Questions?
Slide 21
Biggest Mistakes Students Make What do you think is the biggest
mistake students make when reading the textbook?
Slide 22
Slide 23
I should read every word of the Text Fact vs. Fiction I should
read every word of the text.
Slide 24
Many of the words used in writing grammatically correct
sentences actually convey no meaning. Look for people, places,
dates, events, terms, court cases, laws, etc. Dont spend forever on
the individual words rather try piecing together ideas Look at the
BIG picture vs. the little one!
Slide 25
Fact vs. Fiction Reading once is enough.
Slide 26
Skim once to GET the main idea Reread more carefully to plug
the gaps in your knowledge.
Slide 27
Fact vs. Fiction Taking Notes is a waste of time.
Slide 28
Maybe the way YOU are taking notes IS a waste of time your but
dont discard the idea! Find what works for you! This is different
from student to student. What you are used to is not always the
best method!
Slide 29
Slide 30
No one method works for everyone. Sometimes it is a process of
trial and error to find what works for you. Knowing your learning
style can really help you to determine what is right for you! Give
3-DT a try! --Do you learn better by: doing, listening, seeing????
Im methere isnt a right way, only a right way for me
Slide 31
Just because there is not a right way doesnt mean there are not
bad ways! Try chunking your work. Reading loads of material at a
time will make you tired and forgetful. Schedule small breaks. This
will help you to digest the material and understand it better.
Cramming=BAD IDEACramming=BAD IDEA Ever catch yourself reading the
same words over and over again? Time for a break!
Slide 32

taking! Set targets 8. Set targets to work towards and break in-
between. Find a place 9. Find a place to read where you are not
easily distracted. Review 10. Review your readings on a regularly.
You cant run the marathon without training!
