Water damage shuts downDuPage Children’s MuseumBy DAN FARNHAM

[email protected]

NAPERVILLE – The DuP-age Children’s Museum inNaperville is closed while itcleans up and repairs damagecaused by a flood last week.

Museum spokeswoman DeeDee McDevitt said a large wa-ter main on the exterior of thebuilding burst sometime be-tween Thursday evening andFriday morning, causing wa-ter damage on all three levels.

“[On Friday morning], the

staff that comes in to turn onthe water tables walked intoa stream everywhere,” shesaid.

The museum is expectedto be closed for at least a cou-ple of weeks, and all museumprograms have been canceled

through Feb. 8.McDevitt said the muse-

um is not sure if the weathercaused the water main break, and professionals were imme-diately brought to the muse-um to assess the damage.

While the cost of the repairsis not yet known, she said thefinancial implications will besignificant and the museumwill be reaching out for dona-tions.

The museum receivesabout 60 percent of its fundingfrom donations and 40 percent

from admission and programfees.

“The timing [of the clos-ing] couldn’t be worse becauseduring January, February andMarch, the museum experi-ences a high level of traffic,”McDevitt said.

However, she said the mu-seum also is taking this oppor-tunity with the repairs andconstruction needed to see ifthere are any improvementsthat can be made.

“The goal is to reopen bet-ter than ever before,” she said.

3Fitness goals in reach with variety of activitiesBy KELLI MURRAY

[email protected]

WOODRIDGE – A new yearis typically a time of reflec-tion and goal setting that mayinclude better eating habits, fitness goals and weight lossplans.

For individuals interestedin finding support for a new, healthy direction in life, thereare plenty of fitness opportu-nities in the area to help youreach your goal.

Whether it’s yoga, Pilates, kickboxing, swimming or freeweights, here is a look at somelocal fitness studios and whatthey offer:

Bear Paddle Swim SchoolWhile the focus on a new

year fitness goal is general-ly aimed at adults, childrendon’t need to be left out. TheBear Paddle Swim Schooloffers swim lessons for chil-dren ages 6 months and olderat 7350 Woodward Ave., Wo-odridge.

Lessons are once a weekfor 30 minutes in the 92 degreesalt water pool, but addition-al days may be added on foran additional cost, said LauraWeir, marketing manager forBear Paddle Swim School.

“We try to make it as funas possible,” Weir said. Thelessons are divided by age andability with an emphasis onsafety skill development, sheadded.

Lessons are broken downto two groups: five childrenages 6 months to 3 years oldand their parents in the poolwith an instructor and fourchildren ages 3 and older andan instructor.

The lessons incorporatepositive reinforcement, withstudents being rewarded

through skill patches thatthey can iron onto sweat-shirts, towels or pool bags.

“Some kids have a fear ofwater and we try to use funand creative aspects of les-sons such as flotation devicesand toys to make it fun to helpthem get over the fear,” Weirsaid. “Swimming is a such alife skill. It is setting them upfor success.”

The open enrollment al-lows for students to begin les-sons immediately.

9RoundNo experience is necessary

to slip on a pair of wrist wrapsand gloves for a nine-roundcircuit of punching and kick-ing heavy bags at 9Round, 1001W. 75th St., Woodridge.

Owner and head trainerCindy Sciaky opened the facil-ity this past April and said cli-ents get cardio, interval train-ing and resistance training inthe 30-minute workout.

“You are getting a full bodyworkout in 30 minutes with apersonal trainer,” Sciaky said.

Each station is set up witha variety of six different heavy

bags, upper-cut and speedbags for clients to kick andpunch for three minutes be-fore moving on to the next cir-cuit. Personal trainers roamthroughout the stations guid-ing, encouraging and demon-strating techniques, Sciakysaid.

“You don’t have to be an ex-pert,” Sciaky said. Gender andskill set don’t matter either, she added. “We do an assess-ment to see what kind of shapepeople are in and what theirfitness goals are,” she said.“People get out of the workoutwhat they put into it.”

