Common accusation of ythose who oppose change is that they neeed to move with the times
Nnaoscience is the cutting edge science of the 21st centuey
And it is basically the
In this case it’s the reverses and thei a s a clear move back wards
I am just back from India where there is a n avaelanche of new nanoscience and nanotechnolgy departments which are catlaysing a mutlidue of 21st century thrusting startups
I get 3 to 4 requests aweek from India and China from students who want to join my group
Under the impression it is still at sussex
Contrary to the commonly stated informatio that I quit Sussex for Florida the corerect
Some time ago as I forsaw my retirement I offered to stay ayt and help to maintain Sussexs research strength by continuing to run my Nanoscience and Nanotechnology research programme which has a well recognised InternationaL recognition. My offer was turend down and to continue my research I had

The Educationa intenrt broadcasting initiative I have just set up at FSU would have been set up at Sussex
It is Sussex that is not moving with the times
The present VC started in 1998 ad today we apparently now have a running deficit of 4 million a year and chemistry has always made postitve contributions.
It is clear that a university without the physical sciences is a third division institution. The Chancellors recent paper indicates that that is a priority
It would seem to me that the VCs job is threfold
To bring in money to run the instituion
To invest in excellence
To develop a strategy to improve the quality

I ask you to recognise there is a problem that needs to be solved but the path that is delineated in the corporate plan dis a path to ignominy a path to third division as a University and a path to Interfnational invisi bility as far as International students are concerned.
There is a massive problem and a significant segment of the problem is a consequence of this administrations lack of vision and ignorance ot the real issues that educational instituions will have to address in the 21st Century
I acknowledge that there is a serious problem at Sussex but accepting this is not a solution it will not save 750,000 pounds a year even to first order And even the not till 2008!!
But the damage to the international reputation of Sussex as a University is already incalcualble but if you as senate accept this you will only exaccerbat the problem by convincing students in the UK and the rest of the world that Sussex is not interested in the subjects on which the future of the world actually depends
This Donkey id=s dead in an academic istituion the euphemism is corporate
I get 2-3 requests a week to join my nanoscience and nanotechnology research group agt Sussex

What was the Chinese rating based on. The number of FRSs and NLs
Sussex advertising still trumpets the number of FRSs, My name is used by the Admin to encourage alumni to leave money to the Universtity. How can I allow that to continue when my discipline has been treated by this administartion as of no consequence
Our research discovery is used as the iconic symbol for Sussex Intellectual Property
How can allow My name to continue to be used am use to

What the Hell is going on. This year at Sussex we shall take on 300 psychologists and if we are lucky 30 chemists.

Has anyone asked how many psychologists the UK needs – arguably Sussex alone is supplying more than enough

Chemistry based technologies contribute some 50% of the UK GNP (35% on catalysis alone) – this makes chemistry the most cost effective educational commitment by orders of magnitude – how much does the psychology community contribute – certainly zero in first order

To create an educational system which encourages such a situation is the height of socio-economic irresponsibility and stupidity and a direct result of the Big Mac – let the kids do what they want - approach to education. The result is the educational equivalent of a Nation of clinically obese couch potatoes
Nothing epitomises Sussex’s decline more aptly than than the crisis of identity of chemists over the 40 years since the birth of the University. I have been in:
School of Molecular Sciences
School of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences
School of Chemistry and Environmental Science
School of Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Sciences
NOW - School of Life Sciences????? Who the hell though that one up – I am not in another School called the School of Science and Technology.
Sussex did everything right at inception:
1. The School of Molecular Sciences – the name was 40 years ahead of its time. This was where chemistry, molecular biology and molecular physics was taught and researched – today we would call it Nanoscience & Nanotechnolgy
2. We have had 3 Nobel Laureates and the highest number of FRSs after Cambridge?.
3. We pioneered a truly fantastic undergraduate course -Chemistry By Thesis
4. In the first two terms all Sussex science students took the Prelim Course which provided a sound basis for all of Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics
5. All Sussex students took an Arts-Science course in the Second Year
