Calling All Healthcare WorkersThe Safety Committee continues to work on processes to ensure a swift and effective response to a wide variety of events that may occur on campus. As the healthcare representative on this committee, I am hoping to identify the folks who have special exper-tise to contribute in case of a health-related event. If you have special training in the health field—doctor, nurse, RT, EMT, etc.—please send your name and area of expertise to me at [email protected] or to the church office. This will not obligate you in any way; it just helps us have a better understanding of the resources we have available.

From Pastor Laura: How to Help the Rev. Sheldon Johnson You may remember my mention of the Rev. Sheldon Johnson in my sermon on July 8 … or you may have heard of the tragedy that’s befallen Sheldon and his family. I’ve known Sheldon as long as I’ve been in ministry. He is a dear friend. And my heart breaks for him as he faces the future so differently than he anticipated.

Sheldon has served churches in the Rio Texas Conference since 1988—McCamey, Smithville (where he met and married Sharon), Brady, Kingsville First, Lockhart, El Campo, and Goldthwaite. He also has been active in the Emmaus and Chrysalis community, where he touched many lives. Sheldon is known and loved by so many throughout our conference. He and his family began a new ministryjourney into retirement on July 1.

Page 3: Worship Services - Oak Hill UMC · July 29 is the fifth Sunday of the month, which means Miss Penny Banks (pictured above) will visit the Sanctuary! Money collected during all three

As Sheldon and his family completed their move and drove to their new home, an oncoming pickup moved into their lane and hit both vehicles head-on. Sheldon’s wife, Sharon, and their only child, Ray, died on scene. Sheldon and his sister-in-law were critically injured. Sheldon was transported to Seton Hospital in Round Rock, where he underwent several surgeries. He currently is under treatment in a rehab setting. The doctors expect Sheldon’s recovery to take a full year.

This all happened just one day into Sheldon’s retirement.

A “Go Fund Me” account to help Sheldon with his medical expenses has been set up by the Rev. Scott Bradford, First UMC–San Angelo. If you’d like to contribute to this “Go Fund Me” account, here is the link:

https://www.gofundme.com/sheldon-johnson-medical-expensesAlso, please include Sheldon on your prayer list in these upcoming months. The grief surrounding this sad event will be eased and guid-ed by the Spirit’s presence, through the prayers of friends and strangers alike. And I know Sheldon will be grateful.

God’s Peace, Pastor Laura

Lemonade and Cookies Will Support a Fresh StartWhat better way to cool down during the dog days of summer than with a quenching class of lemonade along with a delicious home-baked cookie? Even better, enjoy the treat knowing you are helping some young women get a fresh start to their lives.

On Sunday, Aug. 12, the Community Ministries team will partner with mom/daughter teams throughout the church to offer these treats, free of charge, in the courtyard all morning. Drop by before or after worship, on your way to drop off kiddos or pick them up, and enjoy a sweet, refreshing break from the summer sun. While you’re there, we invite you to talk to one of our volunteers or pick up a handout about The Refuge, a residential treatment/recovery center opening soon in Bastrop County to provide an oasis for heal-ing and new beginnings for young girls recently rescued out of sex trafficking.

Specifically, Oak Hill UMC and other area churches have been invited to help furnish the chapel on The Refuge site. Those enjoying free lemonade and cookies are invited to make a love offering in support of The Refuge chapel. Cash, of course, is welcome, but if you choose to make your gift by check, make it payable to Oak Hill UMC with “The Refuge” in the memo line.

This is the latest of several initiatives our church has undertaken to help this program. Last year, members of our craft team fashioned clay doves that we donated to the mural project for the center. Other doves were offered at The Cross Project with proceeds donated to The Refuge. This spring, our quilting group donated 20-plus beautiful quilts and matching pillow cases to The Refuge. Girls entering the program will be able to select among the beautiful quilts to select one for their very own to use while at The Refuge and to take with them when they are ready to step back into the world. Our quilters explained it as a way to wrap the girls up in love from God, of course, and from friends at Oak Hill UMC.

Please drop by on Sunday, Aug. 12, enjoy your fill of lemonade and cookies, and give generously in support of this recovery program.

Save the Date: Benefit Concert for Andrew Green Sunday, Sept. 16 3 p.m. SanctuaryPlease join us in the sanctuary Sunday, Sept. 16, at 3 p.m. for a special benefit concert for musician Andrew Green.

Andrew was the concertmaster for the 2017 Christmas Eve cantata at Oak Hill UMC. During the 9 p.m. service, Andrew had a stroke which has left him with minimal movement on his left side. This is certainly a devastating tragedy for this young man. Andrew made his living as a professional musician and teacher. At this time, it is quite possible that he will never play the violin again. Andrew has accrued astronomical medical expenses, and many in the Oak Hill community have requested information about assisting in this area. Funds collected at the concert will go to help pay his medical expenses.

Andrew received a graduate degree in violin performance from UT. His teacher, Professor Laurie Scott, and Oak Hill UMC Director of Music Suzanne Pence are planning a concert that will include many of his UT peers and colleagues, along with the Oak Hill UMC Chancel Choir. Andrew is helping with the repertoire selection, and we are excited to present this outstanding program of orchestral and choral works.

There will be more information to come regarding ways in which to make a contribution.
