The History of the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program • WSU Extension faculty in King and Pierce counties began
training volunteers to serve as community educators in January of 1973.
• The Master Gardener title was derived from Germany s gartenmeisters who were highly respected horticulturists in
their communities.
• The Master Gardener Program was adopted across the nation and overseas, making it a historic, sociological grassroots movement with widespread impact.
• Early Master Gardener programs focused on diagnostic clinics and education of the public in gardening practices.

Master Gardeners now have chapters in 30 of the 39 counties in Washington State
Volunteers are trained by WSU faculty and staff to be community educators WSU Extension provides research based scientific information about gardening, environmental stewardship and horticulture topics

Roy Van Denburgh, WSU Extension agent, established the Yakima County MG program in 1980. Classes were held in the Court House, then moved to the Arboretum and now are held at the Ahtanum Youth Park Important Websites – see pdf Historical data for Yakima County

Master Gardener Titles • Master Gardener Trainee - in basic training – classes & WSU online • Master Gardener Intern – volunteering first year • Certified Master Gardener – successfully completed all requirements and
are actively volunteering • Emeritus Master Gardener – 10 years or 500 hours decide to no longer be
active – donate 1 hour/yr – placed in back of directory
• Alumnus Master Gardener – no longer active
• Friends of Master Gardeners – must qualify / have no required hours
