Wyndmere Public School Issue 16, March 2018 1 The mission of Wyndmere Public School is to create an environment where students and staare safe, respectful, and responsible. The stais committed to ensure all students are proficient and will graduate with the necessary skills to thrive as 21st century learners, workers and citizens. WYNDMERE SCHOOL NEWS From the Superintendent Our school is not unlike most rural schools in North Dakota. It is an integral part of the community. When we have success, we all celebrate. When we have struggles or are in need, we more often than not have more help or contributions than we know what to do with. The support our families and school have had this past month from not only local but, outside sources, helps reinforce my opinion that living and working in a rural, smaller school setting has many positive intangibles that larger metropolitan areas are not able to replicate. Grieving, celebrating, laughing and crying, we grow together and support one another. Small schools, and small communities, do this best. The window for state assessment is coming up. A couple of changes are coming for this year in regards to our assessment. A new vendor is providing the assessment. We are unsure as to what this will, mean if anything. Who is tested and how are also changing somewhat. 11 graders will no longer be taking the state assessment. This has been lowered one grade to 10th grade. We also did paper/pencil tests in the elementary and this will no longer be an option with the new vendor. We are confident that our students will perform well. We continue to compile a list of projects to review for this summer. If you have suggestions, please contact Janet Bell, John Manstrom, or myself. Some of the projects we are looking at are sections of sidewalk to replace, additional storage loft in the cold storage building, bathroom remodel, and add/replace cabinet storage in the high school workroom. We have had a number of new students move, or petition into our school system. So much so that we will be splitting 3rd grade into two sections next year to better provide for our students. Splitting or combining a class is a decision that comes with a number of ramifications. The decision is not made quickly or off the cuff. This decision was unanimous that we have the resources and can better provide for all by doing so. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me during school hours. Elementary Endeavors

The first graders are once again trying to receive postcards from all 50 states. It's always exciting to receive the different postcards. Mrs. Tompkins has even received from some former students. That was great! We have not received any cards from the following states: Arkansas, Virginia, Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, N. Carolina, De laware , Connect icut , Rhode Is l and , Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont. We'd love help from any Wyndmere family, friends, alumni, etc.

As we enter March, we are starting to see a gradual warm-up, which has meant more recess time OUTSIDE!! The students have benefited from this and it helps to break up the days. Even though the temperature is going up, we will still require hats/gloves/snow pants until we see consistent higher temperatures and the snow melts.

This month will be the start of our North Dakota State Testing for grades 3-6. All tests have moved to an electronic format and schedules will be sent out once they are finalized. It is important that you take notice of when your student(s) test. A good night's sleep and a good breakfast can go a long way in helping them do their best!

The Wyndmere grade-level spelling bee winners participated in the Richland County Spelling Bee on February 21st. Local winners were: 5th - Emerson Johnson, 6th - Maria Morris, 7th - Cayden Smykowski, 8th - Johnny Gutzmer. Cayden will be competing at the state competition in Bismarck later this school year. All of our contestants did a great job!

March 7th marks the end of our 3rd Quarter. It is hard to believe we are entering the final push for the school year. Report cards will be sent out on Friday, March 9th. A "Sign-Return" letter will be attached and we ask that you have it returned as soon as you can. You may keep the report card.

The elementary boys will be starting their season and seem excited for the competition. Nathan Brandt will once again be coaching the team and we thank him for his willingness to do so. It has been fun watching the athletes grow in their skills during the Future Warbird Basketball Camps and we are excited to see them take their newfound knowledge of the game to the court.

It is wonderful getting to see the smiling faces of the students in the elementary school each and every day. I feel very grateful to work with such wonderful staff, students, and parents. Our students have a nice sense of community and family, which has been a blessing this past month. I am looking forward to a fantastic spring and ending the year on top of our game!

Counselor’s Corner Parents and students: Check out msorgaard.weebly.com or scan the QR code below for the latest scholarships in our area, ACT test information, and student opportunities. The website is the best place to start when you have questions, I work hard to keep information up to date and available for students in the district.

What to do in March? As soon as it is possible, it is wise to submit your FAFSA. If housing and meal plans haven’t been applied for, students need to submit that as soon as they are able. Students should look at the website of their college for school specific scholarships. Local scholarships are soon to be distributed, be sure to get those submitted to me by the deadline in order to be considered. All of the scholarships that come to me are posted on my website and can be accessed at any time. If you have questions about scholarships or financial aid, feel free to call or stop into the office and I will connect you with resources.

Statewide Testing: On March 20th all juniors in the state of ND will be taking either the ACT or the WorkKeys test. In order to prepare for the ACT test, I have provided resources on my website under the “Testing” tab. I love the app Play2Prep that students can download and get 20 free practice questions a day to increase their skills! Also, all students have access to the online study tool Testive.

Summer Opportunities! Many summer experiences available to middle and high school students have begun the application process. Governor’s school, Boys/Girls State, North Dakota Leadership Seminar, Rotary Youth Leadership Academy and many others are looking for interested students to participate. More information and various opportunities can be found on my website and on school bulletin boards.

Noteworthy News Honor Society Congratulations to the following students who were recently inducted into the ND Association of Honor Society: Jessica Kuchera, Laura Gutzmer, Cory Hulm, Kolten Mellem, Jolene Kuchera, and Casey Buskohl. Their Induction Ceremony and breakfast was held on Wednesday, Feb. 28 .

Battle of the Books The Battle of the Books begins for grades 5 & 6! Students will be reading from now until April 25 to complete a list of 10 Newbery Award winning books. This is the 28th year of competition at our school.

Mark your calendars for 2pm on Wednesday, April 28 to watch the excitement of the teams competing that afternoon in the school cafeteria.

Bunches of Blankets We would like to thank Project Linus, a non-profit organization that provides homemade blankets to comfort children during difficult times, for providing a blanket to each child in grades K-12. They wanted to blanket our school in hugs, which is exactly what our students needed after an emotional week.

On Friday, February 23rd the Wyndmere FFA chapter teamed up with CHI Home Health (Hospice) to tie 49 fleece blankets together. This project was put together by Zach Even. He, Anne Manstrom and Laiken David were the students who picked out all the fabric. Most of the high school came together that afternoon to tie all the blankets alongside the very appreciative nurses from CHI. The blankets we tied in one afternoon will last over 6 months for the hospice program!

How do I help my child

become a better reader?

If they are reading a Fiction book ask them….

Who are the main characters and what traits can you infer about them? How have the characters changed during the book? What questions do you have as you are reading? Is the story written in first or third person point of view? What is the author’s purpose? Persuade, Inform or Entertain? What is the problem in the story? How do you think it will be solved? What do you predict will happen next? Could the story happen in real life? How are you similar to the characters? How are you different? What is the theme of the book? What lesson did the characters learn? Write a summary of the story using Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then… What was your favorite part and why? Did you like the ending? If not, how would you change it? Write your own ending.

If they are reading a Non-Fiction book ask them….

What do you think you will learn from this book? What do you already know about this topic? What questions do you have as you are reading? What is the main idea of the text? What is the author’s purpose? Persuade, Inform or Entertain? What text features were used in this text? How did they help your understanding? What did you learn from this text? Do you have any questions after reading this? Were there any unknown words in this text? How did you find out their meaning? Where could you find more information on this topic? Write a summary of this text- remember to include the main idea and supporting details.

Help your child become a better writer by encouraging

them to write about what they read!
