Our tutors offer students the benefit of their own industry experiences, while also encompassing the knowledge and experience of the students in class.

The open approach to learning at the college allows students to understand how the topic or unit they are studying relates not just to their personal working environment but also the working environment of their peers.

Industry specialistsIn addition to our dedicated team of tutors, we also have close links with a number of employers and organisations who share their own industry experience with students and work with us to deliver workshops and presentations.These employer relationships have been developed over a number of years by our staff to ensure that the information and knowledge shared with students is directly relevant to their chosen course of study.

Learning Resource CentreEach college campus is equipped with a Learning Resource Centre which is managed by a dedicated team of staff who are on hand to offer advice and guidance on how to access a broad choice of learning support materials available, including: textbooks, full text academic journals, e-books, e-journals and databases of subject specific resources. Also on offer are a selection of PCs and Apple Macs. Plus, students have the opportunity to borrow laptops from the Learning Resource Centre team. The learning environment at both the Warrington and Winsford campuses is bright and spacious, providing the ideal setting for independent study and team-working projects.

Higher Education Awards Ceremony

In November each year, we honour our Higher Education and Professional students at our Higher Education Awards Ceremony.

Set in the magnificent surroundings of St Elphin’s Church, Warrington, the ceremony recognises the determination and commitment of students who have completed HNCs, HNDs and teacher training, as well as higher level apprenticeships and professional qualifications.

Shannen first attended the college on a year 11 taster day in 2015 and has since achieved a level 3 and a HNC in Performing Arts. She’s currently studying towards a HND and hopes to complete a top-up year at university, followed by a PGCE in secondary education. Her dream is to one day open her own dance school. Shannen said: “Since day one I have loved studying at Warrington & Vale Royal College. The tutors and facilities are brilliant and I have met so many nice people throughout my time here. Time to Shine - Meet our Students

Mike initially enrolled at the college to re-sit his GCSE English and maths. He enjoyed his time at the college so much that he decided to stay and pursue a HNC in Sport Science. After successfully completing the HNC, he enrolled onto a HND and has not looked back since! Mike said: “The college is on my doorstep and the course fits in with my busy lifestyle. I work, am a father and have suffered will a long term illness, but the tutors are extremely flexible, helpful and understanding. I don’t think you’d get that level of support at university. The units are really interesting, topical and in line with modern sports and fitness techniques.”In the future Mike hopes to progress to university to do a top-up degree in Sport Science followed by a PGCE. Kieran enrolled at Warrington & Vale Royal College as a self-employed joiner wanting to progress in his career and enhance his opportunities. Currently in his second year at college, Kieran admits that at times he has found returning to education challenging, but claims the support and guidance from his tutor has really helped. Kieran said: “It’s great that a local college provides courses such as the HNC Construction & Built Environment. Louise Marigold enrolled on the Access to HE - Health Professionals course after deciding that it was ‘her time’ to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a midwife. She then progressed onto the HNC & HND in Healthcare Practice. Following completion of the HND, she was offered a place to study for a BA (Hons) in Midwifery at Liverpool John Moores University. Louise is currently in her final year at university and says the Access to HE, HNC & HND really helped prepare her for further study. Louise said: “The best thing about studying higher education at Warrington & Vale Royal College is the tutors. They’re incredibly supportive, take the time to understand you as an individual and really want the best for you. There were times when I doubted myself and my ambitions but my tutors never let me give up.”

James progressed onto the HNC from a level 3 course, choosing to study higher education at Warrington & Vale Royal College over university. He credits this to the comfortable environment and the support he receives from his tutors. James said: “I love the course and am really looking forward to the more practical units. I hope to progress onto a HND and then a top-up year at university. Perhaps in the future I’ll undertake a Master’s degree! In the meantime, I’m exploring my options and trying to get as much experience in the media industry as possible.”

