Parish News
JULY 2017
FREE OF CHARGE
It is now mid June and, after all the wind, this summer weather is very welcome. I'm pleased to say the cuckoo has done us proud this year, calling for long periods on five or six days - wonderful!
This month's cover shows Marcus Kenning's steam roller. It was on display at the Wrangle Primary School PTFA's summer fayre last Sunday. A good crowd enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon in ideal conditions. Let's hope we are as fortunate with Wrangle Show.
On Saturday 3rd June a Striking competition, organised by the Eastern Diocese of Bell Ringers, was competed by five teams. In this event each team had to ring 240 changes, lasting around 8 minutes. The ringing objective was to keep the striking as clear and even as possible. The team from Boston Stump won with Alford team coming second. Such competitions move around the region and we may not get another for quite some time.
George Danby.

From the desk of your Vicar…
Well summer should be well and truly here by the time this magazine hits your door mats! I hope that it is a lovely one with lots of glorious weather in which to enjoy the beautiful part of the country we have the pleasure to call home.
Filling the news, as I write, is the appalling picture of a burning tower block in London. In the two or more weeks when you read this it will, most probably, no longer be news – the news agenda will have moved on, just as today the all too recent Manchester and London terror attacks are no longer headlines. Stunned helplessness as news broke has already turned to anger and even to blame - all of this is normal.
But I am wondering if we should not pause to learn some hard and important lessons from this tragedy. We learn in history of the Great Fire of London, we still teach this to our children, and this led to our having one of the strictest fire codes anywhere. We should learn that we must maintain that stringent approach and not relax it in any way.
The public services – the fire service, the police and the hospitals have done a wonderful job; at little thought for themselves they have worked incredibly well. We should learn that we must not cut corners on our public services, we must value and reward the work these people do and listen to them as services are equipped and modernised for the future.
As investigations continue it may transpire that greed has had a part in this unfolding tragedy – maybe cheaper goods were substituted than those specified, or essential standards compromised by cost … I don’t know but we should ensure the truth comes out, not to lay blame but to learn what may need to be put right elsewhere.
I rejoice in the way the community local to the tragedy have responded with help – clothing and accommodation, sometimes it takes disaster to remind us of the good we can find in others.
May God richly bless you

Christians Against Poverty – how it started:
With a small donation and big faith, John Kirkby started Christians Against Poverty in 1996. He believed God was calling him to sacrifice his career in finance and use his knowledge of the industry to help the poor. In his hometown of Bradford, John set off on the incredible journey of CAP. His faith adventure led him to people crippled by debt; parents who couldn't feed their children; families facing eviction and desperate people living in fear and without hope. He used his expertise to negotiate with creditors, set up budgeting systems and offer a lifeline to those trapped in debt.
John knew that people all over the country were struggling in the same way and he began looking to replicate the work across the UK. With the vital ingredients of a Church to partner with, a passionate person to be trained as a debt counsellor and the faith that God would provide, four new CAP centres were opened at the end of 1998.
Since then, CAP has rapidly grown its debt centre network and expanded its services to tackle the causes of debt and poverty too. As well as CAP Debt Help, we now help people step into employment through CAP Job Clubs, help people get control of their addictions through CAP Release Groups and a brand new service, CAP Life Skills, to equip people to live well on a low income. Our vision is to bring freedom and good news to the poor in every community through 1,000 CAP projects by 2021.

The verge cutting in Church Close is the responsibility of Mayflower. (NB: these verges will be cut between 01 June and 13 July with the second cut being between 01 September and13 October. Highway verges will be cut in June and September) Borough Cllr Dennis had nothing to report. County Councillor Skinner introduced himself. He explained that financing was the problem resulting in the grass verges being cut only twice a year.

The Clerk read out the figures in the Statement of Accounts, these were approved by the Council. The completed audit forms are in the village notice boards and on the Parish website.

Recreation Field The fencing at the entrance to the car park will be replaced. The play area has a new sign for the new Dog Order imposed by Boston Borough Council.
Message from Boston Borough Council You may have seen in the media, or the Council Bulletin, that we have recently started working with an organisation known as 3GS, who are employing Enforcement Officers to assist us in trying to change the behaviour of residents who litter, allow their dogs to foul without picking up, engage in spitting and urination etc . These Officers are empowered, by us, to issue ‘Fixed Penalty Notices’ for these offences. The fines currently stand at either £75 or £100 dependent upon offence. This Company uses the monies received from these fines to employ the Enforcement Officers so the service is, in effect, delivered to the Borough free of charge.
The Enforcement Officers have been working for a few weeks and their presence has already impacted on the behaviour of some people. One of the issues, our Members wish to see as part of this initiative, is to roll them out to the villages as well. To this end, if you have any particular problems that you’d like them to investigate, or endeavour to resolve, whether it be littering, fly tipping, failing to pick up after a dog etc, please report to Jenny Moore at [email protected] or telephone 01205 314583 and we will try to ensure that your problems are treated as effectively as those within the more urban areas.
LCC Highways Information LCC scheduled programme of works can be viewed via the LCC website at Highways Works Programmes. NO DOG POO BAG! YOU RISK £100 FINE
Tougher new rules to get dog owners to clean up after their pets have been approved by Boston Borough Council.
It is now an offence in Boston Borough if a dog walker cannot show that they have with them the means to clean up after their dog. The fine is £100.00
The only people this control will affect are irresponsible dog owners who do not clean up or have consideration for others.
In addition dog owners could also be fined £100 for allowing their dog into an enclosed children's play area or refusing to put a dangerous or nuisance dog on a lead.
Dog poo bags are available for free from Boston Borough Council's Municipal Buildings office in West Street.

Canada Day – 01 July
Canada Day is the national day of Canada. A federal statutory holiday, it celebrates the anniversary of the 01 July 1867, enactment of the Constitution Act, 1867 (then called the British North America Act 1867), which united the three separate colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a single Dominion within the British Empire called Canada. Originally called Dominion Day, the holiday was renamed in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed. Canada Day celebrations take place throughout the country, as well as in various locations around the world, attended by Canadians living abroad.
Independence Day – 04 July
Independence Day, also referred to as the Fourth of July or July Fourth, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence 241 years ago on 04 July 1776. The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and were no longer part of the British Empire.
Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, fairs, barbecues, carnivals, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States.

National Don’t Step on a Bee Day – 10 July
10 July unites the nation for National Don’t Step on a Bee Day! This year we’re calling for your help to protect our precious bees.
The recent press surrounding the ‘Bee Crisis’ has been hard to ignore. Not only do our bees help provide the honey, propolis (a red or brown resinous substance collected by honeybees from tree buds, used by them to fill crevices and to fix and varnish honeycombs) and beeswax contained within your favourite Bee Good products!
Bees also help to keep us all fed and watered! Without the tireless work of our little buzzing friends, over a third of everything we eat would disappear from our tables.
