The Great BritCom Vote �014WTVP is shopping around for new “Brit Coms” to add to our schedule…and you get to help us decide! Tune in Saturday, March 1 starting at 7 p.m. for The Great BritCom Vote �014 as we sample five British comedies—two classic titles and three never-before-seen on WTVP. Just sit back and enjoy, then call in to vote for your favorite. Your votes will decide which series will win a spot in our BritCom Saturday night line-up, and your support will help make it possible.

The candidates vying for the coveted position are:Fawlty Towers (7 p.m.)—Regarded as one of the greatest British TV shows of all times, John Cleese’s Fawlty Towers mixes the best in biting repartee with intense physical comedy to celebrate the wonderful rudeness of the manic and arrogant hotel manager whose life is plagued by dead guests, hotel inspectors, and the chaos he brings mostly upon himself.

Hebburn (7:40 p.m.)—An affectionate tale of north east family life, Hebburn tells the tale of the Pearson family and their impetuous and ambitious son, Jack, who has secretly married (while drunk in Las Vegas) a middle-class Jewish girl, Sarah, and realizes that it is

about time he introduced her to his family.

Moone Boy (8:�0 p.m.)—A warm family comedy series, Moone Boy is about a young boy growing up in a chaotic

and creative household in late 1980s Ireland. This semi-autobiograph-ical series is written by and stars Chris O’Dowd as the imaginary friend of 11 year-old Martin, the youngest child in the large, loud Moone family.

Spy (9 p.m.)—Tim (Darren Boyd) is a single father trying to win back the respect and affections of his horribly precocious nine year-

old son, Marcus. In the hope of proving that he is not a complete loser, Tim quits his dead-end job—but life changes forever when he is accidentally recruited as a trainee Spy for MI5.

The Vicar of Dibley (9:45)—When their vicar passes away in the middle of a service, the inhabitants of the small Oxfordshire village of Dibley expected his re-placement to be another old man with a beard, a Bible and bad breath. Instead, they got a babe with a bob-cut and a magnifi-cent bosom. The Vicar of Dibley is a woman—yes, woman—who enjoys nothing more than a good laugh and a packet of chocolate hob nobs.

WTVP is presenting The Great Brit-Com Vote in partnership with fellow PBS station WILL-TV. The event, now in its 15th year for the Urbana station, will be broadcast live from the WILL studio with help from WTVP engineers and familiar on-air faces. Votes (and monies raised) will be tallied separately by each station. May the best comedy win!

The EntertainersTake a joyful trip behind the scenes of the 35th Annual World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest in The Entertainers. This romp of a perfor-mance documentary premieres Monday, March 3 at 8:30 p.m. in partnership with our friends from WILL-TV.

For thirty-five years, piano players from across the world have strapped on their bow ties, arm garters, and straw boater hats and descended on Peoria, Illinois to battle for the title of World’s Greatest Old-Time Piano Player. With humor, passion and an unsurpassed devotion to the old-time music—specifically Ragtime—these players compete to claim glory and to remind the world that Ragtime, the first truly American popular music, should not be forgotten just yet.

The film features a cast of true characters, all stellar musicians com-peting at the top of their game who approach the competition—and life—with purpose and style. Audiences will meet The Prodigy, The Spirit, The First Lady, The Innovator, The Showman and The “Per-fessor” and be treated to plenty of music along the way.

Watch…Dr. Seuss’s birthday is right around the corner, and PBS KIDS is hosting a week-long BIRTHDAY CAT-EBRATION! Four brand-new episodes of The Cat in the Hat knows a Lot about That! air over the week of March 3rd, starting with a full hour of back-to-back premieres that Monday at 7:30 a.m and again at � p.m.

Read…March 3 is also Read across america Day! Celebrated annually on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, this special day was created to motivate kids to read—and parents to create reading-as-a-family habits. Write…The pBS kiDS Writers Contest is in the home stretch! Entries are due here at the station (or postmarked) by 5 p.m. on Friday, March �1. WTVP’s virtual golf outing last month has put many of us in the mood for the real thing. Now if only Mother Nature and her silly groundhog would cooperate.One good thing about the extremely cold weather is that it did keep people indoors to bask in the warm glow of their television sets. Hopefully you did not have to tune in to that video of the fireplace, but rather you were warmed by the sparks generated by Downton Abbey and Sherlock on Masterpiece with their delicious storylines and hot plots. And for you Doc Martin fans, thank you. The marathon to raise revenue to acquire season six and renew earlier seasons was hugely successful. As I write this, we are in negotiations with the distributor to keep the good doctor and the citizens of Port Wenn on WTVP.

March is traditionally the main month when viewers like you take to the phones and the web to let us know with your membership gifts and renewals that we can count on you to keep WTVP strong. It is no secret that memberships like yours are our major source of funding. You do make a difference at this, your local public TV station. Thank you for taking the time during the next few weeks to do your part.

Downton Abbey may be over for the season, but the great drama continues. Watch for a Mr. Selfridge special during the March membership drive and for Season 2 of the spectacular drama later in the month on Masterpiece. If you are not familiar with the series, it’s about a former employee of Marshall Field & Company who moves to London and starts a merchandising revolution with

his eponymous department store—and all the intrigue and interpersonal drama that accompanies the effort. And also starting later this month is a brand new season of Call the Midwife—one of my favorites for its writing, characterizations and drama. The good stuff continues on public television thanks to your support.

