Writin Com etition Short Stories for LONG MOMENTS OF PEAC In our previous issue of Sister Namibia we called on youn9peopte to participate in a writing competion con- ducted by the Cerman orga- nlsation WorldCommunity Service foryouth in Namibia, SouthAf rica,Zimba bwe, Palestine, lsrael, Cermany andthe Netherlands. For the competition, young people wereasl<ed to write a.short stbry about a per- sonalsituation in which they were afraid of or direc- tly confronted with violence. The stof ieswereto include their ideas for nonviolent solutions to such siutations, a n d more generally their ideas on howwe can achiev6 peacein our families,(om- The Namibian winners are Ninja in the middle, munities and between nations. Skilfu lly facilitated by ThobileHlophe, a youth worl<er from Durban, the girlswere able to share the pain they had experienced in their lives and give eachother support and advice. Namibianauthor NeshaniAndreas inspired the girls with readings from her novel The purpte violet of oshaan(ut and engaged them in a writing exercise to hone their expressiv-e sl<ills. The worl<shop bore fruit with z6 stories beingsubmitted to the competition in Qermany, which the judges found to be',of very high quality,although brutal and sho<l<ing." And the Namibian winners are ... NinjaHochob s, Centaurus Secondary School, Windhoel< Ronnel Coagoses, Jan Jonker Secondary School, l(atutura Ndeshi Joseph, A. Shipena Secondary School, l<atutura. crace l(andundu of Shifidi Secondary School and Hendrina Katanga of David Bezuidenhout Secondary School received special mention. TheNamibian winners willjointhe winners from the other countries in an internationalyouth camp in zoo4 conduded by the world community service, mostprobably in cermany. Thebest stories will shared among all the participating countries sothat youngpeople canlearn from oneanother about what causes violence andhow we canbuild peace in our communites andcountries. ln the meantime Parti(iPants areencouraged to develop theirstories into radio scripts or dramas to be performed on anActionDayin order to share their message with a broader audience. Sister will facilitate this process for Namibia with another workshop. Beyond this the Nambian participants are planning to establish creative writingclubs at their school unier the guidance of sister. on the following threepages areextracts from some of the Namibian stories.
