From Manhattan to Williamsburg - the place of realization

Passing Williamsburg Bridge, leaving Manhatten, entering Williamsburg in Brooklyn I realized that this neighborhood was much more quiet and calm than the hectic New York City itself with smaller buildings, fewer cars and more bicycles. It was not that far from the subway and it was FBTZUPmOENZXBZBSPVOE1FPQMFIFSFMPPLFEMJLFIJQTUFSTUIPVHICVU*HVFTTUIBUTUSFOEZOPXBEBZT*BDUVBMMZMJLFEJU"MPU

Not too long ago I met this girl on my way from Manhatten to Williamsburg visiting my friend who lives down on Keap St. crossing Ainslie St. a OFXFSQBSUPG8JMMJBNTCVSH*EJEOUOPUJDFIFSBUmSTUCVUTVEEFOMZTIFUVSOFEUPNFGPSEJSFDUJPOT4IFXBTHPJOHUP,FBQ4UDSPTTJOH4th St. I thought she was kidding, what a coincidence.

On our long walk down Keap St., we talked about everything and nothing. She told me she was studying architecture in Denmark and was here in NYC and Williamsburg to study the atmosphere, buildings, connections, roads, people, and details. She seemed really into her learning and understanding of architecture. I wish I had that same passion for something…After I walked her to the place she needed to be, I looked around while she started sketching and taking photograph of things I never would have thought could be photographed. I said goodbye but didn’t hesitate to walk to my friends house, there was something about this girl and her way of thinking I really liked.

Walking to my friend’s house I still kept looking at things just as she told me to. I was very amazed by this positive/negative space around the CVJMEJOHT XJOEPXTBOEGFODFT OFWFSUIPVHIUPGUIBUCFGPSF*NEFmOJUFMZHPJOHUPUFMMNZGSJFOETBCPVUJUþ*UXBTWFSZEJGGFSFOUGPSNFBOE*TUBSUFEUIJOLJOHPGIPXUIJTQMBDFLJOEPGSFNJOEFENFPGIPNF 1FOOTZMWBOJB5IFBUNPTQIFSFBOEUIFDBMNTVSSPVOEJOHTHBWFNFnBTICBDLTUPUIFmTIJOHQPOE UIFGBSN SFMBYJOHUJNFBOEHFUUJOHBXBZGSPNUIFCJHDJUZ#VUFWFOUIPVHI8JMMJBNTCVSHSFNJOEFENFBMPUPGNZIPNF*still think it would be nicer if all the window fences came down, the sidewalk would be more open and friendly, like at my hometown. I know New York and Williamsburg has a primary degree of crime, but I believe the barrier would be less noticeable if they took their guarding cover down and welcomed people inside.

During the long walk all by myself, I looked at these small dried-out restaurants, I believe that just 10 years ago or less there had been a great and lively atmosphere here with lights and open windows where you could hear people talk and giggling. It’s a shame that it’s all gone now. I DPVMEBMNPTUTNFMMUIFNFBUCBMMTGSPNUIF*UBMJBOEJOFSBOEUBTUFUIFTFBGPPEGSPNBmTISFTUBVSBOU*WFIBWFBMXBZTMJLFEUPDPPL*IBWFBMXBZTdreamed about being a chef, just like my mom. I just dropped out of university, I was studying odontology but I realized that it was the wrong path for me, so now I’m doing nothing and it freaks me out!I was kind of jealous of the girl from Denmark, when I think about it. The way she was so passionate about life and shined when she talked to NF UIFXBZTIFTBJEUIBU*XBTHPJOHUPCFBMSJHIU UIBU*KVTUOFFEFEUPmHVSFPVUXIBU*XBOUFEUPEPXJUINZMJGFTaking chances. I did.

Scrolling things forward, today I study at the culinary school in Soho, New York. I love it. It’s the best thing I have done for years. I’m actually al-SFBEZQMBOOJOHPOPQFOJOHNZPXOSFTUBVSBOUJO8JMMJBNTCVSH5IBUXJMMCFNZOFYUHPBMJOMJGF

About that girl from Denmark.. Well, it happened that I didn’t go all the way to my friend’s house yet, but went back to S 4th St. and asked for her number. I had to keep in touch with her. She made me realize a lot. Today we still talk over Skype and Facebook – I live in Williamsburg now and take the same walk everyday through Keap St. and stops at S 4th St., just to inhale what’s around, noticing all the small details and everything I love about it, just like her.