Personal training is includ-ed in the membership, whichhas unlimited workouts perweek and no class times be-cause of the circuit nature.Once a client walks throughthe doors, they get rotated intothe circuit.

“You don’t need to have anyexperience at all,” Sciaky said.“The best thing is to come inand give it a try. We give youeverything you need. The firstworkout is always free.”

THE ORAL SURGEONQ: What is an oral surgeon?A: An oral surgeon is a dentist who specializesin performing surgery in the mouth and onthe face, especially in the area of the upperjaw. This is why oral surgeons are also calledmaxillofacial surgeons. Oral surgery is oneof the numerous specialties that exist withinthe general practice of dentistry. Specialistscomplete the training that all dentists get, butthen go on for several more years of educationand training to learn a specialty. There are, forinstance, dentists who specialize in treatingthe pulp of the tooth – endodontists; thosewho specialize in the use of appliances –orthodontists; and so on.The most likely circumstance under whichyour dentist might refer you to an oral surgeonwould be for removal of an impacted wisdomtooth. Your wisdom teeth are the last onesin the back of each group of molars. It is notuncommon for these teeth to be crowded orfail to come in properly. An impacted wisdomtooth can cause a painful infection which mayrequire surgical removal. An oral surgeon mayalso be called in to treat a facial injury from anautomobile accident or some other trauma. Heis also the specialist who might be turned to tocorrect a congenital facial malformation. Talkwith your dentist about the various areas ofdental specialty.

Firefighters rescue a boy who fell into the pond Jan. 6 at Dunham Place Park in Downers Grove.

Local first responders put on an amazing performance last week

when they rescued a boy who had fallen into the frigid waters of

a pond at Dunham Place Park. Firefighters from Downers Grove

and Lisle-Woodridge were called to the area about 3:35 p.m. – on

a day when temperatures were barely in the single digits – and

within five minutes were able to bring the boy safely to shore.

Their training paid off in a big way. Way to go!

Community members can honor the legacy of Martin Luther King

Jr. this Monday as Benedictine University will host community

service projects from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the university. Volun-

teers can donate blood, make valentines for veterans, make fleece

blankets for the needy, construct bird feeders for the elderly and

more. For information about the service opportunities, visit

www.benu.edu.

For many, welcoming the New Year includes resolutions. This has never worked for me; I usually forget about those

resolutions before the start of February. Instead, I use theholiday for reflection and goal setting; a look back to determinewhat can be done better, then I map out my near future.

This rationale keeps mygoals (not resolutions) rea-sonable and hopefully achiev-able. I put this to practiceboth personally and profes-sionally. Reflections on thechamber we now call Cham-ber630 are crowded with bothtremendous accomplishments and areas for improvement.

The merge of the Downers Grove and Woodridge chambersof commerce is at the top of both lists, providing many goalsfor 2015. With one of the best Board of Directors for which I’veever worked and a top notch, dedicated staff, we are ready for2015 and we’re ready to celebrate!

I hope you will join us Feb. 21 at the Hilton Chicago/OakBrook Hills Resort & Conference Center for The Red CarpetMasquerade Ball. We will officially install the new board, dustoff former Chairman of the Board Marc Hausmann and recog-nize an Enterprise Award winner. We are prepped for fun andhope you’ll join us. Visit chamber630.com for information.

Equipped with all new bylaws, strategic plan and committeestructure, the rest of the year will be a combination of improvedtraditional programming and some all new opportunities. Feb-ruary is the month we kick off the fourth Attainable Futuresprogram with more students than ever. These kids will havetheir heads spinning after the four great half-day sessions. TheScholarship Program already has a good start. This group willprovide scholarship dollars to a student of a Chamber Memberto further their education. The spring will take us to Spring-field to visit the haunches of the new governor; we’ll get a workout at the Up and Down and all Around (stair climb and/or5K) and taste treats at the Taste of 630. The referral groups andOwners’ Group will continue to grow and build business. Theworkforce development we’re offering is also better than ever:the New630 Professionals are geared up for social, communityand workforce programming and the Chamber630 webinarsoffer a variety of 6,000 different educational components.

