ICOI’s Summer Symposium to Be Held in San FranciscoThe setting for our summer implant symposium will be the Downtown Marriott Marquis in San Francisco, California. The dates for this symposium are August 14-16, 2015. The scientific program has been selected by Dr. Dennis Smiler and he has an impressive international faculty for this 2 ½ day (Friday – Sunday) conference. Scheduled speakers include: Drs. Thomas Han, Michael Smilanich, Glenn Gittleson, Jack Krauser, Carolina Lenzi, Ady Palti, Aslan Gokbuget, Soheil Bechara, Abdelsalam Elaskary, Avi Schetritt, Homa Zadeh, Mauro Labanca, Christian Dinu, Paul Jang, Tetsu Takahashi, Jin Kim and Edwin Scher.

August is the perfect time of year to visit one of the U.S.’s most beautiful cities, San Francisco. Plan to take a summer vacation in the City by the Bay. For full details on this conference, visit our web site, www.icoi.org.

ICOI World Congress Returns to Berlin, GermanyWe are proud to announce that ICOI World Congress XXXII will be co-hosted by our German Component Society, the DGOI and a former ICOI Affiliate Society, the BDIZ EDI. The venue for this congress will be the beautiful Maritim Hotel Berlin in Germany’s capital city. The dates for this World Congress are October 15-17, 2015.

Berlin has become the “in” city of Europe. Some say it rivals New York. With its museums, symphony and opera companies the cultural and educational opportunities are endless. The Maritim Berlin is located a short distance from the Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz, the Reichstag Building, the Victory Column, the Berlin Philharmonic, several museums, high-end as well as unique shopping, and much more.

The Congress will commence on Thursday, October 15th with a half-day program devoted to the Young Implantologists. This program has been very successful with the DGOI as it provides the future for the DGOI main podium speakers. Dr. Konstantinos Valavanis has put together a program that runs from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Thursday afternoon will be devoted to 8 sponsored workshops. We are still accepting requests for poster presentations. Interested parties should visit our web site, www.icoi.org for more information.

The Main Podium has a wide range of international speakers. The invited speakers include, Drs. Thomas Albrektsson, Ata Anil, Joseph Choukroun,

Gurel Galip, Fouad Khoury, Eric Rompen, Mariusz Duda, Yvan Poitras, Gerard Scortecci, Ralf Smeets, Kostantinos Valavanis, Ady Palti, Pascal Marquardt, Richard Leesungbok, Jaafar Mouhyi and Ilia Roussou.

Autumn in Berlin, not a bad place to be. If you can’t visit us in San Francisco in August, plan to make it to Germany in the fall.

18th ICOI Asia Pacific Section Congress Will Be in Cambodia, November 13-15, 2015Our AP section will be celebrating its 18th congress in Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia. Cambodia is the home of the famous Angkor temples built between the 9th and 14th centuries. The social highlight of this congress will be the gala dinner with entertainment for which the AP section meetings are well known. Delegates to this congress can take advantage of a spectacular hotel room rate. Guests can stay at the Angkor Wat Miracle Resort and Spa. Go to the AP Section web site, www.icoi-ap.org for the special room rate for participants and information on the scientific program.

AroundThe WorldPOLAND: Auxiliary Education

PSI President Dr. Mariusz Duda (seated far left) with participants of the program.

In response to the reported demand for professional training for implant hygienists, the Polish Society of Implantology (PSI) began the first edition of Curriculum for Implant Hygienists and Assistants. The curriculum is dedicated to training hygienists, dental assistants and other members of the implant team, whose main goal is professional co-working with implantologists to prepare the patient for treatment in the field of periodontics, oral surgery, implantology and postoperative care. The program is delivered through theoretical lectures and practical workshops.

GUATEMALAGuatemala Education OpportunitiesLast year the AP Section held a sinus lift course at Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala City. Dr. Judy met with the Dean, Dr. Ramiro Alfaro and some of his associates in New York in November. As a result on August 6-8, 2015 another course will be held in cooperation with New York University College of Dentistry. The effort will be spearheaded by Dr. Sang-Choon Cho and NYU graduates again emphasizing advanced surgical procedures.