Deborah O’Brien is currently enrolled on a HNC in Fine Art and dreams of becoming a professional artist or art tutor of students with additional learning needs. Deborah was originally offered a place to study at university but chose the college because of the smaller class size and more personal teaching approach. It’s a professional environment but at the same time I feel comfortable and supported. Poppy is thoroughly enjoying her course and hopes to progress onto a higher apprenticeship within e-commerce. Poppy enrolled at the college on Level 2 Computing & IT and has since progressed on to a HND with the same tutors. She believes having the same tutors throughout her learning journey has really helped as they take the time to understand you as an individual and your preferred style of learning. Poppy said: “The units on the course are really interesting and varied and the tutors are very supportive. They’ve helped me to develop the skills and mind-set I’ll need to progress into the industry.”

Having previously studied plumbing at another college, Lewis enrolled on the HNC Construction & The Built Environment course to make himself stand out to employers. Since embarking upon the course, Lewis has secured a full-time role as a Trainee Estimator at Countryside Properties. Lewis said: “The course is challenging but I have the full support of the tutors behind me. Every lesson I’m learning something new about the construction industry and how to excel in a working environment. Codi was originally hesitant about enrolling at college but thanks to the support of his fellow classmates and tutors, he has overcome his initial fears and is thriving! Codi has struggled with his mental health but since enrolling on the course he claims he is the happiest he has ever been. Codi said: “I’ve met so many amazing people who have helped me to discover my true self. The course is extremely professional and teaches you the skills you need to work within the performing arts industry. I can’t recommend it enough.” In the future Codi hopes to continue his studies at Warrington & Vale Royal College and is even considering university. Our Learner Services team can provide you with advice on the cost of studying and the many support funds that you can access to help with costs.

Higher Education Finance

All of our HNC/HND programmes are eligible for a higher education loan, which you only start to repay once you are earning over £25,725 a year.

Tuition fee loansEligible students studying their first full-time or part-time undergraduate course can apply for a tuition fee loan; this will cover the cost of the course and is paid directly to the college.

Maintenance loansUp to £9,203 per year is available for students living away from home. Up to £7,747 per year is available for students living with their parents.

Repaying your loanWhen you are earning over £25,725 a year you will pay 9% of your earnings over this amount.

Support for Students

We pride ourselves on the excellent, individual support we provide for all students including those enrolled on a higher education programme of study or a professional course.

When you apply to the college you will be given the opportunity to declare a learning difficulty or disability. Our Learning Support team will arrange to meet you and assess your support needs.

Disabled Students’ AllowanceLearning support for higher education students is funded through the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). Our Learning Support team are happy to assist you in applying for DSA, including liaising with suppliers and/or external support agencies on your behalf.Disabled Students’ Allowance is available if you have a mental health problem, a long-term illness or any other disability. You can get the allowance on top of your other student finance and you will not be required to re-pay your DSA.

Study skills Higher education students without a DSA can access 1:1 study support provision where Learning Support staff can assist with research and referencing techniques, assignment support, organisation & time management tools and assistive software. In addition to study support, a screener is available to identify students with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia. Our specialist support staff can conduct the screener for students and then discuss the next step. Full diagnostic assessments for specific learning difficulties are available for students who are progressing internally or current higher education and professional students. A contributory fee is attached to a full diagnostic assessment for new higher education students. The college has a range of assistive software in order to help students with their studies. The college has a site licence for claroread, which is a multi-sensory tool bar that supports literacy and reading, and has a host of features including read out loud, spelling/homophone checker, coloured filters/overlays, prediction, mind mapping and speaking calculator.

The application process explained…

1. Submit your application for the course you wish to studyIf applying for a higher education programme, you can apply for a student loan from Student Finance England (SFE) without a confirmed offer from the college. Applications for 2020/21 entry open:• Full-time - February 2020• Part-time - May 2020

2. Attend an admissions interviewSome courses may require a pre-entry assessment. Any requirement to undertake an assessment will be communicated when invited for interview.

