Today we will…

• Examine the growing role of women in some aspects of British society.

• Analyse the impact of WWI on the campaign for women’s suffrage.

Success criteria

• I will describe a rent strike.

• I will explain the role women played during WWI.

• I will evaluate the impact of women’s actions during WWI upon the women’s suffrage movement.

Thinking Task

• As we learned earlier in the year, WWI had a massive impact on the lives of women.

• In your group make a list of all the ways WWI affected women’s lives. (Hint: think about the changes during WWI spider diagram we made earlier e.g. fewer men)

Suffrage and WWI

• When WWI was announced women decided to support the country.

• They put their protest activities on hold and helped with the war effort at home.

Think-Pair-Share

• Individually, come up with a list of jobs women did during WWI.

• Now compare your answers with your partner and add any jobs they have which you missed.

• Now share your answers with the rest of your group.

Women in Society• Women’s contribution to the war effort

wasn’t the only way in which women became more prominent in society.

• During the war there was a major shortage of housing.

• Some landlords took advantage of this by increasing the rents. This is called PROFITEERING. Copy:

Profiteering = Taking advantage of a situation in order to make a profit.

Task• Listen to the clip of the

Rent Strikes

Task• For this task you will work in groups of three. Each

group will be given a set of three information cards about housing and everyone will be given a recording sheet for his or her own class jotter.

• Each member of the group should take responsibility for one card. It is each person’s responsibility to read his or her card carefully, before filling in the appropriate section of the recording sheet.

• You should then share your information with your group so that you all have a completed grid.

• You must then come to a decision as to whether or not women did have a big impact on society during the war. Be prepared to feedback to the class!

Growing influence• After the rent strikes, it became

clear that women would speak out about issues that affected them.

• The Rent Strikes showed that women had the power to make important changes

• Do you think this would help or hinder the campaign for women to get the vote? Give reasons for your answer.
