EDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Top-ranked Wartburg College placeditself on the top tier of NCAADivision III wrestling's nationalchampionship podium for thesixth time since 1996 by capturing

the team title at the 2008 NCAA Division IIIWrestling Championships Saturday, March 8,at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids,Iowa. The Knights, who crowned three indi-vidual champions, won the team title with147 team points, 47 better than runner-upUniversity of Wisconsin, La Crosse.

The Eagles picked up a solid second-placeeffort with 100 points. Augsburg Collegeturned in another strong effort on the nation-al meet level, taking third with 87 points. Coe

College, co-hosting this year's championshipwith Cornell College and the IowaConference, gave its home fans a thrill with afourth-place finish, the program's highestever, and its first individual national champi-on in wrestling when sophomore 165-pounder Tyler Burkle concluded a perfect runat 39-0. The co-host Rams were also a factorduring the weekend, taking seventh, theirhighest finish at a national meet since takingfifth in the 1963 NCAA College Division IIIChampionships.

Wartburg added three more individual titlewinners to the all-time total with juniors JacobNaig (149), Aaron Wernimont (157) andRomeo Djoumessi (184) bringing home indi-vidual hardware. The Knights also had three

runners-up in seniors Jacob Helvey (133), T.J.Miller (197), and Brian Borchers (285). Thethree individual national championships keptalive a string of six straight years of having atleast one individual winner and the samespan of earning two-or-more individualchampions. This year's total equalled thethree champions in 2003 and pushed the pro-gram total to 27. The 147-point total markedthe fourth time since 2003 the Knights havebeen above the 145-point mark in a nationalmeet.

For Wisconsin-La Crosse, it was the school'sthird second-place finish in school history.The Eagles have now recorded 14 top-10 fin-ishes at the NCAA Division IIIChampionships, including eight in the top-

more Dan Laurent (285) both won titles.Chelf, who was selected the 2008 MostOutstanding Wrestler of the meet, capturedhis second consecutive title with a 13-2 majordecision over Coe's Tyler Jentz. Chelf, whowent 4-0 in this year's tournament, becomesthe second wrestler in school history to wintwo national titles, joining Ryan Allen (285-pound titles in 2004, 2005, 2006). Chelf is alsothe third wrestler in UW-L history to earnfour career All-America awards, joining Allenand Jason Lulloff. Along with winning thenational championship in 2007 and 2008,Chelf placed third in 2006 and sixth in 2005.

Augsburg, which entered the tournamentas the defending national champion, crownedits 43rd wrestling national champion -- arecord 39 in NCAA competition -- when SethFlodeen (125) pinned Coe's Clayton Rush atthe 2:07 mark of the first period. He was oneof five All-American placewinners forAugsburg, which placed in the top four in theteam standings for the 20th straight year -- arecord currently unmatched by any otherNCAA wrestling program in any division.

David Morgan of King's College earned hissecond consecutive title at 133-pounds with a3-1 overtime victory over Helvey. The twowrestled to a scoreless first period tie, theneach would escape respectively in the secondand third periods to end regulation tied at 1-1.

Rhode Island College's Mike Bonora cap-tured the title at 141-pounds with a 5-2 victo-ry over Augsburg's Jason Adams, whileLycoming's Matthew Miller captured theindividual title at 197-pounds.

Eighty student-athletes received All-America honors by virtue of their finish at theNCAA Championships. Three - Chelf, SUNYBrockport's Shaheim Bradshaw, and BuenaVista's Jestin Hulegaard - each received All-America honors for the fourth time. Chelfcaptured the title at 174-pounds, Bradshawtook third at 165-pounds, and Hulegaardplaced eighth at 133-pounds.

Coe's John Oostendorp was named Coachof the Year after leading the Kohawks to theirbest-ever finish at a national meet. TheKohawks' top assistant, Dustin Hinschberger,was named Assistant Coach of the Year.Rookie Coach of the Year honors went toMike Clayton of the Stevens Institute ofTechnology.
