WRAG Inc. Quarterly Newsletter October 2016
Waverley Retirement Activities Group Inc. (WRAG) began in April, 1974 and is the “umbrella organisation”
for more than 30 leisure activity groups for the over 50s living in and around the Monash Shire. WRAG is a
non-profit, community-based organisation with nearly 300 members, run by volunteers with support from
the City of Monash. Our activity groups meet in council halls, public places and private homes. WRAG makes
it easy to meet new friends and make retirement fun.
WRAG GAMES NIGHT
October, 2017
What a great night! Lots of members, cards, table
tennis. Pick the “Knitter” (Rona) and even some new
visitors, who promptly joined to play 500 and Jonola.
New members now will be coming to Presidents Lunch
and Casino Trip. WRAG might even try a Games Day
in 2017 to encourage some more to come.
Supper of tea & coffee, bikkies and PIZZA (eventually)

few more to come.

In addition, WRAG will have a stall at the City of Monash “Be Aware Active and Awesome” half day
Seminar, at the City Centre on Saturday 22 October 2016 from 9:00 am until 2:30 pm. Come along and
say hello! Or let us know if you want to “man” the stall.
Very best regards,
Terry Spicer
SYMPATHY –
Joan Gillespie and her husband, Ted who were long-time members of WRAG passed away within two weeks of each other. On 23rd of June and 7th July, 2016. Ted and Joan moved into the Weary Dunlop Aged Care facility recently from their home in Mt Waverley and we wish their family all the best in this difficult time. Joan & Ted joined WRAG in 1984 and looked after the Theatre Group.
Our sympathies also go to Cliff Ymer, and his family on the passing of Norma. Cliff & Norma were long term members of WRAG AT Table Tennis and the Classical Music group until Norma became unwell. Cliff cared lovingly for Norma for many years and we wish him all the best in the future. Please see the notes on the following pages from Cliff.

Notes from Cliff Ymer to his friends at the Table Tennis Club : Dear Bob – I have given the matter a lot of
thought and come to the conclusion that now is the appropriate time to retire from the group.
Cliff attached a short message to his fellow Table Tennis players thanking them for the great times had over 25
years, and at the age of 91, he is happy to pass on the honour of being the oldest in the group to a comparative
youngster, Bill. He hopes that this Table Tennis group continues to be one of the best that WRAG has to offer.
Cliff also attends the Classical Music Group and we hope that he continues in that group for some time to come.
All the best from all of us at WRAG

IRMA
Part 3 – Glenys continues the story
Irma sat at her computer typing away. She wrote some emails - so easy now. To tell
those politicians what they were doing wrong. She looked up some things she had
always wondered about, so much easier than getting the encyclopaedia out and
even found some tips on growing her beloved roses.
Irma was getting a little tired now after a restless night, so it was time for lunch
and a 'Nanna Nap'.
Feeling refreshed after her nap she headed back to the computer. Turning her
screen on, it had a warning sign, 'your anti-virus subscription is due to expire'. Oh
no! What should she do. I know - Nathan is very good on computers, I shall ask
him over tonight”. Nathan was very happy to come and help, and he could also
bring his new girlfriend Bridget with him. Irma was thrilled to be meeting his new
friend.
Nathan and Bridget came and soon reassured Irma that her computer was fine and
the warning was nothing to worry about. Nathan soon renewed the anti-virus
subscription.
Irma then noticed to her horror that Bridget had a tattoo! Just a small one on her
shoulder. A butterfly! Such a lovely girl with a tattoo. Could Irma learn to ignore
the tattoo and just see the lovely girl.
And from Anon–
OMG! She giggled to herself. Those silly little things made her giggle, and that was
good, she thought. Never mind that the first time she saw LOL at the end of a txt
message from Nathan, after he had shown her how to send and make calls on her
phone. The mobile – what a disaster that was... couldn’t work out how to find out
who had called, then saw the message from Nathan – LOL.... oh how lovely, Irma
thought. He sent me Lots of Love. Only to be told later that day that it meant Laugh
Out Loud. Well, BMD was her response.
and –
The day went past mostly like that with a neighbour calling in with some lemons,
and hinting that she loved the lemon butter spread Irma had made last year, and
returning the jars. Irma had another smile and agreed to make some more pretty
soon.
Irma pondered for a moment realising she had smiled quietly a few times that
particular day; see, she thought I can smile and it is happening more often. But,
still that niggly feeling that she had missed something.....
NEW STORY –this is a Progessive Story. The story will have a new “part” in each Newsletter, Part
3, and 4 follows, and members will be asked to contribute new parts.
If you would like to contribute to a “part”, then feel free, start writing 150 – 200 words, please. A
mystery, a love story, you choose. Add no more than one “character” in each “part” and no dates...

Why knit???
According to the American News article there are 6 main reasons why you should knit.... or
learn to knit, or teach someone to knit –
1. Having a sense of pride : Owning a unique skill is always something to be proud of in
front of your friends and family. And who doesn’t like to feel special and get complements
for his/hers skills.
2. Having the same benefits as meditation : Once you master the art of knitting, you
will feel its relaxing benefits. The repetitive rhythm, motion, and strokes you do while
knitting is like a meditation for your mind, body, and soul.
3. It eliminates anxiety, depression and stress : The sense of focus your get from your
rhythmic motion while knitting alleviates the symptoms of anxiety, stress and even
depression. Also, sitting while knitting can lower blood pressure and lessen heart rate.
4. Improves Motor Function : Knitting improves the whole function of brain from the
frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, temporal lobe, to cerebellum. In so, knotting can
be very good for those who suffers from Parkinson’s disease for them to improve the
function of their motor skills.
5. Slows Cognitive Decline : Because knitting is good for our motor skills, it also
stimulates the brain activity to keep it healthy. It was said by Mayo Clinic that those who do
crafts like knitting has about 30-50% chance to avoid mild cognitive impairment.
6. Prevents (or slows down the development of ) Arthritis and Tendinitis : Just like brain, joints have to be exercise more to keep them healthy. As Dr. Barron said, gently using your fingers builds up their cartilage, making it stronger, instead of wearing it down.
SO GET OUT THOSE NEEDLES AND START KNITTING