I hope in some way you will be a part of our journey, wheth-er it’s joining us in Springfield, contributing to the scholar-ship, getting a workout at the Up and Down and All Around ortaking a webinar in the comfort of your home or office – I knowthere’s a way Chamber630 can engage you.

Laura Crawford is President & CEO of Chamber630.

Rauner in office nowIt took Scott Walker two years

to turn around Wisconsin. Howlong will it take Mr. Rauner to dothe same in Illinois?

Reminder, keep petswarm during cold weatherPlease have a heart and use

common sensewith regard totaking care of your beloved pets. When it’s cold outside and youare cold, so are your pets. Likeyou and I, they need to be insidewhere it’s warm and cannot sur-vive out in the cold. They are ourfamily, our loved ones and are justasmuch a part of our family as thehumanmembers are. They shouldnever be outside unsupervised, left out all night, left tied up or tofend for themselves. If you cannotdo the kind, humane and lovingthing bymaking sure your petsare safe andwarm inside, thenplease do notmake the lifelongcommitment to take on thatresponsibility. On that note, if yousee an animal in need, don’t be abystander and do nothing and say,“It’s not my problem.” Step up tothe plate, make a difference anddo the right thing. Let’s start out2015 bymaking theworld a betterplace for our pets and all animals.

Request: Install trafficsignal on Ogden AvenueI agreewith the individual that a

traffic signal would cost a lot lessthan a new fire and police stationon Ogden Avenue. Hemustunderstand I have presented theproblem of entering and exitingOgden Avenue from the Burlingtonarea to several different councilsduring the past 15 years. On oneoccasion, I presentedMayor[Betty] Cheever withmore than700 petitioners to have a signalinstalled. These petitions includedseveral police officers that saidit would help cut down thespeeding, but nothingwas done.I will gladly sign the gentleman’spetition to get the new stations onan addendum if hewill put forththe same effort to get a signal in-stalled for us. I have not been ableto get this done for 15 years andsince then traffic has increaseda hundred fold, including all thetrucks and semitrucks that haveavoided the tollways since the

huge increase in tolls and are nowusing Ogden Avenue as a bypass.Maybe, just maybe, this individualwill get a signal installed for us.

Speed radars workin Downers GroveI think the radar machines

showing up on streets in theDowners Grove area are a greatidea and an innovative use of tax-payer money as opposed to em-ploying more policemen to shootradar up and down the street.I’ve found it helps me moderatemy speed on streets such asPrairie and Saratoga avenues. Itbecomes a very self-regulatinghabit. I think it’s a great idea and Iapplaud the city for utilizing it.

Proud of downtownWestmont’s beautyThank you toMayor Ron Gunter

and village officials for makingdowntownWestmont so beau-tiful. It was sad to see the crewstaking down holiday decorationslast week. It was just as sad atthe end of the summer to see theabsolutely spectacular hangingbaskets and planters come to theirend. As a 25-year resident, I am asproud as ever to live inWestmont. Please continue to support beauti-fication efforts such as these.

WATER METER READING DEVICE PROJECT

The Village has begun a 12-month process of replacing the transmission units thatsend water meter readings from residential and business customer meters to theVillage for water billing. The original transmission units, known as MTUs, wereinstalled in 2002 and are beginning to fail. Nearly all of the 16,700 MTUs arelocated on the outside of customer homes or buildings.

The Village's vendor, Aclara, and their contractor Scope Services, will remove theexisting MTUs and install the new ones at each building over the course of 2015.There will not be service or billing disruptions when the units are replaced.

Water customers (residents and businesses) will be notified when work is plannedto occur in their area. Scope will call customers twice: two weeks prior to thescheduled replacement and two days prior to the installation.

Most MTU replacements will take less than30 minutes and will occur entirely on theexterior of the building, with the sameexterior placement as the existing MTU.For locations where the MTU is inside ahome or building, Scope will make anappointment with the customer to accessthe unit.

Scope will maintain a customer service line, 1-888-209-5075, to respond toinquiries from residents and businesses. Customers may also contact the Villagewith questions.

