Our Mission Statement
Our Mission is to promote spiritual
growth - Building a community of
faith and making disciples of Christ
by reaching out with compassion,
forgiveness and love. At West LA
UMC, building a community of faith is
what we are about.
And the curtain was torn
Holy Week is the most sacred time in the Christian year as we
witness Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, last supper with his
disciples, agonizing prayers in the garden, betrayal, trials, and
crucifixion before his miraculous resurrection on Easter morning.
During the 9:30 worship service on Palm Sunday, April 9, four
persons will present a dramatic reading of these significant events in
Jesus’ final days. Although much of the story is riddled with pain
and sadness, there is one, seemingly odd, line that offers listeners
tremendous hope. It is…
“And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”
You see, the holy temple in Jerusalem was divided into three
chambers: a large courtyard where ordinary people could enter, an
indoor lobby where only priests could enter and, finally, the Holy
Room where only the High Priest could enter. The Holy Room
contained the sacred ark of the covenant and was separated from the
indoor lobby by a huge, thick curtain, perhaps as high as 60’. Once
each year, the High Priest would pass through the curtain into the
Holy Room to enter into God’s presence to make a sacrifice on
behalf of all of the people’s sins.
Scripture describes that at the moment that Jesus died on the cross,
the temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom. The huge
curtain that blocked people’s direct access to God’s presence was
torn open! By tearing through that barrier, everyone now has access
to God’s grace and mercy!
Similarly, we no longer need anyone to sacrifice to God on our
behalf. Jesus’ death on the cross was sufficient for us to ask God to
be forgiven our sins.
Finally, the symbol of the curtain being torn from top to bottom is
understood to mean that God ripped the curtain, not humans. God
initiated the opportunity for all people to enter into God’s holy
presence. Everyone can come directly to God, not just a chosen few.
As you listen to the passion story unfold, listen for this important
line because it encapsulates God’s amazing grace and open embrace
to all people to enter into God’s holy presence.
See you in Church,
Rev. Janet

Ohana: Families with Young Children Saturday, April 8, 10:00 AM
Families with young children are invited to the April Ohana gathering to hear the father/daughter team of George Kikuta and Susanne (Kikuta) Nagata share their personal passions and learn from their expertise.
George and Keiko Kikuta have been active members of WLAUMC for over 35 years. George was born in Los Angeles and then moved to Japan from Manzanar/Tulelake in 1945. He returned to LA in 1959. His professional career was as CPA at an international accounting and consulting firm. After retirement, he worked as a consultant for ten more years. George took up Tai Chi practice at age 66 to rebuild his aging body. In 2011, he started twice-weekly Tai Chi class for church members and their friends. George will talk about his Tai Chi practice and lead the adults in a Tai Chi exercise.
Susanne Nagata was raised at WLAUMC, participated in the youth group, and joined the church in 2016. She received her BA in History from UC Berkeley. Susanne is a second grade school teacher and one of the teachers in our 3-4 year-old Sunday School Class. She is married to Ryan Nagata and they have a three-year-old daughter, Penny. Susanne will talk about teaching empathy and lead a discussion.
The day includes a lesson and playtime for children, and a potluck lunch. This month, please RSVP to Rev. Janet Cromwell by April 2 so that childcare can be arranged.

Friday, April 28, 7:30 PM Sanctuary
Filmmaker, Shonobu Yagushi’s award-winning latest comedy “Wood Job!” takes us into the world of Japan’s Agricultural and Forestry Service. “Wood Job!” is a good-natured, feel-good tale about a geeky city boy who enrolls in a forestry program after failing his university entrance exams and being dumped by his girlfriend. Aside from the comedy fare and scenery of Japan’s Mie Prefecture, the film expresses an appreciation for a rural way of life, respect for nature and responsible management of Japan’s resources.
Japanese Film Night is free and open to the public. Please gather your family and friends and come.

Happy Birthday Rev. Becky!
Rev. Becky did not eat the entire cake herself.
Twice this year, we were already told to be very careful of traveling overseas by Japanese Embassy. (Japanese government provides warnings for Issei immigrants in timely manner). We understood the serious problem that immigrants are facing now.
About 10 years ago, Yoshi and I moved from Kyoto, Japan. I still remember it took 5 years until we really could call LA home. It was not easy to adjust. Probably, the struggles of immigrants are not limited to the language problem & the cultural differences. We constantly experience many challenging moments being socially and economically weak. Often, we were reminded of our humble status by people or circumstances. So, daily, I, as an immigrant, learned to depend on God’s mercy and grace. But, I am lucky. My Father is Big! “Blessed are all who take refuge in him” (Psalm 2:12). The Lord is my refugees in trouble.
He is my hiding place in sorrow. He is my healer in stress. He is my shield from criticism and saves me. Because He protects me, I could live as an immigrant daily.
As the Easter celebration approaches, I am grateful that we worship the Risen Christ who takes away all our sins. Even though we are weak and poor, He is strong and rich!
