Over the next few months, NYU will begin to post notices around campus about the new measure. By extending the ban, administrators hope to ensure that members of the NYU community have more smoke-free air on campus. The proposal was introduced to the NYU community last October in an e-mail by senior vice president for operations Alison Leary. It was supported by approximately 84 percent of NYU students polled by administrators throughout the following month. But as the ban approaches, some students have begun to voice opposition. Rita Biggers, a graduate student in the John W. Draper Program, said that while she understands the purpose of the ban, it would be inconvenient for smokers. "I already feel sort of chastised for being a smoker in general," Biggers said. "I would probably be annoyed if somebody told me to move away from [a] building." Others are simply wondering whether the university will be able to enforce the rule. "What are they going to do, put a security guard out here?" CAS freshman Stephen Cahill said. "Unless someone tells me I'm bothering them and asks me to go somewhere else, I'm not moving." According to Beckman, once the signs have been put up, it will be up to the members of NYU community to help enforce the policy. However, Public Safety may remind smokers of the ban. The College of Dentistry has already implemented a similar ban, and according to Michael O'Connor, the school's executive associate dean for finance and administration, there has been a noticeable decrease in smokers around the college's buildings. "We've been very happy with the results," O'Connor said. "People have been very agreeable; there's been no negativity with the policy." about | contact | work for us | advertise | classifieds Welcome! Register or Login Like 2,021 people like this. GO
