Zero-leakage, sealless pumps are becoming the standard for pumping hazardous or highly toxic fluids.

And when it comes to choosing between the two basic types of sealless pumps - canned motor or magnetic-drive - the trend has been toward magnetic drive pumps because they can be repaired in the field and are easier to maintain.

The Worthington DM-1000 pump line is a new generation of magnetic-drive, sealless pumps which incorporates the highest technology - in both magnetic-drive and liquid end design. And this design technology has been proven by a perfor-mance record that is unmatched in the industry. More than 500 Worthington magnetic-drive pumps are installed and operating successfully around the world.

The pump has'been designed for a wide perfor-mance range capable of handling a majority of process pumping applications.

• Heads to 450 feet • Capacities to 900 gpm • Temperatures to 480 F

Advanced rare earth magnet design. The unique magnetic-drive design utilizes the latest advances in rare earth magnet technology. Standard inner and outer rotor magnets are high density Neodymium which has excellent torque transmission capability at moderate temperature. Optional Samarium Cobalt rare earth magnets are used for higher temperature applications.

Besides increasing efficiency, the more powerful rare-earth magnets allow for a more compact design.

Performance-proven liquid end. The liquid end features the same high efficiency closed impellers and casings used on Worthington ANSI pumps since the early 1970's.

Since then, this design has given users hundreds of thousands of hours of reliable and cost-effective performance in a wide variety of the toughest process services.

Frame mounted or close coupled. The Worthington magnetic-drive ANSI sealless pump is available in either frame mounted or close coupled configurations.

Conformance to ANSI and EPA standards. In the chemical process industries, where ANSI is the standard, a sealless pump design which meets the ANSI B73.1 dimensional and hydraulic specifications is the logical choice.

Worthington's is the first magnetic-drive design ever to completely conform to ANSI standards for both drive and liquid end and also meets the most stringent EPA standards for pollution control and safe operation.

Extensive parts interchangeability. The pump is dimensionally interchangeable with any other installed ANSI pump of the same size and material - regardless of the manufacturer (see details on interchangeable components on page 10).

This extensive interchangeability means that any installed ANSI pump can be upgraded with a Worthington magnetic-drive pump without disturbing piping, baseplate, foundation, drive or couplings.

In an upgrading situation, even if the Worthington magnetic-drive pump costs more intitially than a canned motor sealless pump, the savings to be realized through lower-cost installation will more than compensate for the price difference.

Materials of construction

Synchronous drive

The Worthington sealless magnetic design features a synchronous drive (motor speed = drive speed) with permanent rare earth magnets on both the inner and outer rotors. The magnetic attraction firmly locks the rotors together to give maximum torque transmission at any speed, so there is 100% power transmission.

With the commercial availability of rare earth magnets, this design is a much more attractive option than the traditional eddy current drive with its bulky Alnico outer magnet and inner torque ring design. The increse in flux density now possible with rare earth magnets enables us to offer more compact drives with lower viscous and eddy current losses. C

Inducer Option Reduces NPSHR up to 50%

The Worthington inducer is the first truly effective inducer ever developed for an ANSI line. When low pressures and high temperatures make NPSH a critical problem, it can reduce NPSH requirements by as much as 50%.

The Worthington inducer is positioned in front of the impeller to "pull" extra fluid into the impeller. This improved suction performance significantly reduces the NPSH requirements of the pump across its normal operating range. The result is substantial savings through designing the system with smaller, higher-speed pumps and less expensive towers, piping and valves. Inducers can also be retrofitted easily to all Worthington magnetic- drive pumps to meet new or unexpected operating conditions.

All Worthington magnetic drive pumps can be equipped with a variety of monitoring devices to ensure maximum security and safety.

1. A temperature probe can be mounted directly on the containment can to sense increased temperature due to heat generated by eddy current losses if the pump runs dry or seizes. Monitoring of can temperature is critical to prevent overheating and destruction of the magnetic field.

2. A vibration probe can be provided to sense excessive wear of the inner liquid bearings.

Typical arrangement for hazardous areas using a flameproof head.

3. A secondary containment seal can be installed on the outer bearing housing cover to provide backup protection in the event of inner can rupture.

4. A leak detector can be mounted on the adapter drain connection for use in conjunction with the secondary seal option to shut down the pump before liquid escapes to the atmosphere.

5. A motor monitoring device is available to shut down the motor if the pump seizes or runs dry.

6. Differential pressure or flow detectors can be provided at the suction and/or discharge of the pump to monitor changes in conditions.

The chart below illustrates the extensive interchange-ability of the Worthington Magnetic Drive pump. Only three bearing housings and five rotor sets accommodate 13 liquid end sizes. This interchangeability is an advantage to the larger process plant, using a number of Worthington pumps

of various sizes. It reduces the number of com-ponents needed in inventory for replacement, repair or modification of the installed units.

Standard conventional Worthington D1000 ANSI sealed pump casings and impellers are also inter-changeable with Worthington magnetic drive pumps.
