Some time later, Jesuswentup to Jerusalem foroneof the Jewish festivals.Nowthere is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is calledBethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a greatnumber of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. Onewhowastherehadbeenaninvalidforthirty-eightyears.WhenJesussawhimlyingthereandlearnedthathehadbeeninthisconditionforalongtime,heaskedhim,“Doyouwanttogetwell?”“Sir,”theinvalidreplied,“Ihavenoonetohelpmeintothepoolwhenthewaterisstirred.WhileIamtryingtogetin,someoneelsegoesdownaheadofme.” ThenJesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up yourmat andwalk.” At once themanwascured;hepickeduphismatandwalked. ThedayonwhichthistookplacewasaSabbath,andsotheJewishleaderssaidtothemanwhohadbeenhealed,“ItistheSabbath; the law forbids you to carry yourmat.” But he replied, “Themanwho



mademewellsaidtome,‘Pickupyourmatandwalk.’”Sotheyaskedhim,“Whoisthisfellowwhotoldyoutopickitupandwalk?”Themanwhowashealedhadnoideawhoitwas,forJesushadslippedawayintothecrowdthatwasthere. LaterJesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stopsinningorsomethingworsemayhappentoyou.”ThemanwentawayandtoldtheJewishleadersthatitwasJesuswhohadmadehimwell.So,becauseJesuswasdoingthesethingsontheSabbath,theJewishleadersbegantopersecutehim.17InhisdefenseJesussaidtothem,“MyFather isalwaysathiswork to this very day, and I too amworking.” For this reason they tried all themore tokill him;notonlywashebreaking theSabbath, buthewas even callingGodhisownFather,makinghimselfequalwithGod.You’rewelcometoprayforthefollowingtoday:

John7:1–2,10,25–30AfterthisJesuswentaboutinGalilee.HedidnotwishtogoaboutinJudeabecausethe Jewswere looking for an opportunity to kill him.Now the Jewish festival ofBoothswasnear.Butafterhisbrothershadgonetothefestival,thenhealsowent,notpubliclybut as itwere in secret.Nowsomeof thepeopleof Jerusalemweresaying,“Isnotthisthemanwhomtheyaretryingtokill?Andhereheis,speakingopenly,buttheysaynothingtohim!Canitbethattheauthoritiesreallyknowthatthis is theMessiah?Yetweknowwhere thisman is from;butwhentheMessiahcomes, no one will know where he is from.” Then Jesus cried out as he wasteachinginthetemple,“Youknowme,andyouknowwhereIamfrom.Ihavenotcomeonmyown.But theonewho sentme is true, andyoudonot knowhim. Iknowhim,becauseIamfromhim,andhesentme.”Thentheytriedtoarresthim,butnoonelaidhandsonhim,becausehishourhadnotyetcome.