Finally, congratulations and a huge thank you to Stacey Tomczyk, WTVP’s Promo-tions Director, who has agreed to serve as our Interim Program Director following Linda Miller’s retirement last month.

Mark your calendars on March 30 for the return of acclaimed dramas Call the Midwife and Masterpiece’s “Mr. Selfridge”.

Call the Midwife, Season 3—Sundays, March 30- May 18, 7 p.m.The third season of Call the Midwife takes viewers back to East London. It’s now 1959, the eve of the Swinging Sixties. The winds of change are sweeping through the country and the residents of Nonnatus House face some momentous changes of their own. Throughout the season, viewers will follow the joys and heartbreak of the midwives as they continue to care for members of the Poplar community and face management changes at Nonnatus House. Based on the best-selling memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth, Call the Midwife tells colorful stories of midwifery and families in London’s East End. The series contains mature content and may not be sutable for all audiences. Viewer descretion is advised. Rated TV-14.

Masterpiece Classic “Mr. Selfridge, Season 2”— Sundays, March 30-May 18, 8 p.m.Jeremy Piven returns as the flamboyant American entrepreneur, Harry Gordon Selfridge, who founded London’s famous Selfridge’s department store—the store that never sleeps! This sumptuous new season picks up the story in 1914, as the store celebrates its fifth anniversary. Many employees have moved up the promotion ladder, some have moved on, Rose has moved out, loose ends of love affairs get tied up, and the imminence of World War I affects everyone’s lives. The acclaimed cast includes Frances O’Connor, Aisling Loftus, Katherine Kelly, Gregory Fitoussi, Amanda Ab-bington and Tom Goodman-Hill. The series is based on Shopping, Seduction & Mr. Selfridge by Lindy Woodhead.

Get in the mood for the new season with Masterpiece Sneak preview: Mr. Selfridge Season �. This special includes a recap of Season 1 and the first 40 minutes of the Season 2 premiere episode. Look for it Sunday, March 9 at 8 p.m.

Local Spotlight

& The Doc in in! Thanks to all you enthusi-astic fans who called in your support, Doc Martin is returning to WTVP! We’ll start with season 6, picking up the storyline where we left off on Feb. 15. Then we’ll continue with as much of a series encore as we can (contract negotiations are underway now). We’ll announce tune-in dates as we know them online at wtvp.org, Facebook and Twitter, and in the April Guide. While you’re waiting, be sure to enjoy an encore of Doc Martin: Revealed—a behind the scenes look at the making of Season 6—on Saturday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 9 at 9 p.m.

Hey, we’re EVERYWHERE! Just over the past few weeks, our mo-bile satellite truck has been from Green Bay, WI to Wichita, KS and points in between doing uplinks for clients. Our production staff has been on remotes in Springfield and Peoria (on the same day) and many back-to-back productions in our own studio for new and on-going series. And things aren’t quieting down, either. Already on the books are remotes in Normal and Springfield, two live broadcasts with WILL-TV, and many trips for the Sat Truck. WTVP…we’re working hard for you!

& WTVp extends our heartfelt condo-lences to the family and many friends of Enid Miller. Before retiring from WTVP, Enid was our Development Assistant. Viewers will remember her as the wonderful voice on the phone who talked them through the digital transi-tion and helped with programming and membership questions. Everyone who knew her will remember her as the great friend with fire in her belly and gold in her heart. Enid died on Jan. 24, and we miss her greatly.

4March 15 & March 16—Taste of ireland Chef Kevin Dundon invites us into his kitchen for a sampling of Irish food made with a new, fresh ap-proach. Taste everything from appetizers to dessert in this marathon while Kevin also treats you to historic and cultural anecdotes about the country he loves!

4March 22 & March 23—Girly Girl Join Georgia Bonesteel, Donna Dewberry and Vicki Payne for this crafty marathon featuring items that a little girl would adore. Donations AcceptedThe WTVP Auction is only possible through charitable donations. And we’re not just talking about the items up for bid. Plenty of goods and services are necessary to run the Auction so there are many ways to get involved.

Sound BitesWhat happens when you take the music out of the concert hall and bring it to a more personal space…like your own living room? You get Sound Bites, a new concert series from Peo-ria Symphony Orchestra produced by WTVP. Taped live in the WTVP Studio in front of a small audience, the concerts feature the players and guest artists of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and are hosted by Maestro George Stelluto.

The series kicks off with Refined Revolutionaries. The concert stars violinist Charles Yang, with PSO musicians Katherine Lewis on viola, Adriana LaRosa Ransom on cello, and Jasmin Arakawa on piano. The quartet performs a program of Beethoven, Schumann and classical arrangements of popular hits (such as The Eagles “Hotel California”) by Armand Ranjbaran.

An accomplished classical musician, Yang has the soul of a rock star and the showmanship to match. Having turned down a pop music contract in favor of his studies at Julliard, Yang infuses his music—and his audience and fellow players—with energy, passion and a desire to hear more. Interviews clips with Yang are inter-woven throughout the concert.

Sound Bites premieres Friday, March �8 at 9 p.m., after Live from Lincoln Center, as part of WTVP’s Friday Arts Showcase. The concert series is generously underwritten by Sid and Flo Banwart.
