    Perfect Presents

Aim: Learners write a response to an email request for help, giving suggestions and

    imagining their possible consequences.

    Topic: Giving presents

    Writing Sub-skill: Giving advice

    Language Focus: Conditional phrases

Materials: Unfinished conditional phrasesEmail from a friend

    Pre-Task Time: 25 mins

    Post-Task Time: 15 mins

Concept: Being asked to make suggestions about what to buy people for special occasions isvery common. Learners are asked to think about the presents they might buy for afriend while considering how to phrase such suggestions. The task asks them toreply to an email from a friend and imagine what gifts might be suitable for a range ofpeople.

    Pre-Task Procedure:

1 Ask learners when they usually buy presents, for whom and what they have bought recently and why.

2 Tell learners to think about a friend and what kind of presents they like getting. Then hand out theunfinished conditional sentences and ask learners to complete them about their friend. Pairs exchangeideas before comparing how they have finished the sentences grammatically. Elicit possible ways to

complete each of the sentences. Elicit which sentences are first and second conditional. Ask learners tocircle commas in the phrases and elicit that they must use a comma to separate the two clauses only if thesentence begins with if (or since / because which act as substitutes here).

3 Tell learners they are going to read an email from a friend asking for present ideas. Learners read theemail and underline the information in the email which might help them decide on a present for each person.

4 Pairs discuss present ideas and make more notes in the box on the right, considering the facts they haveabout each person.

    Task Procedure:

1 Learners write a reply to their friends email, including at least one suggestion for each person and using

    hypothetical language to do so.

    Post-Task Procedure:

1 Learners read each others emails and choose the best present suggestion for each person.

2 Collect in the emails and mark them according to the Task Specific Mark Scheme. Tick everyconditional phrase used correctly. Write , if a comma should have been used.

3 Encourage learners to rewrite their emails to learn from their mistakes and remind them to use as wide arange of hypothetical language as possible.

4 Re-mark second drafts quickly, praising improvements wherever possible.

5 Record final marks for the task in the learners Writing Portfolios.
