about writing a short sentence that captivates your audience and leaves them
wanting more! If you provide that hook, you’re link is bound to get clicked.

Before becoming a pro at headline writing, you need to understand the three main types of
headlines. As you’re crafting a message, make sure to ask yourself which of these categories your
post falls into.
Primary headline categories:
1. Social Proof - The idea that people make choices based on what choices other people make.
A social proof headline will reference a public figure or indicate that many people are doing a
certain thing.
Examples:
• Why I blog (And Maybe You Should Too)
• A Simple Way to Eat Healthy That Works for Dr. Oz
2. Threat - The promise of protection if action is taken.
Examples:
• The Biggest Lie In Real Estate
• At Last, The Secret To A Perfect Serve Is Reveled
3. Gain - A benefit statement with the promise to fulfill that benefit if action is taken.
Examples:
• How To Make Money When You’re a Student
• You Don’t Have to Be Rich to Start Remodeling Your Home

By following a few guidelines, you can create a concise yet
effective headline.
How Long Should Your Social
Media Headlines Be?
Many social media platforms—primarily Twitter—has a character limit. Even if
there isn’t a limit in place, you should probably implement one. Social media is
not a place where people will read lengthy posts. Users go there to get lots of
information in a short period of time. Shorter is better!
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t provide quality text that will lead to clicks.
Here’s some tips for writing within character limits.
• Substitute long words for abbreviations.
• Leave out necessary words.
• Don’t be shy—say exactly what you mean!
• Use symbols when applicable.

And Keep Them Wanting More!
Tease Your Audience
What’s a teaser? It’s a short introductory statement that lures a person’s interest
without giving away too much information. It leaves them wanting more and
hopefully leads to a click!
Using a teaser in your social media messages is perfect because you already
have a short character limit. Also, it gives a hint toward what the article will be
about without giving it completely away.
When writing a teaser, make sure your statement is an accurate representation
of what the article is about. Otherwise, it could result in people clicking off your
site due to irrelevant information.
