MINISTRY
Health and Emotional
Well Being Tips for 2016
presented by
The Abyssinian Baptist Church
Medical Ministry and Health Ministry
Being emotionally and mentally healthy doesn’t mean never going through bad times or
emotional problems. We all experience disappointment, loss, and change. While these are
normal parts of life, they can still cause sadness, anxiety, and stress. Taking care of your body
is a powerful first step towards mental and emotional health. The mind and body are
linked. When you improve your physical health, you’ll automatically experience
greater mental and emotional well-being. Exercise not only strengthens our heart
and lungs, it also releases endorphins, powerful chemicals that energize us and lifts
our mood.
Get enough sleep. Most people need seven to eight hours of sleep each night in order to
function optimally.
Learn good nutrition. The more you learn about what you eat and how it affects your energy
and mood, the better you can feel. Exercise to lift your mood. Exercise helps relieve stress,
anxiety, and depression. Look for small ways to add activity to your day; To get the most mental
health benefits, aim for 30 minutes or more of exercise per day.
Get a dose of sunlight every day. Sunlight lifts your mood, so try to get at least 10 to 15
minutes of sun per day.
Do things that positively impact others.
Being useful to others and being valued for what you do can help build self-esteem.
Practice self-discipline. Self-control naturally leads to a sense of hopefulness and can help you
overcome despair, helplessness, and other negative thoughts.
Try taking an adult education class, Abyssinian Christian Education class, join the Book
Club, visit a museum, learn a new language, or simply travel somewhere new.
Enjoy the beauty of nature or art
Listen to music that lifts your mood, place flowers where you will see and smell them,
massage your hands and feet, or sip a warm drink. MEDITATE AND PRAY.
Engage in meaningful, creative work. Do things that challenge your creativity and make you
feel productive, whether or not you get paid for it – things like gardening, drawing, knitting,
writing, playing an instrument.
Take time for leisure. Do things for no other reason than that it feels good to do them. Go to
a funny movie, take a walk on the beach, listen to music, read a good book, or talk to a friend.
Play is an emotional and mental health necessity.

good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.
DAY 2 - January 2
Acts 16:25-26 - And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the
prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors
were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
DAY 3 - January 3 1 Peter 2:9 - But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special
people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him
who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
DAY 4 - January 4
Psalm 34:1- I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise
shall continually be in my mouth.
DAY 5 - January 5 1 Peter 1:3 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant
mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
DAY 6 - January 6
Psalm 9:1-2 - I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to
Your name, O Most High.
Day 7 - January 7
Psalm 113:3 - From the rising of the sun to its
going down The Lord’s name is to be praised.
DAY 8 - January 8
Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatever things
are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything
praiseworthy - meditate on these things.
DAY 9 - January 9
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus
for you.
Day 10 - January 10 Psalm 9:1-2 - I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to

heaven is at hand.
DAY 12 - January 12
Luke 5:31-32 - And Jesus answering said unto
them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
DAY 13 - January 13
Acts 3:19 - Repent ye therefore, and be converted,
that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not
knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
DAY 15 - January 15

tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Day 17 - January 17
Romans 5:10 - For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son,
much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
DAY 18 - January 18
Matthew 5:23-24 -Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before
the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
DAY 19 - January 19
Colossians 1:20-22 - And, having made peace
through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be

DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

AT FIFTH AVENUE
“…And when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every
hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of
God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics,
will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: Free at last!
Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we’re free at last!”
Excerpted from “I Have a Dream” Speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - August 28, 1963

ABYSSINIAN INSTITUTE FOR CHRISTIAN EDUCATION 2016 WINTER SERIES
ABYSSINIAN: Our History and Our Future Tuesdays: January 12, 19, 26 | 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM | Vestry
Instructors: Reverend R.L. Bachus/Archives & History Ministry Leaders
Today’s Abyssinians know their way to the Deacons’ Room, and the Blue Room. They can find
the elevator and the Pastor’s Office. But, do they know where the church Roof Garden and
Ladies Lounge were once located? What about the Adam Clayton Powell Memorial Room? Are
members familiar with the plaques and personalities that adorned and enhanced our church since
we moved uptown in 1922-1923? Join these special sessions and explore our rich history as we
learn about the 1940s Vermont Project and how our present GoWest campaign continues the
tradition of Black Joy and winning more souls for Christ.
Theological Table Talk: Between the World and Me Fridays: January 22, 29, February 5 | 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM | Vestry Instructor: Minister Rashad Moore
"[Y]ou are the bearer of a body more fragile than any other in this country” - Ta-Nehisi Coates
Michael Brown, Renisha McBride, Eric Garner, Freddie. Gray, LaQuan McDonald … Over the past
year, America has seen violence inflicted on black bodies. From children attacked at a pool party,
to a young girl thrown from a classroom desk by a school safety officer. The incidents and many
others lead us to ask the hard question, “How does one live free in a Black body?” This is the
question at the center of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ book, Between the World and Me. Start your new
year off with a reading group as we wrestle with the complexities of our contemporary life
through a theological lens. Attendees are encouraged to read the book before the sessions
begin. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have
it abundantly” John 10:10
Spiritual Gifts Workshop Tuesdays: January 26, February 2, 9 | 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM | Blue Room Instructor: Minister Pamela Mason
Have your spiritual gifts led you to the right ministry? The Holy Spirit is the power source for all
spiritual gifts. By grace these gifts are designed to complement and strengthen the Body of Christ
when they work in harmony together to edify God and fulfill the Great Commission. Whether
you’re worshiping, teaching, serving or witnessing to others; the Holy Spirit has gifted you to be
a blessing in someone’s life. Come into 2016 with a fresh awareness of your spiritual gifts and a
deeper understanding of how the Holy Spirit operates through the hearts of believers to build
God’s kingdom here on earth. We will explore the diverse mix of spiritual gifts and identify how
the gifts bestowed upon you can enhance your ministry work and assist you in winning more
souls for Christ.
Pray Versus Prey Tuesdays: February 2, 9 | 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM | Vestry Instructor: Reverend R.L. Bachus In the animal kingdom, animals that do not have the means to defend themselves become prey.
This same principle applies in the spiritual kingdom for believers in Jesus Christ. If we do not
have the means to spiritually defend ourselves through the power of prayer, we become prey.
This course will explore the biblical tools God has provided believers through defensive prayer
to stand strong in our faith and offensive prayers to take charge of our lives.
