There will be no collection during the month of December. Thank you for your generosity!

NEW TO THE PARISH? The next Parishioner Registration Session is today, Sunday, November 17, immediately after the 10:00 a.m. Mass in the Undercroft. Come register and find out more about our Parish family. To register for the session, please visit http://www.stmatthew.net/new-parishioner-registration-session.

ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO

WE LOVE TO SEE OUR LITTLE ONES IN MASS, but we acknowledge that some days it's HARD. Parents, we still want you and your kids with us, even if their behavior isn't picture perfect. Fr. Sill asked us to share the ideas below with the community and to assure parents that he and Fr. Peter are not bothered by the noises kids naturally make. Yes, sometimes parents need to step out for a minute with their kids, but come back in. We all want kids with us here. And, other parishioners, one way we can support each other in our vocations is to smile and encourage, despite the squirms and the cries. Who (besides God) truly knows what challenges all of us are facing? We aren't with each other all the time, but we are with each other during the hour of Mass. Let's offer each other grace and support during that hour.

To the parents of our young children...

• Relax! God put the wiggle in children -- sometimes it comes out! That's ok. All are welcome here.

• We recommend you sit toward the front where it's easier for the children to see and hear.

• Quietly explain the parts of the Mass to your children as you go. Older kids might like following along with a worship aid like Magnifikids.

• We encourage you to sing the hymns and pray and voice the responses. Children learn how to behave in Mass by watching adults. And, let's be honest -- it's easier to pay attention when you're doing something.

• If you have to leave Mass with your child, please do, but also, please come back. As Jesus said, "Let the children come to me."

• If you feel more comfortable using our nursery, please do! We have volunteers who have been trained in our Safe Environment Policies and who have undergone background checks staffing the nursery during 10:00 a.m. Mass and Noon Mass.

To our parishioners...

• Remember that the way we welcome children directly affects how they respond to church, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they belong here!

• A smile of encouragement is always welcome to parents with small active children. The presence of children is a gift to the Church!

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE ON DECEMBER 14 – Make a difference in someone’s life. The need is constant and the gratification is instant. Every unit of blood has the potential to save three lives in Central Ohio. Remember, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” Please consider donating! Anyone who is 17 years or older, weighs at least 110 pounds, and is in general good health, can be a blood donor. Eligible blood donors must have made their last donation on or before, October 18, 2019. Our next blood drive is on Saturday, December 14 in the Hutta Gym from 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Schedule an appointment today by calling 1-800-REDCROSS, visit www.redcrossblood.org (sponsor code: MatthewApChurch), sign up at the table in the Gathering Space or you can call Teresa Baird at 614-404-3130 or email [email protected]. Your donation is always appreciated!

POINSETTIAS, DECORATIONS AND MUSIC – It has been a tradition in our Parish to remember a loved one by making a contribution to our Christmas flowers, decorations, and music (suggested donation is $10.00). For your convenience, an envelope has been provided in our monthly and quarterly packet of offertory envelopes. Envelopes are also available at the Ushers’ Station in the Gathering Space. On the envelope, please print the name of the person(s) you wish to remember, and drop the envelope in the collection basket by Sunday, December 8. Thank you.

DO YOU LOVE INTERACTING WITH CHILDREN? DO YOU ENJOY SPENDING TIME WITH THEM? If you answered yes, then a part-time position with St. Matthew Latchkey is the perfect place for you! We are looking for individuals who want to help provide a safe and enjoyable environment for St. Matthew School students after school. Come work 3-4 hours a day, a few days a week in this rewarding and valuable program. For more details, please contact Robin Kuhns, St. Matthew Latchkey Director, at [email protected] or call St. Matthew School at 614-471-4930.

JOIN FR. PETER FOR A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY! On June 12-23, 2020, Fr. Peter will host a group of pilgrims on an experience of holiness and healing to Fatima and Lourdes, continuing on to the Passion Play in Oberammergau. This play has been presented every 10 years since 1634 by the village of Oberammergau as a way of thanking God for sparing the village from the plague. Every stop on this tour is life-changing and breath-taking. For details, contact Katy at Jerusalem Tours at 614-501-6714 or email [email protected]. Spaces are filling quickly, so call today!

