Worship Service Sunday, October 11, 2015
Babies Blessed 11:00 AM 63rd Annual Men’s Day
“To all those who enter here, be thoughtful, be silent, be reverent. Before the service, speak to God.
During the service, let God speak to you. After the service, speak to others.”
Guest Preacher
Reverend Dr. Richard W. Wills, Sr. Pastor Elect, Friendship Baptist Church of Atlanta, GA

Call to Worship
9 am Roderick MacKnell

Leader: God, give us men! Times like these demand strong minds, great hearts,
true faith, and ready hands.
People: God of light and life, ignite our passion for justice, renew our
faith, and inspire us to imagine the possibilities of a new day’s
dawning.
Leader: In this hour of worship, we gather as a village to celebrate the gift of unity.
We stand as intercessors for black boys, men, and families challenged by
the evils of a school-to-prison pipeline, targeted policing, and a system of
mass incarceration.
People: Deliver us, O God, from the temptation to sleep when we should
be awake, or remain silent when we ought to speak, and ignore
wrongs we have been called to correct.
All: Wake us up, open our eyes, cut loose our tongues, and un-plug
our ears so that we might stand ready to face the living of
these days. Amen.

Once more, ye fair flowery meadows I greet ye;
My pilgrim staff hence forth may rest,
Since Heaven’s sweet peace is within my breast.
The sinner’s plaint on high was heard,
Accepted by a gracious Lord,
The tears I laid before His shrine,
Are turned to hope and joy divine,
Oh Lord, eternal praise be Thine!
The blessed source of Thy mercy o’er flowing,
On souls repentant, who seek Thee, bestowing;
Of hell and death I have no fear,
My gracious Lord is ever near.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah, eternally!

FALL 2015 SEMINAR
And Still I Rise “Up from a past that's rooted in pain, I rise” - Maya Angelou
Thursdays, October 22 & 29 | 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM | Vestry
Instructors: Abyssinian Ministers & CONNECT
God provides healing for the journey of life, but the first defense against violence is
knowledge! The Abyssinian Institute for Christian Education in cooperation with
CONNECT, an organization dedicated to preventing interpersonal violence and
promoting gender justice, will present a special awareness seminar on Domestic
Violence. Domestic violence takes on many forms, but through a carefully guided
Bible study and interactive engagement, we will shine a spotlight on violence against
women. African-American women experience intimate partner violence at rates 35%
higher than their Caucasian counterparts and 2.5 times the rate of men and other
races.[1] Our goal is to expose problems that lead to domestic violence and identify
what we can do to prevent it in our community. We will also provide information on
resources and referral services. Come out and get the facts! If you have daughters,
sisters or friends, join this enlightened two-part seminar on domestic violence and
SHARE.
SPECIAL EVENTS
In 1955, Emmett and his cousin, both from Chicago, went to visit their family in
Money, Mississippi. According to several versions, Emmett whistled at a white woman and others say he grabbed her hand and asked for a date; other reports
indicate that all he said was "bye, baby" as he left the store. Myths, lies and misinformation abound.
This play explores the impact of the brutal murder of Emmett Till and the
powerful ripples of change that transformed America but also introduces a young boy whose vibrant personality and charismatic disposition always left a wrinkle in
your forehead and a smile on your face, and that is what will be forever missed.
