Permits

• All sewage treatment plants must have a NPDES permit.• Plants that discharge 50,000 GPD or less may apply for a

general permit which is easier and cheaper.• Home Aeration Units for residences or small businesses

with discharges of less than 600 GPD can apply for a general permit.

NPS

• Requirements: Streams listed as impaired for fecals in

watersheds with a TMDL. A watershed based plan for restoring the water

quality uses. Not to fund or partially fund any installation,

upgrade or extension of a permitted treatment system.

• A 40% non-federal match to the total project cost.

Lincoln County EPA Alternative Wastewater

Demonstration Project

• Project Location - Left Fork watershed of Mud River

• Needs assessment- Overview high coliform and e. coli levels throughout the watershed, very low income community.

• Funding sources -$1,284,933 (EPA $963,700. Local match $321,233)

• Devils Fork - Wastewater treatment for 68 homes in the subwatershed

• Project location – Devils Fork, headwaters of Upper Guyandotte, downstream to mouth of Pinnacle Creek

• Needs assessment – TMDL and a Watershed Based Plan
