WOW TAKES A LOOK AT SOME OF THE LATEST THEATRICAL HIGHLIGHTS

FRI 1 - SAT 23 FEBRUARYOne of Willy Russell’s funni-est and most poignant plays, One for the Road is directed by Royal & Derngate’s Lau-rie Sansom, as his last pro-duction before he leaves to head up the National Theatre of Scotland. This hilarious play takes to the Royal stage from Friday 1 to Saturday 23 February, featuring cast of well-known faces, comprising Michelle Butterly, Con O’Neill, Nicola Stephenson and Mat-thew Wait.

One For The Road is a hi-lariously observant ‘80s com-edy by one of the country’s most acclaimed writers, re-sponsible for such well-loved classics as Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine, as well as the hugely popular musical Blood Brothers.

The play finds Dennis, on the eve of his birthday, mak-ing a desperate attempt to ditch the trappings of his newly acquired middle class life. Imprisoned on Phase Two of a new housing estate and surrounded by Tupperware parties, Richard Clayderman fans and garden gnomes,

One For The Road

Dennis yearns for his youth of road trips and music festivals. Once neighbours Roger and Jane arrive to help celebrate his birthday it is not long be-fore he reaches breaking point. As the day spirals out of control, it becomes clear that the mindless vandalism inflict-ed on the estate may not be down to local teenagers after all, and his wife and friends

ONE FOR THE ROAD can be seen at Royal & Derngate from Friday 1 to Saturday 23 February, and tickets, priced from £13 to £28 can be booked by calling Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk.

TUE 15 & SAT 19 JANUARYWhen beautiful, fawn-like Laura du Lay arrives in the remote county of Northum-berlandhamptonshire to take up her position as confiden-tial secretary to the reclusive Forbes Murdston, she uncov-ers a tangled web of murder, love and mistaken identity. She has ignored for as long as she can the unsettling rumours that surround her new employer, his ominous manservant Klaus and the ancient mansion. But Murd-ston’s violent mood-swings can only signify one thing...

Cooped is directed by Cal McCrystal, comedy director of the National Theatre’s recent hit One Man Two Guv’nors, and director of the forthcoming Alan Ayckbourn revival Mr Whatnot at Royal & Derngate. Cooped

A comedy classic

was created by Spymonkey in collaboration with McCrystal in 2001, and toured internationally following a sensational recep-tion across the UK. Time Out called it, ‘A beautifully crafted melodrama packed with physi-cal humour, silliness and exqui-site performances from start to finish’, and The Stage declared, ‘It is simply not possible to have more fun at the theatre than this. The End’.

Spymonkey bring COOPED to Royal & Derngate from Tuesday 15 to Saturday 19 January, Tickets are priced between £33.50 and £10, and can be booked at the Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk. The show is recommended for ages 14 and above.

29 JANUARY – 2 FEBRUARYThe National Theatre’s smash-hit comedy, now a West End and Broadway sensation, comes to Nottingham with a cast including Rufus Hound as Francis Henshall.

Richard Bean’s award-win-ning play is a glorious celebra-tion of British comedy: a unique, laugh-out-loud mix of satire, songs, slapstick and glittering one-liners.

Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes mind-er to Roscoe Crabbe... but Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother... who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a job with one Stanley Stubbers. To prevent discovery Francis must keep his two gu-vnors apart. Simple.

One Man, Two Guvnors

Sue, twitchy about the party her fifteen-year-old daughter, Abigail, is throwing over the road. As Beverly plies the guests with alcohol, cigarettes, Demis Roussos and nibbles, this horribly compelling evening descends into drunkenness and debauchery. Comedy, drama and tragedy combine into an

iconic piece of theatre. This ruthlessly accurate

and painfully funny observation of the pretensions of suburbia comedy became an instant classic when it first appeared as a BBC Play For Today in 1977, the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

Hannah Waterman, Martin Marquez, Samuel James, Katie Lightfoot and Emily Raymond star in Abigail’s Party, one of the most popular plays ever written.

In defiance of their families and in secrecy from their closest friends, hopeful young lives burn amidst a celestial and cataclysmic backdrop. SUNDAY 27 JANUARYFrench conductor Fabien Gabel makes his Northampton début leading the Royal Philharmonic Or-chestra in Janina Fialkowska Plays Chopin, a concert featuring three of the Romantic era’s most distin-guished composers.

Brahms’ darkly powerful Tragic Overture introduces Cho-pin’s Piano Concerto No.2. Per-formed by Canadian pianist Janina Fialkowska, it is a work of variety, containing lyrical melodies, elabo-rate ornamentation and Polish folk music influences. Finally, the audi-ence is transported to the country-side to revel in the glorious musical landscape of Beethoven’s ‘Pasto-ral’ Symphony, its popular ‘storm’ movement surrounded by music of sunny grace and rustic charm.

Enjoy the wit and wisdom of WOW (and some of our illustrious friends!), here to help you turn some of life’s potential stumbling blocks into stepping stones!

o matter who you are, where you’re from or how much

you earn, there are certain decisions and potential obstacles that everyone out

there in WOWland will have to negotiate in the same key phases of our lives.

Here’s a few little pointers we’d like to share!

As soon as you’re home from hospital, Mum insists that you look your best, with only the finest accessories for under-ones. And so to the tiny, giant step of day nursery... “Hugs can do great amounts

of good, especially for children.”

Learning isn’t all done in the classroom – awareness, a sense of balance and life skills can be learned through yoga or even messy play!

“If someone had told me I

would be Pope one day, I would have studied harder.”

“The hardest thing in the world to understand is the

income tax.”

Hair, teeth, hip, thighs, eyes, skin... And women like to look their best, too!

“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful

lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you

are never alone.”

According to a survey by parship.co.uk, two-thirds of UK singles have now tried online dating. Some relationships just

Based in the heart of Market Harborough, Head Candy hair salon, formerly situated on Ab-bey Street has recently relocat-ed to 26 Church Street Market Harborough.

There’s some history behind the hair as this historical build-ing was built in 1624 when it was once a famous inn. With interesting cellars, a secret passage way to the church, and original features. The inn was said to accommodate King Charles 1st and many of his sol-diers prior to his defeat at the battle of Naseby in 1645.

The 1950’s saw the start of the building trading as a hair salon and has since then fash-ioned hair through the ages to

A life-sized model of The Queen with her corgi, made from all sorts of ‘rubbish’, (including gallery leaflets) is one of the exhibits. This has become quite an exhibition mascot.

‘Reincarnated Rubbish’ is full of witty, humorous and thought provoking constructions. The aim of the exhibition is to whet the appetite, inspire and encourage everyone to
