Early 1990s: first residential school lawsuits

1996: Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples finds abuse “widespread” at residential schools

1997-2002: Over 10,000 litigation claims filed

2001: Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada created

2003: Alternative Dispute Resolution process created

2005–2006: Negotiations of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement

2007: Court approval for the Settlement Agreement

June 11, 2008: Prime Minister’s Apology

Out-of-court process to resolve claims of serious physical abuse, sexual abuse & other wrongful acts suffered at an Indian Residential School Separate from other parts of the Settlement Agreement

Replaced Alternative Dispute Resolution process