ONLINE GIVING NOW AVAILABLE - We are excited to announce that we are now able to accept weekly offertory and special envelope donations, in addition to Charitable Works donations, through our new online giving system! We are grateful for the ongoing support of our mission and ministry from St. Matthew Parishioners, and we are pleased to be able to offer this user-friendly system, which allows individuals to control all aspects of how and when they give. For detailed information about how to take advantage of online giving, please see our website: www.stmatthew.net/giving.

VISITING MINISTRY – Saint Matthew Parish has numerous care facilities for the elderly within its boundaries. In these care centers as well as in private homes, there are numerous parishioners who could enjoy a visitor every once in a while. When I go to visit or to take Communion, these elderly are so appreciative. Please consider becoming a part of our Visiting Ministry and sharing a half hour of your time each week or every other week with someone who is lonely. If you are interested, please contact Carol Ann Lombardi at 614-478-4328 or [email protected].

ATTENTION, MEN! Do you want to develop a closer relationship with God? Do you like to snow ski or snowboard? If so, please consider joining Wilderness Outreach on its 3rd annual Wilderness Outreach ski trip to Summit County, Colorado on February 2-8, 2020. Fr. Matthew Hoover of Immaculate Conception will be our chaplain. This outing will include Liturgy of the Hours, daily Mass, and as much skiing/snowboarding as your legs can handle. We will also read a book on masculine spirituality or related topic prior to arrival and discuss that book each night after dinner. A rough estimate of costs is around $1,500.00 for the condo, airfare, lift tickets, rental car, and food. If you are interested or need more information, please contact Christopher Walsh at [email protected] or 614-580-7059. Space is extremely limited, so reserve your spot today!

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 17, 2019

PARISH PROJECTS

As good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, ongoing initiatives, and enhancements.Last week your Facilities Team supported their busiest week yet. Major events included the Hometown Bazaar, Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast, a basketball tournament, the school’s Veterans Day Program, four Jr. Drama Club “Annie” performances, a campus security assessment, parent/teacher conferences and a daily list of organizations utilizing the church meeting rooms and our first taste of real winter. It is easy to forget the planning and logistics required to smoothly support and transition between events. It was our pleasure to help.We didn’t think our snow and ice removal equipment would be tested this early in the season. We discovered how far and how quickly a ton of salt would go. We learned much from the experience and will be making adjustments over the next few weeks to better serve you during snow and ice events. This week we are hosting the school’s Thanksgiving Luncheon in which over 1,500 students and parents will be served. With Advent only a couple weeks away, final planning and preparations are being made for our Christmas season programs and decorations. We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. Please contact George Harvey at [email protected].

DIVINE MERCY ADORATION CHAPEL "When you look at the Crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you then. When you look at the Sacred Host, you understand how much Jesus loves you now."

– St. Mother Teresa of CalcuttaIf you’d like to make a weekly commitment, or get more information, please contact Jeff Bernard at [email protected] or 216-372-4991. CAN YOU NOT WATCH ONE HOUR WITH ME?Over 100 Benefits of Eucharistic Adoration: #3: A Holy Hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament is so important to Jesus that a multitude of souls go to Heaven who otherwise would have gone to hell. (Jesus' revelation to Blessed Dina Belanger)Visitors are welcome Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. and on Saturday & Sunday from 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Please visit StMatthew.net/DMC for more info.

IN-HOME EMHC NEEDED – We are in need of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to minister to the homebound on Sundays. Recently, two assisted living facilities have opened in our parish area, which has put a strain on our existing In-Home EMHC, requiring the need for additional EMHC. If interested or want to learn more, contact Max Maksimoski at [email protected].

CALL TO COME HOME – If you’ve been away from the Church, are drifting away, feel confused, hurt or angry, have questions or concerns, this is an invitation to talk with us. Please contact Pat Martin at [email protected].

PARISH NURSERY – We are happy to offer a nursery for young children during the 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon Masses on Sundays, but we are unable to offer nursery care during the other weekend Masses due to lack of available volunteers. The safety of our children is our top priority, so we thank you for understanding. If you have any questions about the nursery, please contact Maria Ohalek at [email protected].

