EARTH A New WildNature as never before! EARTH A New Wild takes a fresh look at humankind’s relationship to the planet’s wildest places and most fascinating species. This ambitious new five-part series will premiere Wednesday, Feb. 4 with back-to-back episodes—“Home,” followed by “Plains,”—beginning at 8 p.m. The following episodes will air each subsequent Wednesday through Feb. 25 at 9 p.m.
Produced by National Geographic Television in association with Passion Planet, the series is hosted by Dr. M. Sanjayan, leading conservation scientist. He takes viewers on a stunning visual journey to explore how humans are inex-
tricably woven into every aspect of the planet’s natural systems. With 45 shoots to 29 different countries, the series features spectacular natural history footage from the most striking places on Earth, filming encounters between wild animals and the people who live and work with them. With up-close looks at a range of species—from giant pandas to humpback whales and African lions to Arctic reindeer—Sanjayan reveals that co-habitations with animals can work… and be mutually beneficial.
“Earth has entered a new epoch and we are now living on a planet where our impacts are felt everywhere”
says Sanjayan. “This series is a first for nature films; it acknowledges that spectacular na-ture doesn’t exist in isolation, that humans are part of the picture.”

Will they find the missing art in time or will Cookie Monster be banished from the museum forever?

Notes from the President & cEoCelebrating independent points of viewTelling the unique stories of diverse races and cultures is just one of the places where public media excels.
We reflect this truth every month of the year, though it emerges even more clearly during February’s Black History Month. After all, no other media entity brings you programs that explore the gamut of the African American experience—from the insight of award-winning performers and writers to a landmark study of race and inequality, to the power of photography in sharing a collective history.
Two of these programs (Through a Lens Darkly and American Denial) are from Independent Lens, produced by Independent Television Service (ITVS), one of our most important media partners. I had the privilege of serving on the ITVS board of directors for eight years; it was incredibly gratifying to play a part in bringing the perspectives of independent filmmakers to public television viewers.
Thank you for your interest in all that ways that public media and the WTVP stations enhance the quality of life across central Illinois.
Moss Bresnahan, President & CEO WTVP

Doc martin 6 ReturnsPortwenn is buzzing with arrange-ments for the wedding of the Doc and Louisa. Will they finally tie the knot, or will the villagers have to put the confetti back in the box again? Relive the fun as WTVP begins an encore of Doc martin Season 6, Saturdays at 9 p.m. beginning Feb. 7. (Season 7 is still just a rumor, but keep your fingers crossed!)
See “Port Wenn” in person! We’ll be spending a day in Port Isaac, the filming site for the exteriors of Doc Martin, on our tour of the southwest coast of England. Find out more at our Travel Night event, Monday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. in the WTVP Studio. All are welcome.

Black History monthLook to WTVP and WTVP World for programming that explores and celebrates the African American experience from very different angles. Highlights during Black History Month include:
independent lens “Through a lens Darkly” monday, Feb. 16, 9-10:30 p.m.
This is the story of the pioneering African-American photographers — men and women, celebrated and anonymous — who have recorded the lives and aspira-tions of generations, from slavery to the present. A film by Thomas Allen Harris.
American masters “August Wilson: The Ground on Which i Stand” Friday, Feb. 20, 8-9:30 p.m.
From his roots as an activist and poet to his indelible mark on Broadway, this program captures the legacy of the man some call America’s Shakespeare. This film tells of his journey to the Great White Way, and the triumphs and struggles along the path to his seminal and Pulitzer Prize-winning works before his untimely death in 2005. Directed by Emmy-winner Samuel Pollard.
An Evening with Gwen ifill Friday, Feb. 20 from 9:30-10:30 p.m.
Gwen Ifill is one of the most prolific journalists of our time. In this one-on-one interview, taped in the historic Coolidge Auditorium of the Library of Congress’ Thomas Jefferson Building, Gwen’s friend and fellow journalist Michele Nor-ris turns the tables on the long-time host, giving an insider’s perspective into Gwen’s childhood and development as a print and television correspondent.
independent lens “American Denial” monday, Feb. 23, 9-10 p.m.
This film by Llewellyn Smith uses the story of Gunnar Myrdal’s 1944 investigation of Jim Crow racism as a springboard to explore the power of unconscious biases and how the ideals of liberty, equality and justice still affect notions of race and class today.
Walter Williams: Suffer No Fools monday, Feb. 23, 10 p.m.
This is a portrait of the iconoclastic African American author, educator and syndicated columnist, whose views on race and economics have made him one of the nation’s most original, provocative and often controversial voices. Fearlessly outspoken, Williams uses economics as an analytical tool to challenge conventional wisdom on everything from affirmative action to the minimum wage, from the value of occupational and business licenses to the negative effects of government assistance programs on black families.
Genealogy Roadshow, Antiques Roadshow and Shakespeare Uncovered build on the celebration with fascinating features on history, personal discovery, art and artists. And look to WTVP continuing series for local perspectives and voices on air and online at wtvp.org. Archived episodes include At Issue #2714, “Community Relations: Citizens’ Perspective”.