WARRENVILLE – TwoBrothers Tap House in Warren-ville isn’t as showy a diningvenue as its landmark Round-house digs in Aurora, but givespatrons a ringside seat at theactual brewery. The tasty farecomplements not only TwoBrothers’ extensive creationsand sampling opportunities, but more than 50 additionalbottled artisan brews from theU.S. and around the world.

Savvy fans of the craft beerenterprise, which has beengrowing by hops and boundssince brothers Jim and JasonEbel took the leap in 1996,know they can time a week-end meal with a free tour ofthe brewery. They’re offeredat 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. Sundays, withno reservations needed.

But added circus aside, theTap House is an attraction inits own right. Tables, boothsand high-tops dot the indus-trial space, whose walls sportgiant, framed versions of a va-riety of Two Brothers’ artisticbeer labels.

The restaurant notes thatall the meats are organic, anddishes are made from scratch. An added perk is that thekitchen serves late, which mycompanion and I took advan-tage of after a busy Saturday.

Scanning the menu, I readthe Brewer’s Reuben beefbrisket is brined in-house forseven days and was sad tohear it had sold out earlierin the evening. But then Inoticed the pulled pork, whichis prepared with dry rubbedpork butt smoked over applewood for five hours.

The meat was tender andperfectly spiced in a Lexing-ton-style vinegar sauce. It wassuch a generous portion that Iwould have liked a bit more ofthe coleslaw that topped it in azesty interplay of texture andflavor. In a nice touch for thewheat intolerant, gluten-freerolls can be substituted at noextra charge.

To accompany my sand-wich, I almost picked thesweet potato fries, but amglad I opted for the roasted

seasonal vegetables on the rec-ommendation of our attentiveserver. Offering terrific car-amelized flavor were squash, bell pepper, celery, cauliflow-er and carrot.

My companion pickedone of the night’s specials, achicken pot pie. He was in fora surprise. An au gratin serv-ing dish arrived capped by apuff pastry that lifted rightoff. Made to be handheld, theflaky confection was as richand buttery as a wonderful

French croissant.He enjoyed the smoked

chicken mixed with a vari-ety of vegetables, includingcelery, onion, carrots and peasmelded with a touch of savorycream sauce.

He paired it with TwoBrothers’ Northwind Imperial

Stout, which was served inan attractive snifter. The fullbar off the dining room alsooffers wines, as well as nicelyportioned samples of TwoBrothers brews for purchase. It has two televisions for thosewith eyes for more than themother lode of beers. Another

attention grabber is the enter-taining menu of craft brewsfrom the wider world.

Rounding out our supper,we split a generous dinnersalad of mixed greens toppedwith shaved radish. For des-sert, we capped the satisfyingmeal with Two Brothers’house-made cinnamon rootbeer in an ice cream float, aspicy twist on a black cow.The brewery’s other craft sodais French lemonade.

The menu extends toburgers, fish tacos, salads,N’Awlin’s Muffuletta, vegetar-ian options and desserts suchas Italian lemon cream cakeand chocolate decadence torte.

Located near its watersource of choice, the breweryis hidden away in an industri-al park off Butterfield Road. It’s well worth the search.

Trojans get first conference win

By ALEX [email protected]

ELMHURST – A pair of in-jured starters and two days offschool because of extreme coldtemperatures could not derailDowners Grove North’s win-ning streak.

The Trojans capitalized offa parade to the free-throw lineand a 22-point performancefrom senior Jordon Kedrowskito beat York 56-48 on Friday. Itwas DGN’s fifth straight win

and first victory this season inthe West Suburban Silver con-ference.

“We fought through someadversity tonight,” head coachJim Thomas said. “Devin[Blake] went down in prac-tice with an ankle injury andBowen [Marks] tweaked hisknee. They will be back [thisseason] but weren’t ready to gotonight.”

Adding to the adversi-ty were subzero wind chillsWednesday and Thursday that

forced District 99 to cancelschool and the Downers GroveNorth coaching staff to relo-cate practice.

Despite the tumultuousweek, the Trojans were able tocreate and execute an effectivegame plan for Friday night’sgame.

