PASTOR’S LETTER Come, Creator Spirit…
This is a very spiritually full weekend for our Archdiocese. Five men were ordained to the priesthood, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles at Pentecost, and we rejoice in the first public Sunday Masses of over ten people in months.
Praise God! With thanks to God, and asking him for help with the many challenges we s!ll face, it seems like a good !me to pray the ancient hymn known as Veni Creator Spiritus, “Come, Creator Spirit.” It’s sung at ordina!on Masses but can also be prayed any!me by any of us. Perpetual Adora!on at the Church of St. Raphael has been temporarily suspended due to the Coronavirus health concern, and the Adora!on Chapel is temporarily closed.
At this !me, the main church is open for private prayer from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm except during the daily Masses, the Saturday evening and Sunday weekend Masses, and any funeral Masses. Please enter through the Lower Level East door near Marian Hall. Please observe the social distancing guidelines - keeping at least 6 feet between yourself and others.

SAINT OF THE DAY - BLESSED GIACOMO SALOMONI Giacomo (James in English) was born in Venice (now part of Italy, then an independent Republic) in 1232 to a family of nobles. A(er his father died, he was brought up by his mother, then by his grandmother a(er his mother had become a Cistercian nun. When he was seventeen, Giacomo joined the Dominican Order. Many years later, he was made prior in turn at Forli, Faenza, San Severino and Ravenna. Finally, he se&led at Forli, where he spent his !me reading, praying and helping the poor. He read not only the Bible, but also the Roman Martyrology—the Church’s official book of saints—which gave him constant food for media!on. Giacomo experienced ecstasy in prayer, healed paraly!cs and had the gi( of prophecy. He suffered from a serious disease—probably cancer—for four years, from which he was cured not long before his death. He lived to be eighty-two. A year a(er his death, a brotherhood was formed to promote his venera!on. Blessed Giacomo Salomoni, pray for us! ST. RAPHAEL MASS UPDATES

Praise God that we can now have up to 250 people at Mass and other parish gatherings!
We are doing our best to provide an environment that minimizes the risk of the spread of COVID-19. Before and a(er every Mass, surfaces that people touch like pews, doorknobs and push plates, handrails, bathroom faucets, sinks and counters will be disinfected. Two out of every three pews are taped off. Doors to the nave (worship area) of the church will be designated “entrance” or “exit.” The family rooms (cry rooms) are closed. There will not be congrega!onal singing because the act of singing could result in someone who is infected with COVID-19 propelling the virus further ahead than if he or she were just speaking the Mass responses. Only priests will distribute Holy Communion, and they will wear masks while doing so. If he accidentally touches the hand or tongue of the communicant, the priest will purify his fingers in water and then hand sani!zer at a table in the sanctuary before giving Holy Communion to the next person.
For your part, the Archdiocese states that you should stay home if you are over 65 years old or have a preexis!ng health condi!on, that you should wear a mask while in the church building—except, obviously, while in the process of receiving Holy Communion—and should receive the Body of Christ in the hand. Please keep in mind that the word “should” is a pruden"al judgment of what is considered most appropriate, that is, the safest thing to do, considering the risk of ge#ng seriously sick from COVID-19 or infec"ng other people with it. But these “shoulds” are not absolute requirements. They are strong recommenda"ons, and should be taken very seriously, but don’t mean “must” or “have to.” The Archdiocese also strongly urges that face masks be worn by everyone in church (but not by those under the age of two, because, according to the CDC, it may put them at risk of suffoca!on). Please sit at least six feet apart from anyone who doesn’t live in your household.
For everyone who does come for Mass on Saturday a&ernoon or Sunday, please enter the nave (worship area) of the church from the east gathering space, so we can keep track of how many are coming in and limit the number to no more than 250. To help with this, the outside doors to the church, on the west and north sides, will be locked. You will be able to exit through any door. When entering the building, please use the doors by Marian Hall, on the east side, downstairs, or the office entrance, on the west side, upstairs.
Distribu!on of Holy Communion will be done a(er Mass. Immediately a(er the final blessing and the usual other prayers, the priest celebrant will go into the sacristy, take off his chasuble, wash his hands, put on a mask, then return to the sanctuary, along with the other priest. At that point, those who wish to receive Holy Communion should come forward, forming a single line, and keeping six feet away from those in front of you, unless you are in the same household. Green “X”s have been put on the floor to help you with this. If you are in a wheelchair, one of the priests will bring the Body of Christ to you. Otherwise, proceed to the Communion rail and line up along it, as usual, again keeping at least six feet from the person to your side unless you belong to the same household. When the Communion rail is fully occupied, wait in the center aisle standing on the green “X”s un!l everyone has le( the sec!on of the Communion rail in front of you. Please do not line up in front of the first pew. A(er you have received Holy Communion, you may leave the building or return to your pew for prayer and medita!on. Please do not visit with each other in the building—save that for the parking lot, and con!nue to observe social distancing.
For those who bring their !thes and offerings to Mass, there may be baskets for that purpose set in the openings of the Communion rail, or the ushers may take up a collec!on using long-handled baskets, depending on how many ushers are available.
To try to make sure as many people as possible have access to Mass, in addi!on to the regular 5:30 pm Mass on Saturday evening and the 8:30 am and 10:30 am Masses Sunday morning, we will be adding an extra Mass on Sunday—at 12:30 pm. There will no longer be Mass at 6:30 am on Wednesdays at this !me.
Please remember that the obliga!on to a#end Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obliga!on remains suspended, so please don’t feel guilty if you choose to stay away from Mass because of concerns about COVID-19. If you or someone in your family would prefer to receive Holy Communion away from Mass, please let Fr. Al!er or me know.

EXTREME FAITH CAMP CANCELLED
Hello, Thank you so much for your interest in Extreme Faith Camp this summer. COVID-19 con!nues to impact the ways in which we are able to gather, and thus how our parishes are able to carry out our regular ministry. With the governor’s most recent update regarding social distancing, and the Archbishop’s recommenda!ons on how to structure the return to public Masses, our parishes, along with the council of our pastors, have decided to cancel Extreme Faith Camp. We will be issuing refunds on what you've paid for camp. Despite the fact that we are unable to meet in person, our parishes are commi&ed to finding ways to minister to your families during this !me. In par!cular, we are working on a collabora!ve, family-focused weekday series targeted at our Middle School and High School students. This event will take place in early August, when we hope we will be able to have public gatherings while maintaining social distancing and safety protocols. We will be following the guidance of Archbishops and local government and safety will be a top priority as we plan this event.