The Tameness of a Wolf
The italian AmericansUnlike other immigrant groups, many Italians did not come to Amer-ica to stay. At the turn of the 20th century, most came to work, earn money to support their families, and eventually return home. For those that made America home, their struggle to maintain a distinct Italian culture was guided by remarkably powerful ideals of family that had al-ways been at the center of their lives. In the Italian family, the needs of the collective came before the individual — a value system often at odds with American ideals of freedom and personal choice. While the power of the Italian family became a source of strength, it also bred suspicion, popularized in popular media as a dark, criminal element. This clash of culture echoed through generations of Italian Americans and, as they entered positions of political, social and cultural influence, it has left its mark on the American landscape.
The italian Americans, a new two-part, four-hour documentary series airing Tuesday, Feb. 17 & 24 from 8-10 p.m., explores the unique and distinctive qualities of one immigrant group’s experience, and how these qualities, over time, have shaped and challenged America. Through extensive archival materials and interviews with scholars and notable Italian Americans—such as Tony Bennett, Dion DiMucci, David Chase, Gay Talese, John Turturro and narrator Stanley Tucci—the series strips away the stereotypes about Italian Americans to reveal a complicated and rich narrative, little understood by most Americans.

la Dolce VitaDawning in the dark aftermath of World War II, the fertile mid-century decades of Italian cinema delighted international movie audiences with an eclectic mix of movie classics from groundbreak-ing directors including Frederico Fellini, Franco Zeffirelli, Sergio Leone and others. And a major component of Italian cinema’s enduring popularity continues to be a lush selection of sweeping film scores by composers like Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone.
Featuring Josh Groban, Renée Fleming and Joshua Bell, Great Performances partners with the New York Philharmonic and music director Alan Gilbert for a roman-tic concert of audience favorites with music from 8½, Amarcord, Once Upon a Time in the West, Cinema Paradiso, Life Is Beautiful, Il Postino and more.
Great Performances “la Dolce Vita: The music of italian cinema with the New york Philharmonic” airs Friday, Feb. 27 at 8 p.m.
Presented in collaboration with Sugarmusic, the concert – taped in September -- includes video projec-tion combining animated graphics and film clips designed by visual artist Giuseppe Ragazzini, under the direction of Giampiero Solari, and historical footage from Istituto Luce Cinecittà.

Sound Bites: marcia and FriendsGet a taste of beautiful music right in your living room with a third helping of Sound Bites. “marcia and Friends” stars Peoria Sympho-ny Orchestra Concertmaster Marcia Henry Liebenow in performance with the Concordia String Trio. Featuring Marcia on violin, Leslie Perna on viola, and Karen Becker on cello, the trio treats you to an intimate selection of chamber music from Franz Schubert, Jean Cras, Ernst Naumann and Gordon Jacob. Between pieces, Marcia shares insights on how the connections artists have with their communities ripple through their music—and how their art can influence their community. The program premieres Friday, Feb. 27 at 9:30 p.m.
Sound Bites is a collaboration between the Peoria Symphony and WTVP and is designed to extend the cultural impact and presence of the arts beyond the stage. The series is hosted by PSO Artistic Direc-tor George Stelluto and generously underwritten by Sid and Flo Banwart.

Thank you for helping us start 2015 off right!WTVP is very grateful to everyone who pledged during the December membership drive and who answered the call for year-end contributions. Thanks to you, we have strong expectations for this new year.A special thank you to our volunteers throughout 2014. The gift of your time is ap-preciated and, we hope, makes you feel more connected to what we do.
Here’s to 2015 – a year of great programming and prosperity for all!
WTVP Endowment FundThank you to those who are generously helping WTVP save for a rainy day. The station’s Endowment Fund continues to thrive thanks to the following caring individu-als, listed below. WTVP would also like to give our enduring gratitude to the local family, who asks to remain anonymous, who matches the first $10,000 raised each year for our Endowment Fund. This family started WTVP’s Endowment Fund 30 years ago, and their foresight has helped the station through good times and bad.
Though the station solicits for our Endowment Fund just once a year, donations are welcome throughout the year. You can specify an additional gift when you renew your membership or visit our website at wtvp.org anytime to make a gift. Thank you.

The comedian Gallagher (yes, the guy who smashed watermelons) used to tell a joke about how it would be nice to be able to turn up the intelligence on your television. But the truth is that while we seem to have ever more channel choices, it is becoming ever harder to find programming that al-lows us to turn up the intelligence. But the one place that maintains that commitment is public television and in our community, that is WTVP. While offering a wide array of programming, the commitment to quality never waivers. From the PBS NewsHour to This Old House, Downton Abbey to Red Green, NOVA to Sesame Street, WTVP brings the world into our homes… and raises our intelligence. As we know that member support is a critical piece of WTVP’s funding, we are proud to support WTVP as sustaining Klystron members. Being a sustaining member couldn’t be easier, as your contribution will automati-cally be debited from your account on a monthly basis. So won’t you consider joining us to ensure the future of intelligent programming for our community?
—Jerry & Laura Kolb

Best-selling author Jessica Fellowes, left, with Jerry and Laura Kolb. Fellowes, the niece of Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, was WTVP’s special guest at one of the station’s many Downton Abbey-themed events. She is the author of three Downton Abbey books.