“We thought that we wouldbe able to pound them inside, grab rebounds and get to thefree-throw line,” Thomas said.“We also thought that wouldgive us some open looks fromthe 3-point line.”

DGN made the most oftheir trips to the free-throwline, knocking down 21 of 25attempts. Kedrowski also hadthe hot hand from beyond the

arc, as 12 of his team-high 22points were 3-pointers.

“Imissed a couple good looksearly,” Kedrowski said. “Butthe coaches and my teammatesjust kept encouraging me andtelling me to be aggressive withmy shot selection. But they keptfeedingme the ball, grabbing re-bounds, creating second chanc-es and that helped jump-startour offense in the second half.”

With the game tied at 22 athalftime, York began the thirdquarter with a 5-0 run punctu-ated by a three-point play fromguard Jayvon Thomas, whoended the night with a game-high 23 points.

But DGN battled back, tak-ing a 31-30 lead into the fourth

quarter. A Kedrowski 3 toopen the final frame gave theTrojans a four-point advan-tage, and from there the vis-itors never looked back, out-scoring York 25-17 in the lasteight minutes.

Myles Farley added 11points for the Trojans, whilecenter Dave Edwards had ninepoints and nine rebounds.

Late surge not enough to power Benet boys hoopsBy MATT LE CREN

[email protected]

LISLE – Benet’s Colin Bon-nett was on the bench earlyin Saturday’s boys basketballgame against Fenwick as theFriars built a sizable lead.

But Bonnett did his part toget the Redwings back in thegame.

After sitting out the first11 minutes of the game due toa coach’s decision, Bonnetterupted to score 23 of his game-high 25 points after intermis-sion. Unfortunately, it wasn’tenough for the Redwings, whofell 62-60 in overtime.

“Fenwick’s an excellentbasketball team and I thinkour kids showed a lot of heartand a lot of toughness downthe stretch,” Benet coach GeneHeidkamp said. “There werea couple opportunities wherewe probably could have folded, but I thought we kept battlingback. Unfortunately, we justran out of time.”

Bonnett scored the finalseven points of the fourthquarter for Benet (9-4 overall),including a layup and 17-footjumped to tie the game with 35seconds left. He also hit a trioof 3-pointers in overtime afterthe Redwings had climbed outof a 29-14 third-quarter hole.

“He’s a great player,” Fen-wick forward Mike Ballardsaid of Bonnett. “I knew he wascapable, but I can’t believe the

shots he was hitting at the end.I’ve never seen him do stufflike this and I’m pretty surehe’s been doing that all year.”

Ballard helped Fenwickwithstand Benet’s late surge.

One night after scoring acareer-high 25 points in a winover DePaul Prep, Ballardfinished with 17 points, in-cluding five 3-pointers, and 10rebounds for the Friars (11-4).

He hit a 3-pointer to start over-time and break the tie for thelast time.

“When we get in tough po-sitions at the end of the game,we haven’t responded greatthis year,” Ballard said. “[Fen-wick coach Rick Malnati] saidit was great in the overtimewhen they hit some big shotsthat we kept our composureand just won the game.”

Ballard had missed fivestraight shots when he sank a3 to give Fenwick a 47-43 leadwith 1:51 left in regulation be-fore Bonnett’s two late buck-ets.

Ballard was ready when hisnumber was called on the firstpossession of overtime.

“I was pretty sure I was go-ing to make it,” Ballard said. “Idon’t care how many I miss. I

still think the next one’s goingin, so I’m not afraid to shoot.”

But even Bonnett couldnot overcome Fenwick’s greatfree-throw shooting. The Fri-ars made 17-of-20 foul shots, including 9-of-10 in overtime.

Jacob Keller split a pair offree throws after Bonnett’s 3made it 59-57 with 24 secondsleft. Benet had a chance totie, but Bonnett’s off-balancetrey missed and Quinn Fishersank two free throws with 6.9seconds left to give Fenwicka five-point lead before Bon-nett’s final 3 capped the scor-ing.

Smith led Fenwick with 20points, while Keller added 13points. Dan Sobolewski scored12 for Benet.
