PREP NEWS YR 1 NEWS

Welcome to week 6 of term 2, we are in the middle week of term!

We are learning:

English: In English, students will be reading Giraffe’s Can’t Dance and creating a character description of Gerald the Giraffe. This is their final practice before assessment next week. Maths: In Maths, students are learning subtraction strategies such as count back on a number line and using their rainbow facts and doubles facts to subtract.

General notices: Homework is sent home on Mondays. It includes some spelling/sight word practice, reading and maths and will be returned each Friday for marking. Home readers will be changed on Monday and Wednesday pending time and parent help. Please remind your child to form their letters correctly in preparation for the assessment next week. A friendly reminder that once the bell goes at 8.50am, learning time begins and students need to focus on their tasks. Please say goodbye outside of the classroom and encourage your child to independently unpack their belongings when the bell goes at 8.45am. We have seen a great improvement in the independence of our students by encouraging them to do it themselves. If you would like to stay after the bell, discuss with your child’s teacher to arrange some parent helper jobs within the room. If you need to talk to the teacher please see them before or after school or send an email as once the bell goes our duty of care is with the students.

Have a great week.

Mrs Griffin

Wow, we are halfway through the term! No more public holidays this term. As assessment time is fast approaching it is important that your child is attending school every day (unless they are sick). It is imperative that you are reading with your child every night. Do not forget to practice sight words every night. To help with the reading of sight words have children identify the words they are learning in their book before reading.

Don’t forget to bring back library books and bags on your child’s library day so that they can borrow a new book. If you are unsure of your child’s day check with their teacher.

Just a reminder that as the weather is getting cooler, as part of the uniform policy, jumpers must be the school jumper or a dark blue (don’t forget to NAME them). Also shoes must be black or white.

In English we are practicing our sentence writing to tell a story. We are focusing on making sure our sentences have the following elements: a capital letter at the start, full stop, finger spaces and that they make sense.

In Maths we are learning about patterns in our environment, making patterns and continuing patterns. We also continue to build our number knowledge.

Enjoy the rest of your week Kind regards,

Miss Nan

YR 2 NEWS YR 3 NEWS

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Year 3, week 6!

NAPLAN is over! Everyone in year 3 did an

amazing job.

This week will be a busy week for year 3, as there

will be assessment this week.

This week in English, we are continuing to look at

our narratives. Students will be writing and

completing their assessment task.

In Maths this week we will be looking at Multiplication. Working on different strategies in a fun and engaging way. Students will be working on concepts for their assessment. In Science students will be revisiting the concepts of the effects the sun has on the Earth, that they have learnt over the term. Students are getting ready for their creation of their science posters. Just a few friendly reminders: • Homework is handed out on Monday and

students are responsible for completing the work throughout the week and submitting on Friday. Homework includes daily reading, spelling and math problems.

• Mr Purdie

3A was lucky enough to be visited by Hunter.

English: We are continuing on with stereotypical and non-stereotypical Fairytales this week and practicing writing about which we prefer; using coordinating conjunctions. Science: This week the year two cohort are investigating changing incline of surfaces. The objective is to design a toy that moves with a push or pull. We will then need to describe a change to the toy and how it affects the toy’s movement. Lastly, to incorporate reading and comprehension we must pose an investigation question and make a prediction about an object’s movement. Maths: We are counting and comparing money by coordinating notes and coins to their values. We are working hard to remember that dollars and cents have different values despite their sizes. Especially, that $1.00 has the value of 100 cents! PBL: Conflict is a choice but disagreements are a part of life. This week our social skills lessons will focus on learning to solve problems and managing conflict so that we can be safe, respectful WoodLinks learners. Reminders Science — We require recyclable materials: small cardboard boxes, drink containers, drink lids, string and sticky tape. Please note for hygiene purposes, all plastic materials need to be pre-washed thoroughly before we can use it. Thank you again to our wonderful parent helpers who assist us with home readers—we greatly appreciate your time to help us succeed in reading.

YR 4 NEWS YR 6 NEWS

Year 6 students have been working hard on finishing their multi-modal advertisement this week. They are using descriptive and persuasive language to convince the reader to travel to an exotic, relaxing, or exciting holiday destination. Because it is a multi-modal advertisement, they need to choose appropriate images and add audio to match their ad. They have been enjoying creating these on the laptops. In Math, students have been looking at a range of angles and working finding unknown angles. Ask your child to explain supplementary or vertically opposite angles! In History this week, students are writing a news feature article explaining the significant contributions of Sir Henry Parkes to the Federation movement. Year 6 students are also looking forward to GALA Day activities that begin this week. If your child is a part of a GALA Day team, please ensure their permission notes are back to school on Thursday at the very latest. The Student Council have been busy this week organising a fundraiser to raise money for brain cancer research. We will be having a Free Dress day on Thursday 24th May. Please make sure your child wears safe and respectful attire on this day and brings a gold coin donation for this worthwhile cause.

Ms Brady 6A Teacher

Hello Parents and Guardians of Year 4, This Friday is our first gala day! Please make sure you have returned any notes with payment if your child has signed up for a team! We would love to see as many of our Year 4’s out there – especially my netballers! In English we are continuing our traditional stories unit – my class (4A) has become super amazing at identifying noun groups, verb groups, prepositional phrases, adverbs, and text connectives. I see great progress in their writing. We collectively did a story about a monster teacher, and some of the writing was absolutely fantastic. In HASS, we are learning about cultural, social, and religious groups – the students have been fantastically respectful in discussing these topics. We have discussed our participation in social groups, our culture and links to it. We’ve discussed our identity, and the many facets of it – getting to know ourselves better, as well as our fellow classmates. We’re getting into the second half of term now – fingers crossed the second half is as good as the first!

English This week in English we started our 2nd assessment. We are writing and publishing our own multi modal feature articles. In our article we need to share our opinion about flying foxes in residential areas. Our articles will be published using power point and book creator. We need to choose persuasive images that will support our arguments.

Maths In Maths this week we are revising symmetry. We used mirrors to make sure a shape was symmetrical. We practiced drawing lines of symmetry and enlarging shapes, as well as reducing shapes.

Gala Day Gala Days begin this week on Friday. Students will be participating in netball, soccer and rugby. “This is a good opportunity to have fun and get fit.” Amelia, year 5 student. We need to remind other students to wear a hat, and complete school uniform on Gala Days. Students that are not participating in Gala sport will be doing fun stuff with Ms Brady, Mr Vayo, and Ms Roberts.

NAPLAN NAPLAN was last week. We were tested on writing, language conventions, reading and numeracy. 5B teacher, Ms Wilson said “I am very proud of all the year 5’s as they put in a lot of effort.” We appreciate all the support and encouragement our teachers gave us. 5B student, Amelia says” I was so happy that we got pancakes before we did the test.”

ATTENDANCE

At WoodLinks SS we believe that attendance matters! By attending school everyday students have the very best opportunity to achieve success. Each week we monitor individual and class student attendance. We celebrate attendance every Monday at Assembly with the announcement of the previous week’s winners. In Prep-Year 2, classes are involved in a weekly horse race and in Years 3-6, students are involved in a superhero race (located outside the library). The WoodLinks Attendance Policy can be found on our website.

‘Every day counts’ is a state wide initiative that aims to assist in improving student attendance at school through a shared commitment by students, parents, caregivers, schools and the community. To do this, Every day counts promotes four key messages:

• all children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day

• schools should monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance

• truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices

• attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community.

Attendance target is 95% Recent WoodLinks data shows that the days with the lowest attendance rate are

Mondays and Fridays.

At WoodLinks we believe that ‘Every Day Counts’.
