Smoking ban will gointo effect

A new ban on smoking within 15 feet of allentrances of university buildings will go intoeffect next fall university spokesman JohnBeckman said

Over the next few months NYU will begin topost notices around campus about the newmeasure

By extending the ban administrators hope toensure that members of the NYU communityhave more smoke-free air on campus

The proposal was introduced to the NYUcommunity last October in an e-mail by senior vice president foroperations Alison Leary It was supported by approximately 84percent of NYU students polled by administrators throughoutthe following month

But as the ban approaches some students have begun to voiceopposition Rita Biggers a graduate student in the John WDraper Program said that while she understands the purpose ofthe ban it would be inconvenient for smokers

I already feel sort of chastised for being a smoker in general Biggers said I wouldprobably be annoyed if somebody told me to move away from [a] building

Others are simply wondering whether the university will be able to enforce the rule

According to Beckman once the signs have been put up it will be up to the members of NYUcommunity to help enforce the policy However Public Safety may remind smokers of theban

The College of Dentistry has already implemented a similar ban and according to MichaelOConnor the schools executive associate dean for finance and administration there hasbeen a noticeable decrease in smokers around the colleges buildings

Weve been very happy with the results OConnor said People have been very agreeabletheres been no negativity with the policy

Previously smoking was only prohibited within university buildings But even that bandoesnt seem to have stopped all smoking Public Safety suspects that a trash can fire thatbroke out on the third floor of the Silver Center on Monday was started by a cigarette