3.ConfirmationofanofferYou will receive written confirmation of your offer detailing any conditions.If your offer is unconditional it has been made on the basis of the academic qualifications presented to the college either on your application or at interview. You must provide documentary evidence of the qualifications on which the decision to offer a place has been based.If your offer is conditional you must meet the conditions set out on your offer.

4. EnrolmentYou will be invited in to college to enrol mid-July onwards.If the course you have been offered is eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan you will be sent information on how to apply for the loan with your enrolment letter.The college can enrol you on to the course as soon as you have received an acknowledgement email which confirmed you have applied for the loan.

Accredited Prior LearningMature students who have extensive work experience and / or professional qualifications in a related industry are welcome to apply. The college may give credit for previous certificated learning or relevant experience and this may be used to contribute to the credits for the new qualification; this is referred to as Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) or Experiential Learning (APEL). The programme leader will advise on the nature of the evidence that will be required to support any claim for the accreditation of prior learning / experiential learning.

This course has been designed to prepare adults for progression on to courses that will lead to university. If you have not studied for some time or do not meet the entry requirements for direct entry on to one of our level 3 courses, this course is ideal for you.

What will I learn?You will study a variety of modules developing personal skills and some academic units depending upon the course you are looking to study at university:• Research skills for academic study• Presentation software• Word processing software• Human physiology• Criminology• Sociology• Psychology• The role of the social care worker• Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.There are dedicated adult English and maths courses available to prepare you for GCSE study if necessary.

What are the entry requirements?There are no formal entry requirements to study this course.

How will I be assessed?You will be assessed during the course as each unit is taught and completed. A variety of methods will be used such as essays, presentations, research projects and exams.

Are there links with industry? The tutors on the course have excellent links with industry professionals, and students will benefit from these working partnerships.

What can I do after the course? Access to HE - Art & DesignLevel 3 / Full-time / Part-time • Warrington

On this exciting, innovative course you can let your creative juices flow and express your imagination through a range of artistic disciplines. You will be introduced to a broad range of art and design mediums, allowing you to develop your creative and technical skills. This course is ideal if you wish to progress on to higher education and employment within a creative field.

What will I learn?You will study a wide art and design curriculum which will include drawing and painting, printmaking, textiles, sculpture, life drawing, digital manipulation and contextual studies. You will generate a portfolio of artwork which will allow you to progress onto higher education whilst being supported with all aspects of the UCAS application process.

What are the entry requirements?Most universities require GCSE in English Language and/or GCSE Maths at 4/C or above, in addition to the Access to HE Diploma, in order to be eligible to apply for certain degrees. You are therefore advised to research your intended degree and the universities you intend to apply to, in order to confirm their specific entry requirements. For this reason, you will be required to have a minimum of GCSE English Language or maths at 4/C or above for entry onto the Access to HE course. Adults who do not have the pre-requisite entry qualifications are welcome to apply. The admissions tutor will use your initial assessment results to ascertain whether this is the right course for you.

How will I be assessed?You will be assessed during the course as each unit is taught and completed. A variety of methods will be used such as assessment of workshop outcomes, supporting contextual research, presentations, and assessments of collaborative group tasks, independent projects and group critiques. You will conclude the course with an end of year art and design exhibition.

Are there links with industry?You will be encouraged to attend galleries and museums to view the work of other practitioners, in order to enrich your work. There will also be guest speakers / artists who deliver talks around developing professional practice, networking, setting up a business and developing a personal style.

What can I do after the course?Access to Higher Education Diplomas are recognised by all universities for most degree subjects. Warrington & Vale Royal College offers highly popular and successful HNC/HND programmes in Fine Art and Applied Arts which provides an internal pathway, allowing students to progress onto level 4 and 5 study, with the option of a top up to level 6 at university after their study at college.

What will I learn?You will study a variety of units such as preparing final accounts for limited companies, accounting systems and control, management accounting skills relating to budgeting and performance evaluation. FeesTuition fees relate to a single academic year only. Students undertaking courses of more than one year duration will be required to pay further fees at the start of each academic year.
