The War on Terror

Essential Question:Why is the US involved in the

current conflict in Iraq and

Afghanistan?

FREEDOM!!!

So…we are over in Iraq and Afghanistan to free the people. To give them

freedom. Right?

The Truth…?

Do we really know the truth? And if we

were shown this information how

would we respond?

Which is the correct perspective? Us…or them?

Rock, Paper, Scissors Activity[You will have 2 minutes to win as many skittles as you can.]

Capitalism vs. SocialismClassroom Activity:Rock, Paper, Scissors

Historical Reference:

Capitalism --- Students have their own skittles, and not everyone starts with the same number. As students play the game a few win lots of skittles, but most lose.

Individuals privately own industry. Freedom of competition results in unequal economic classes.

Socialism --- The teacher collects all skittles and redistributes them equally to all students.

Government takes over ownership of industry. Wealth created is distributed equally to all.

Billy Joel has a strong interest in history. "I'm a history nut. I devour history books. At one time I wanted to be a history teacher.“

“I had turned forty. It was 1989 and I said "Okay, what's happened in my life?" I wrote down the year 1949. Okay, Harry Truman was president. Popular singer of the day, Doris Day. China went Communist. Another popular singer, Johnnie Ray. Big Broadway show, South Pacific. Journalist, Walter Winchell. Athlete, Joe DiMaggio. Then I went on to 1950... It's one of the worst melodies I've ever written. I kind of like the lyrics though.”

Wait…what? Russians in Afghanistan?

“COLD WAR 1945-1992”This all began way back in the Post-WWII Era…

in the mid-1940’s!!!

Post-WWII Era: The Cold War

• The Cold War describes the tense and hostile relationship between the Soviet Union and the U.S. between 1945 and 1992. The communist government of the Soviet Union wanted to convert other countries to communism. The U.S. pledged to support free countries, or basically any country supporting capitalism, so they could resist communism. Both countries had nuclear weapons and were capable of launching a nuclear war.

• Other countries took sides in this international conflict. Many Western European countries sided with the U.S. to form NATO (National Atlantic Treaty Organization) in 1949. Eastern European countries signed the Warsaw Pact and formed an alliance with the Soviet Union.

“Support Our Troops”

• Can citizens support the troops, but protest against the war?

• Is it not patriotic to exercise one’s freedom of speech, even if it disagrees with others’ beliefs?

“Support Our Troops”

• Can citizens support the troops, but protest against the war?– Of course we support them. We just question the

validity of WHY they are there in the first place.• Is it not patriotic to exercise one’s freedom of

speech, even if it disagrees with others’ beliefs?

“Support Our Troops”

• Can citizens support the troops, but protest against the war?– Of course we support them. We just question the
