PASTOR’S LETTER The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter 46: The Second Luminous Mystery—the Self-Manifesta!on of Jesus at the Wedding of Cana, con!nued…

When the Blessed Virgin Mary found out that the hosts of the marriage banquet had run out of wine, she first

told Jesus, then said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:5).

Since so few of Mary’s words are recorded in the Gospels, every phrase of hers we do find there, is very important and full of meaning. This sentence is no excep!on.

For one thing, I think it’s fair to say that “Do whatever he tells you” sums up Mary’s mission in life. The Blessed Virgin in the daughter of God the Father, the mother of God the Son and the spouse of God the Holy Spirit. She wants nothing more than for you and I and everyone else to follow God’s commandments, instruc!ons, words, direc!ons and inspira!ons. That’s what will bring us happiness!

As we meditate on this Mystery of the Rosary, it’s a wonderful opportunity to ask ourselves how well we obey God.

Of course, to answer this ques!on, we need to know what he wants us to do. That means reading the Bible and authorita!ve books about the official teachings of the Church, like the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Jesus said to his disciples: “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” (Luke 10:16) One reason Christ established the office of bishop in the Church is to faithfully pass on in its pure form the original deposit of the faith—that is, what Christ and his apostles did and said and meant. This is passed on to each succeeding genera!on through Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradi!on, which includes the Mass and other prayers and sacraments of the Church, the wri!ngs of the Church Fathers, the lives of the saints and other carriers of the truth, beauty and goodness that come from God. No individual is an island in his or her rela!onship with Jesus Christ. Instead, we receive the Faith as members of a Community of Faith, which is the Living Body of Christ.

Once we know what God asks of all of us, we are in a be%er posi!on to try to discover what he wants for ourselves as individuals, long-term and day by day. For example, Jesus told his followers to love one another as he had loved them, even to laying down his life for them. That can influence us as discern our voca!on, choose a career, cul!vate friendships and decide what to do with our spare !me. To determine how to translate the general commands of the Lord to specifics, we need to pray, think and get advice.

The word “whatever” in the phrase “Do whatever he tells you” also reminds us of the importance of humility. It would be a big mistake to try to limit how far we will go in our rela!onship with God. He knows more than us. And because he is Love, we can be sure that anything he asks of us will be good.

“Do whatever he tells you” is not only a good phrase to tell ourselves, but also a good phrase for us to tell others. Maybe not in those exact words, not all the !me. But they should express our basic hope for others and should be a message we pass on to those whom the Lord puts in our path, just like Mary did with the folks she encountered at that wedding party. Jesus Christ has the words of eternal life. Why not share them with others, so that they can have eternal life, too?

Your fellow pilgrim though the Rosary, Father Rudolph

The Church of Christ on Mission in the World

Pope Francis has called this year’s World Mission Sunday month, an Extraordinary Missionary Month, in honor of the 100th anniversary of Maximum Illud, Pope Benedict XV’s le%er focusing on our missionary call. World Mission Sunday is the celebra!on of this special month. This celebra!on and appeal of the Society for the Propaga!on of the Faith supports our brothers and sisters in over 1,100 mission dioceses worldwide needing help. To honor this day, two individuals are highlighted among many who have chosen to go beyond borders, leave home and family, and share the Gospel message of love and hope. Please remember that we are all called to be missionary by our bap!sm and support those who are serving as missionaries by offering prayers and financial gi=s during World Mission Sunday in the parish collec!on.

Saturday, October 26th, is the day of the 14th annual St. Raphael Catholic School Rake-a-thon! For those of you who might not be familiar with this tradi!on, this is the day that St. Raphael School students, parents, and teachers rake the yards of people in our community who need assistance, and who have signed up for our help; there is no charge to the home owner. At the same !me, the people at Mass have a chance to support the students’ raking efforts through monetary dona!ons of any amount to our school. The goal of this year’s Rake-a-thon is $12,000. All financial gi=s go to the school’s general opera!ng fund. If you would like to make a pledge to support the students’ raking efforts, there are envelopes at the ends of each pew. You will also no!ce blank paper leaves in the pews. These are for a tradi!onal prayer tree which will be placed outside of Marian Hall for all to see during the month of October. Whether you make a dona!on or not, we invite you to write out a special prayer inten!on on those leaves. The leaves will be placed on the tree, and the inten!ons will be included in the students’ prayers. God bless our school and Rake-a-thon 2019!

SAINT OF THE DAY - BLESSED HONORATUS OF BIALA PODLASKA Florence Wenceslaus John Kozminski was born on October 16, 1829 at Biala Podlaska, Poland. His parents were middle-class, devout Catholics. In 1844, he a%ended the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw to study architecture like his father had done. Then his father suddenly died and, affected by some an!-religious teachings, he gave up prac!cing the Catholic faith. He even worked against the Church, trying to convert his friends to his an!-Catholic views. In 1846, he was falsely accused of having taken part in a conspiracy against the Russians, who ruled Poland at that !me. He was imprisoned under terrible condi!ons. A=er his release, on the feast of the Assump!on, he recovered his religious faith. He publicly confessed his past apostasy and a%ributed his conversion to the grace obtained for him by Our Lady and the prayers of his mother. Then, in December of 1848, he joined the Capuchin Friars Minor in Warsaw and took the name Honoratus. Four years later he was ordained a priest. In addi!on to the usual priestly ministry, he taught religion in local schools and served as a prison chaplain. In 1863, following a failed uprising by some Poles against the Russians, Honoratus was forbidden to leave the monastery by the Russians. In spite of this persecu!on, he kept up his priestly ministry in the confessional and by organizing groups of the Third Order of Saint Francis, in which lay people could con!nue their everyday occupa!ons while taking simple vows and living in community. Between 1874 and 1895, twenty-six of these groups were set up. They had a common apostolate as Franciscans, but also specific roles—some purely religious, such as preaching, some social, such as working for higher wages for rural workers. Honoratus also wrote a number of spiritual books and lives of saints. He died a=er a painful illness on December 16, 1916. Blessed Honoratus of Biala Podlaska, pray for us!
