Touch of the Hand: A Hallmark of AnthropologieFind hand-crafted and artisinal goods at Anthropologie and many WSPD shops and restaurants

Its window speaks to what’s inside: sculptural, larger-than-life flowers

made by hand of unlikely materials. This thinking-woman’s ode to spring—where symbols of new life are cobbled from castoffs—is how lifestyle retailer and Westside Provisions District newcomer, Anthropologie, chooses to welcome guests into its 6,000 square-foot store.

Cutting, sewing, painting, sculpting—all forms of artistry are embraced by the Philadelphia, PA-based retailer, who operates 140 stores nationwide. Theirs is

a layered, tactile and fragrant environ-ment brimming with irreverent displays, print-happy outfits and limited-edition goods often made by local craftspeople. The WSPD store in particular features jewelry and clutches designed by At-lanta-based Caroline Mae Heidenreich and Jordan Rowland, who repurposed vintage Vera scarves in their designs.

Explore hand-crafted and artisinal goods available throughout the district in our “hand-crafted” feature on pages 4-5.

Underwater OasisThe Savvy Snoot Design Group creates an Underwater Oasis for one deserving Student

Christmas came early for one student at the Ron Clark

Academy thanks to Savvy Snoot Design Group, who designed a brand new bedroom for a deserving young student. As part of the Rob Clark Xtreme Bedroom Makeover Challenge, 15 design groups, including those representing Home Depot, Verizon and our own Savvy Snoot, were challenged to create a bedroom design based upon winning student essays.

The Savvy Snoot Design Group was paired

with a young girl whose dream it was to live among the fishes in an underwater, Greek-inspired room. Designers Marty Mason and Patti Hodgson went to work hanging colorful fish from the ceiling, painting a mural of Poseidon and even adding an aquarium. Savvy Snoot Design Group won the challenge’s Best Room Design. Most importantly, they made one girl’s dream come true.

One Whole Year of AwesomeOrmsby’s celebrated its one year anniversary last December

It’s hard to believe that in one year, Ormsby’s has

become such an integral part of the Westside landscape. With a lamp-lit interior full of tilting chandeliers, a bookcase jammed with eclectic reads, checkerboard tables, and indoor bocce, shuffleboard, ski ball and an assortment of no-technology games, Ormsby’s has quickly become the city’s go-to hangout.

Co-owner, beer aficionado and

easy-going barkeep Michael Goot is usually on hand to share the secrets of Ormsby’s beer cellar, which boasts more than 70 hand-crafted beers from around the world. Head chef Andrew Smith and sous chefs Robert Echols and Scotley Innis keep diners and revelers alike happy with a palate-pleasing menu fashioned from top-notch ingredients.

Whether you’re raising a glass, making a friendly wager on a game of bocce or proposing to your girlfriend on film inside the photo booth, Ormsby’s is a great place to enjoy friends, family and all the fun things life has to offer.

Tanner-Hill Gallery has partnered with poem88, an

independent curatorial group led by artists Robin Bernat and Karen Tauches to offer Atlanta an impressive schedule of upcoming exhibits.

Opening Feb. 19th, “California”, a new body of work by artist Sha-ron Shapiro draws from a range of photographic sources to address stereotypical depictions of women. Embracing ideas of positive femi-nism, Shapiro places the power of femininity front and center. Following the Shapiro exhibit, on

April 16th, “Marwencol”: photo-graphs from Mark Hogancamp and David Naugle will make its exhibition debut. In 2000, Mark Hogancamp, a resident of a tiny,

upstate New York hamlet, was bru-tally beaten as the result of a hate crime (Hogancamp is a cross-dresser). Having suf-fered significant brain damage, Hogancamp embarked on his own self-prescribed therapy to restore his imagination. Using GIJoe’s and Barbie Dolls as fictitious characters and stand-ins for his own neighbors along with a 35mm camera, Hogancamp presents constructed images of war, ro-mance, justice and redemption.

Faces of WSPDMeet Emily Amy, owner and curator of the Emily Amy gallery and key player in the Westside Arts District

Q: What is the Emily Amy Gallery Story?

A: We just celebrated our two year anniversary this past September! We are a contemporary fine art gallery, currently representing a stable of 30 artists both local and non-local. We represent emerging, mid-career and established artists that exhibit a broad spectrum of art that is conceptually significant and visually stimulating, with a focus on works that recall mid-twentieth century modern masters. The artists work in a variety of media, including oil, acrylic, mixed media, and collage. A combination of solo and group exhibitions, along with an eclectic, rotating inventory, enable collectors to regularly view new work and learn about ever-changing trends. The gallery is located in the Brickworks community at the intersection of Howell Mill Road and Marietta Street.

Q: Why did you locate your gallery on the Westside?

A: I felt that this area was very dynamic and in the process of establishing itself as a go-to arts and design district. Also, there is nowhere else in town to rent a building like I have with 15’ ceilings, brick walls, con-crete floors, and 12’ x 12’ windows. It is so charming.

Q: Tell us about Westside Arts District and the art walk

A: The Westside Arts District, or WAD, incorporates 10 galleries and the Atlanta Contemporary Arts Center on the Westside of Atlanta. We strive to cross-market, idea share and create programs that involve both the community and local artists. The art walk takes place on the third Saturday of each month, and each gallery along with ACAC, typically provides an artist talk, performance, film screening, or other stimulating programming in an effort to create an activity for those in the community seeking to participate in arts related events. The walk, in conjunction with WAD, has brought our area some very positive attention, as well as helped to put the Westside on the city’s radar.

Q: What are your favorite things to do/see/eat in West-side Atlanta?

A: I love to eat at Bacchanalia, when my budget allows it. It is by far the best restaurant in Atlanta, in my opinion. Even though I am not shopping for myself, Sid Mashburn is one of my favorite shops in Atlanta. I al-ways feel incredibly welcome and the service is beyond extraordinary. Their old record player spinning Bob Dylan and their ping-pong table are an added treat! One of my favorite ways to spend a Sunday is eating breakfast at Thumb’s Up Diner and then walking over to the Atlanta Contemporary Arts Center to catch their exhibition. I am thrilled with the progress in this area over the short two year period since we opened.

Introducing: Square Feet StudioThe architects and designers at Square Feet Studio have been contributing to the Westside environment for more than a decade. Meet the artists behind the area.

Brick by brick, the architects at SFS have been intimately in-

volved with the architecture of West-side Atlanta for the past 10 years. They worked as consulting architects on the master planning, retail plan-ning and programming for White Provision and provided interior de-sign services for the WP Residences. They also consulted on design for the WSPD footbridge as well as Abattoir, Room & Board, Sid Mashburn, and

numerous other retail and corporate office spaces in the district. SFS prin-cipal Vivian Bencich says, “Historic buildings with unique character offer an exciting backdrop for the new re-tail and public experience.” Bencich also points out that the melding of these high quality existing buildings with new contemporary construc-tion has set in motion a process that allows for the natural growth of a real and exciting neighborhood on

Westside. “The greater Atlanta area is now beginning to understand what a lot of us have known for a while now: this neighborhood is just really cool” says Bencich.

Square Feet Studio is an architec-ture, planning and design firm whose designers work in close collaboration with each client to create smart, simple and sustainable solutions. squarefeetstudio.com.