BOY SCOUTS “GOOD TURN” FOR AMERICA – SCOUTING FOR FOOD FOR CWM’S FOOD PANTRY – The Boy Scouts of America are collecting canned goods and nonperishable food items to replenish the Nation's food pantries as winter sets in. All across the Nation, Boy Scout units have mobilized and will be "Scouting for Food." Food donated to Boy Scout Troop 317, sponsored by St. Matthew Parish, will be given to our Charitable Works Ministry for local distribution. Please bring your food items in this weekend, November 16-17 and November 23-24. You may leave them at the south entrance of the church (portico entrance). The point of contact is Assistant Scoutmaster, Tom Liszkay at 614-476-2044.

GRIEFSHARE - SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS – The holidays can be a tough time for those who have recently lost a loved one. Please join us this Thursday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Saint Raphael Room for a special session of “GriefShare - Surviving the Holidays.” You do not have to be enrolled in the current GriefShare session to attend. All are welcome. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Lager at [email protected].

WALKING WITH PURPOSE CONNECT COFFEE – In this world of noise and busyness, it is hard for women to find the time to give ourselves a little attention. Please join us for a talk and discussion to remind us of how precious we are to God and that His love is unconditional. He is captivated by each one of us – not because of what we do or what others think of us, but simply because we are His precious daughters. No experience necessary, just come as you are for some coffee and a chance to see what Walking with Purpose is all about! We will meet this Thursday, November 21 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the St. Anthony Room. “Above all, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” (Proverbs 4:23). Walking with Purpose is held on Wednesday mornings at 9:15 a.m. or Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the St. Anthony Room from September through March. Its mission is to help every Catholic woman and girl in America to open her heart to Jesus Christ. For more information, contact Sheila Cafmeyer at [email protected].

GOLDEN MUSTANGS 55+ RETREAT – Come join us this Wednesday, November 20 (please note change in date) at St. Therese’s Retreat Center from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Our retreat director is Fr. Thomas Blau, O.P., who currently resides at St. Patrick’s Church. The cost is $22.00 per person and Mass, prayer time, lunch, spiritual direction and talks are included. Registration is required. Please contact JoEllen Vickers at [email protected] or Paul and Joan Rovnak at [email protected]. All senior citizens are invited and encouraged to attend!

THE SAINT MATTHEW BOOK CLUB will meet this Wednesday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Saint Gabriel Room. (Please note the date change to the third Thursday of the month due to Thanksgiving.) We will be discussing the book Beatitudes - Eight Steps to Happiness by Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM, CAP. All are welcome!

ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO

JOIN US THIS JANUARY FORBISHOP ROBERT BARRON’S

THE MASS

Walk through the Liturgy with Bishop Barron and you’ll be transformed through insights on this most privileged and intimate encounter with our Lord, Jesus Christ. See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heavenly realm, how it resonates with a call from God and a response from His people, the Church, and, most importantly, how we are intimately joined with the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus through the Holy Eucharist.

ARE YOU READY TO MAKE THIS ADVENT A REAL PREPARATION FOR CHRISTMAS?

Have you ever felt that when Christmas comes around that you’re just not ready? Of all the liturgical seasons of the year, Advent is certainly the most stressful, and it may be the most confusing. Catholics seem to have a good grasp of Christmas, Lent, and Easter. But what is the deeper meaning of Advent? And how can understanding this season help us better prepare for Christmas? Beginning this Advent season, the Sunday Mass Reading Explained sessions will be expanded to help you gain a firm foundation on the meaning of Advent.Join us along with video presenter, Dr. Brant Pitre, a Professor of Scripture at The Augustine Institute as he provides the commentary on all of the Mass readings for each weekend in Advent.

Advent begins Sunday, December 1.We have 2 sessions each week for your convenience.

Cost: FREEAll materials are provided. No background experience needed to join the session. Come any time, registration is not necessary. Bring your teens!

USHERS NEEDED! St. Matthew is in need of more ushers for certain Masses. Our priests rely heavily on the ushers to make all parishioners and visitors feel welcome, to administer the collection and also pitch in when extra duties are necessary. It is time for our community to embrace the gifts we’ve been given and we can’t wait to see how God provides for these specific needs. Please contact the Parish or 614-471-0212 for more information or to contribute.
