The Home Instead Senior Care® network, the world’s largest provider of in-home senior caregiving services, has assembled the top Alzheimer’s experts in North America to develop a unique, person-centered care program for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

The unique approach focuses on the care and dignity of individuals rather than the symptoms, diagnosis, treatments and possible cures for the disease.

As the number of Alzheimer’s cases more than double by mid-century, increasing numbers of families will opt to care for their seniors at home because it is a quality, affordable solution. Presently, it is estimated that 70 percent of older adults with Alzheimer’s disease live at home.

Research shows that families have two significant challenges when caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias – keeping their loved one’s mind engaged and managing difficult behaviors.

Caregiver Challenges

The CARE Approach

According to a study conducted by the Boomer Project, of those families who frequently experience dementia-related behaviors with their loved ones, the following are the most difficult to control:

• Delusions/hallucinations

• Wandering

• Refusal

• Aggression

• Repetition

• Agitation

• Sexual inappropriateness

• False accusations

People with Alzheimer’s disease typically have no short-term memory – they can only live in the past. When they are forced to live in the present, they can become uncooperative and difficult.

The CARE approach offers proven techniques to help manage difficult behaviors, encourage engagement and give seniors with Alzheimer’s disease an opportunity to live fulfilling lives.

At the core of the Alzheimer’s CARE Program is the exclusive Capturing Life’s Journey® Life JournalSM – a special tool to help caregivers capture the senior’s life story and learn who they are as individuals. The stories and life experiences gathered in the Life Journal are used to provide person-centered care.

Research shows that talking with people with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias about their lives can create positive emotional experiences. Bringing back pieces of

their past, can often engage, redirect or calm them. For example:

If you ask a senior with Alzheimer’s about growing up on a wheat farm, he may recall doing chores every morning and share that information with you.

If you tell a senior with Alzheimer’s that you heard she makes a great pumpkin pie, she might start talking about recipes.

Through specialized classroom-style training, Home Instead professional CAREGivers learn how to effectively collect and use these types of life stories. The training is highly interactive, dynamic and designed to accommodate all adults’ learning styles. The program consists of seven classes:

• Alzheimer’s Disease or Other Dementias Overview,

• Capturing Life’s Journey,• Techniques to Manage Behaviors,• Encouraging Client Engagement,• To Us, It’s Personal®, • Assisting with Activities of Daily Living, and • Keeping Your Client Safe.

Because there currently is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, many families are in desperate need of solutions.

That’s why the Home Instead Senior Care network is making the Alzheimer’s CARE training available to all families – even those who do not use the network’s services.

The free family training, which is available online and through local Home Instead Senior Care offices across the country, consists of four classes:

• Alzheimer’s Disease or Other Dementias Overview,

• Capturing Life’s Journey,• Techniques to Manage Behaviors, and• Activities to Encourage Engagement.

Also available is a free guide for those who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Called Helping Families Cope, the guide includes advice to help families keep their loved ones engaged and manage behaviors.

To obtain a copy of the Helping Families Cope guide or for more information about the CARE training, contact the local Home Instead Senior Care office or log onto HelpForAlzheimersFamilies.com.
