WPS Newsletter Engage Explore Excel Welcome Back - The Wantirna Primary School community has had a positive start to the New Year. We welcome back existing families and those joining us, either at the end of last year or in 2018. The Singh, Blundell, Morley, Aspiridis, Preyser, Ram, Rist and second Singh families have had a smooth transition to their new classes or to Foundation and we look forward to getting to know you at our upcoming community events. Our appreciation is extended to Michelle Mclean for keeping an eye on the vegetable garden over the summer holidays, to Hamish Smith for helping with staining the new seating outside the Art Room and the tables and chairs. Hamish was also busy eliminating some weeds and keeping the grounds looking tidy for the start of school. Thank you to Peter Gilbert who has also been working over the summer to ensure our main building and school grounds are looking fantastic for the students’ return. Families will also have noticed that last week the Gaga Pit was built in the area behind the Library. A huge thank you to Justin George (and his trusty apprentice Luke) for taking time at home and after work to have this ready for the children to use very soon. This new addition to our playground was the initiative of the students, researched by Leisa George and funded by our families as a result of our successful Mini-Fete last year. It is further testament to what a strong community effort can achieve for the benefit of all the students at Wantirna Primary School. Acknowledgements - With the return to the main building, and with some teachers changing year levels, there has been much preparation needed over the summer holidays. Thank you to the staff who have spent time making sure that classrooms are well organised and ready for Term 1. During the first week, students participated in activities from ‘The Way To Go At Wantirna’ start up program and have set goals they wish to achieve this term. Staffing for 2018 Principal: Ms Sue Fergeus Business Manager: Ms Jenine Farley Cleaning and Maintenance: Mr Peter Gilbert Foundation/1: Miss Brogan Badrock 2/3F: Miss Kath Faichney 4/5 P: Mr Warwick Peluso 5/6 ME: Mr Brad Murfett (Monday- Wednesday) and Mrs Melitta Elliott (Thursday and Friday) Visual Arts: Mrs Lisa Poulter Performing Arts: Miss Kath Faichney Physical Education: Mr Brad Murfett ES Staff: Ms Tash Hill Mrs Shirley Thompson Chaplain: Mrs Julie Reiher OSHC: Ms Sue Fergeus School Council Elections - Information will be coming home in the next few weeks with regards to vacancies on School Council. We have a number of parents whose term has come to an end. Please give consideration to self-nominating or if you prefer you may ask another parent to do so. Any questions about this can be directed to Hamish Smith (current School Council President), Leisa George (current School Council Treasurer), Joseph Gan, Emma Gardner (PFN President) , Kirstin Jackson, Adriana Grisold, Kath Faichney or myself. Parent Information Night - Please save Thursday 15th of February in your diary as the first important date for first term. From 5.45 – 6.30 pm, the teachers will be holding a Parent Information Session in the Performing Arts/Library Building. Twilight Sports – Our annual Twilight Sports Evening will begin straight after Parent Information Night on the school oval at 6.45 pm. Families are invited to stay to have a picnic dinner and watch their children participate in fun team events. Students are encouraged to wear their house colours and to enjoy ‘competing’ in such games as the Tunnel Ball and the Hula Hoop Challenge. Student Leader Badges - Nick Wakeling has been invited to our Whole School Assembly on Friday 23rd February to present our Year 6 Captains, Year 6 Student Leaders and Junior School Council Representatives with their badges. All families are welcome to attend. Building Maintenance Funding - Families and the wider community will be very pleased to see the changes that have continued to occur at Wantirna Primary School over the summer break. The new decks and stairs have been stained, the asphalt pathways have been laid and students have returned to the classrooms in the main building. Our chaplain Julie Reiher has relocated to the main building with a new ‘Well-Being Centre’, I am sure the students will look forward to visiting her new room. The remaining internal painting will continue this term and outside will start before the Easter holidays. Working Bee -Thank you to the following families who were able to help to spread the soft fall on our playgrounds last weekend: He, Reeve, Booker, Hill, Smith, Batka and Chapman families. A special mention to the He family for their generous donation to our Buildings and Grounds fund. We appreciate your ongoing support and commitment to Wantirna Primary School. Questions to ask your child instead of “How was your day?”

What made you smile today?

Can you tell me an example of kindness you saw or showed?

Did everyone have a friend at lunchtime?

What was the book about that your teacher read?

What did you do that was creative?

What was the most popular game at recess?

Who inspired you today?

What was your least favourite part of the day?

Tell me something new that you learned today?

How did someone fill your bucket today? Whose bucket did you fill?

What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

What made your teacher smile?

What was the best thing that happened today?

If you could swap seats with someone who would it be and why?

Did you help anyone today?

Taken from 50 questions to ask your kids instead of “How was your day?”

Choosing a primary school – why Wantirna? - What makes a ‘great’ primary school? The first question parents should ask themselves when entering the front gate is what is your initial reaction? Every school has a different feel, most will have a spark or flair, which indicates a stimulating environment. Organise a tour where you can see the school in operation. Do the students seem calm, engaged and working cooperatively? Are the classrooms organised with student’s work displayed neatly? Can you notice some consistent messages throughout the school? When you enter, the classroom does the teacher smile and offer a greeting? If you speak to the students about their learning, are they polite, confident and articulate? Prepare some questions beforehand, ask friends and family members about their children’s school and why they made their choice. If you or anyone you know is looking to enrol for Foundation in 2019, or is moving to the area and seeking a school, please ask them to call or drop into the school to meet us. Regards, Sue Fergues
