A microsystem is a device withdimensions ranging from micrometreto centimetre. It is made withmicroelectronic and micromachiningtechnologies, usually from silicon (e.g.integrated circuits). Microelectronicsand microsystems are a bridge tonanoelectronics and nanosystems(nanomachines). Their widespreadpresence in all the fields of humanlife and activities is going to growsimultaneously with the advancementof science, technology and modernmethods of manufacturing.

Students of the Microsystemscourse learn microelectronictechnologies, which are thefoundation for advancement inmicroelectronics and integratedoptics. They gain knowledge aboutdesign, operation principles, fabrication methods and applicationof various kinds of semiconductordevices, integrated circuits, microsensors, solar cells andmicromechanical devices. Thetechnological trend is characterisedby a significantly high level ofteaching; our laboratory of

nanotechnologies and semiconductorstructures is unlike any laboratory inPoland. The students also get soundtraining in computer science andexpertise in design, fabrication orapplication of microelectroniccircuits, microprocessors and matedwith them ASIC and ASIM systems.Additionally, the students getacquainted with various methodsand equipment for modernmicroassembling of electroniccircuits and special technologiesattributed to manufacturing ofmicrosystems. Having finished suchthorough training, the graduates areequipped with extendedinterdisciplinary knowledgecombining production andapplication problems with marketstrategies. Hence, they findemployment in large and mediumindustrial corporations, run ownenterprises or work in areasconnected with medicine andenvironment protection.

Optoelectronics and OpticalWaveguide Technology

An electronic engineer hasbeen always dealing withelectrons, and sometimeswith light too. Nowadays, light is becoming moreand more autonomous.Streams of photonsinjected by tiny lasers aremoving in thousands ofglass fibers with enormousspeed. They transfer andtransform information. Each photon has energyof hw. Not wonder thatthe name of a new faculty,Faculty of Electronicsestablished only threeyears ago, includes theword Photonics, whilethese two important hwletters have become itssymbol.

The Faculty isdistinguished by a number of researchand students’laboratories, covering thewhole range of micro- andnanoelectronic technologies.Thecomplex of laboratories at 61 D∏ugastreet, called “little silicon valley” isunique among the Polish TechnicalUniversities. Expensive equipment andable research staff allow forinvestigation of complex quantumstructures and for design ofmicrosystems – silicon-glassmicrorobots acting as micromachines, microlabs or microreactors.Considerable amount of this work isbeing done by postgraduate students. The application of artificial intelligenceto these works is still increasing.

The academic staff and postgraduatestudents of the faculty cooperate withforeign research groups withinprogrammes sponsored by theEuropean Union. We are involved inprojects connected with energyconversion by photovoltaic methods,i.e. solar cells. The work on applicationof near-field microscopy to analysis ofbiomolecules and nanoobjects isdeveloping very fast. We co-operatewith the universities and researchestablishments in Germany, France,Slovakia, U.K. and U.S.A. Our studentsand postgraduates spent several-monthfellowships in E.U. countries withinframes of programmes like Leonardoda Vinci and Erasmus. There are alsopossibilities to take on postgraduatestudies in Europe and in U.S.A.However, majority of our graduateswant to stay and work in Poland. Here, especially in Lower Silesia, theopportunity for interesting job is openfor well educated engineers due tolocation of numerous manufacturersand electronic companies.

The faculty of MicrosystemElectronics and Photonics is steadilydeveloping its scientific andeducational offer. We would like toprovide our students with thoroughand modern knowledge rather than toincrease the number of students.
