Section I - Budo “What is ‘BUDO’?”

“Budo” is a Japanese word, it means "martial way" and refers to those martial disciplines

whose ultimate goal is spiritual, ethical and/or moral self-improvement. The characters

"bu" and "do" in "budo" are rich in meaning and have many secondary interpretations.

“Bu” means "military" or "related to the military," a

character often compounded into others, such as

"bugei," "bujitsu" and "bushi." “Do” is the Japanese

pronunciation of the Chinese term "Tao" (for Tao-

ism), meaning the way to suppress violence and re-

turn to the way of the universe. Implied are Taoist

concepts of non-resistance and loss of ego (not sur-

prisingly shared by Zen since the formation of Zen

in China was derived from Indian meditative Bud-

dhism which was strongly influenced by Taoism).

But while Chinese Taoism developed strong other-

worldly or religious connotations, the Japanese had

a more practical, less abstract interpretation, one

more focused on the pragmatic dimension of human

relationships. This led to the concept of the way or

road toward self-development. This could lead to a

spiritual awakening - one of intuitive perception, in-

sight and enlightenment (as in Zen).

A similar but not fully analogous term to "Budo" in

Chinese is "Wu Shu," whose first character "wu" is

the same as "bu" in "budo." "Shu," however, is "art,"

thus the term more closely parallels the Japanese term "Bujitsu," the war arts of the pro-

fessional Samurai.

“Budo” is –then– not a sport, not as much a discipline, as a way of life that encompasses

a strict code of conduct and values, and that is what WSKF cultivates...

Section II: Technique “New WKF Rules for Kata Qualification”

The World Karate Federation has adjusted the qualification rules for Olympic Kata competition,

looking ahead toward Tokyo 2020, basically doing away with the flags, eliminating by points in the

opening round robin, as Appendix 15 indicates below:

What is expected is (1) a more just

scoring system, (2) a better single-

competitor view for the audience, and

(3) relatively stress-free solo perfor-

mances by the athletes.

In their 2012 article, titled “A Communicative Framework of Value for XSP’s”, researchers Kuschman,

Khun and Pfaerrer proposed a model to optimize the effectiveness of international NGO’s (see graph

below). As it turns out, the WSKF Venezuela Sports Foundation, since 2008, unknowingly but

wisely, followed their indications to the letter.

Following the graph and model,

the Foundation (1) enlisted the

crucial participation of instruc-

tors and parents, with formal

meetings and responsibilities,

and detailed minutes, as they

organized to raise funds for

their teams, going beyond the

martial chain of command; (2)

it developed a fundraising pro-

cess that tapped into fiscal in-

centives; and (3) sought in-

tense press coverage of their

teams’ standings in world events, which meant 266 medals won between 2007 and 2017. Social me-

dia and the organization’s support of other social causes from Japan to Venezuela leveraged the cen-

tripetal forces generated by the WSKF® brand. (4) A strategy map, first drawn in 2006 and taken

worldwide in Cyprus in 2010, represents the central authoritative text which guided the development

of the Sensei’s Manual and the Affiliation Agreement; in addition, our newsletter, BUDOtips®, was

created after polls among parents, athletes and instructors revealed their expectations (hence its dif-

ferent sections: Editorial, Budo, Technique, Management and F.Y.I.), going out every quarter to a

network of members, parents, reporters, and donors from Coca-Cola® to Liberty Mutual® In-

surance; (5) it also supported alliances with crucial stakeholders like the Sports Ministry and the

Currency Exchange Commission; (6) funds raised exceeded $4 million (at the official rate of ex-

change); the foundation even served as consultants in SRC projects for Parmalat® and Farma-

todo®, and held fundraising seminars at local universities, publishing an article on “Predictive Model-

ing for the US Non-Profit Sector”, and contributing to other editions; sister foundations sprouted in

many of the over 100 countries where the WSKF operates.

We’re preparing a fully-documented conference presentation of this fabulous case study. Stay tuned!