After a short break (one day) the next training session of a Columbia School of Dental Medicine based AP course will be held again at Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala City. Doctors will receive their well earned advanced credentials in Cambodia later in the year.

To summarize, the AP Section has proven to be an expanding, dynamic and well led section of the ICOI. Congratulations are due to all involved.

(Standing, from left to right) Drs. Luis Grisolía and Jose Rodrigo Cayarga. (Sitting, from left to right) Dean Ramiro Alfaro, Dr. Kenneth Judy, Kate Matsumoto and Betty Lukacs.

IAOI Eliat Symposium SupportICOI Co-chairman Dr. Kenneth Judy met recently in Baden Baden, Germany with officers of the Israeli Association of Oral Implantology, the IAOI, to discuss the upcoming meeting in Eilat, November 18-21, 2015 this fall. Maximum publicity to our worldwide membership as well as educational support was promised to IAOI President Semion Bergman and to IAOI Treasurer Akiva Elad. Dr. Judy also met with IAOI past President Dr. Zev Ormianer in New York a few days ago. He was trying to understand the full picture of dentistry today in Israel in terms of; How many dental schools were there? Two actually. How many graduates per year? 80-90 in fact. How many licenses were granted per year to dentists coming to Israel? 200 was an agreed upon estimate. What was the ethnic background and gender of graduates? etc… In order to have a full understanding of what was happening in Israel today. Mr. Arnon Zabari, a commercial consultant added confirmation and additional information. Look for a report this fall in ICOI’s International Newsletter to see how much assistance was provided.

(Standing, from left to right) IAOI President, Dr. Semion Bergman, IAOI Treasurer and Dr. Akiva Elad. (Sitting, from left to right) ICOI Co-chairman, Dr. Kenneth Judy and Consultant Arnon Zabari.

Asia Pacific Section ActivitiesDr. Judy was also able to meet extensively with ICOI Executive Director Ms. Kate Matsumoto in Baden Baden, as well as earlier in Tokyo, Orlando and for a number of days in New York to share information about the dynamic activities of the AP section and its Board of Directors:

To be sure, Tokyo was a very successful World Congress. However, the future is even more impressive. A Japanese annual meeting will be held in Fukuoka. An AP Section meeting is planned next in Cambodia at one of the most famous World Heritage sites Angkor Wat. An excellent marriage of tourism and implant education. The program chairs will be Dr. Poch Sophearoth, President, Dental Implant Society of Cambodia and Dr. Shohei Kasugai, President, ICOI Asia Pacific Section. All specific information can be found on ICOI and ICOI’s Asia Pacific Website. www.icoi.org and www.icoi-ap.org.

Further, an AP Section symposium is being planned in Australia in 2016. Again a wonderful opportunity for tourism and education.

ICOI WORLD NEWS • April 2015 11

Extensive clinic celebration for colleagues from Germany and around the world was held at Dr. Palti’s new clinic.

(from left to right) Drs. Ady Palti, Kenneth Judy and Mark Reinisch with the Mayor Margret Mergen.

A New Clinic for Dr. Ady PaltiDr. Ady Palti invited multiple foreign guests to the opening of his new facility in Baden Baden, Germany. There for many years he and his colleagues have taught advanced surgical and prosthetic techniques to groups of “foreign” colleagues. Dr. Palti, of course, is an ICOI past president and worldwide lecturer on a variety of implant related subjects.

Remarks were made by the High Mayor, Margret Mergen of Baden Baden, the nephew of artist Werner Reinisch, Dr. Mark Reinisch whose art work was on display in Dr. Palti’s new office, by Dr. Kenneth Judy, ICOI Co-chairman, as well as by Dr. Palti himself. What emerged was a portrait of a dedicated teacher, an innovator in the field of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry and someone who was always giving of himself to advance the field.

Coincidently, a number of planning meetings were held to “put the finishing touches” on an ICOI World Congress to be held in Berlin this fall, jointly supported by the ICOI, the DGOI and the BDIZ EDI. I trust that we will see many of you there.
