IntroductionWelcome to our 2016 HiBird Gamecover and Environmental Crops brochure.

After a very cold spring and an early summer, most areas of gamecover seem to haveproduced some excellent crops, which benefited from some regular rainfall throughoutthe summer months!

In July, the new Countryside Stewardship scheme was launched with many optionsavailable to help support both farmland and reared birds.

Some of the options will help wildlife and nature by restoring habitats, providing foodand nesting resources for birds, as well as providing pollen and nectar sources wherethey are most needed.

Last year, we asked you to take part in our gamecover and environmental photographycompetition. After a tough decision, we are pleased to announce James Tallowin fromHickling in Norfolk as the winner – congratulations to James! His picture, featured on thefront cover of this years catalogue and also pictured right, showed a great mixture ofdifferent crops, including kale, phacelia and sandoval quinoa. The colours in the picturewere fantastic - we especially liked the contrast with the grey cloudy sky! Well doneJames! You can also see the runner up entries below and at the top of page 1.

SUNFLOWERS

Sunflowers have travelled the world since theirdiscovery in America, where native Americansdomesticated and bred the plant. Spanishboats crossed the Atlantic Ocean andchristened the plant Helianthus annus fromthe Greek “Helios” meaning sun.

It was used initially as an ornamental plantuntil an English inventor – Arthur Bunyandeveloped a method for extracting the oil fromthe seeds.

Sunflowers sown in April or early May can growquickly in warm weather; flowers begin to formin June and show colour by the end of July andAugust. Flowering lasts approximately 2-3weeks and seed use by farmland birds andgame can begin in early October.

GREENING

Basic Payment Scheme The Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) replaced the single payment schemeon 1st January 2015. Under the BPS, famers and landowners have tomeet the new ‘Greening rules’ to receive a greening payment.

The Greening Rules:

• The crop diversification rule

• Ecological focus area (EFA) rule

• The permanent grassland rule

Although many of the greening options are aimed at soil and waterimprovements, many of the options under the EFA rules can be highlybeneficial to wildlife and reared game.

Be careful though, as some of these options can only be counted onceand appear in both EFA and Countryside Stewardship scheme measures.

EFAs can be made up of these features and/or areas:

• Buffer strips • Catch crops

• Cover crops • Fallow land

• Hedges • Nitrogen-fixing crops

Buffer strips will create excellent nesting and foraging areas, and thesown catch and cover crop options will create both cover and feed byusing species such as autumn cereals, vetch, phacelia and mustard.

The new Countryside Stewardship will replaceEnvironmental Stewardship, the English Woodland Grantscheme and the capital grants from catchment sensitivefarming programme. Applications for the new schemestarted in July 2015 with agreements and paymentsbeginning in 2016.

The new scheme will be delivered by Natural England, theForestry Commission and the Rural Payments Agency. Thescheme has 3 main elements:

• Higher tier (similar to the current Higher LevelStewardship)

• Mid-tier (which replaces Entry Level Stewardship)

• Lower tier of capital grants

The higher tierFor the most environmentally important sites andwoodlands.

The mid tierOptions to address a wide range of environmental issues,including water pollution and improving the farmedenvironment for birds and pollinators.

The wild pollinator and farm wildlife packageWithin the two tiers, applicants can choose a specific groupof management options that will bring benefits to wildpollinators, farmland birds and other farm wildlife.

The options are as follows (also shown on pages 20-21):

• Pollen & nectar resources for pollinators and chick-foodfor birds

• Nesting sites for birds and pollinators

• Winter food for seed eating birds

Farmers who apply for this package of measures will scoremore highly in their Countryside Stewardship applications.

ScotlandIn Scotland, the Scottish Rural Development Programme(SRDP) will deliver pillar two of the European AgriculturalPolicy. The many options available also include the Agri-Environment Climate Scheme; which includes bothmanagement options for arable and grassland areas andincludes wild bird seed and forage brassica crops forfarmland birds plus grass strips and species rich grassland.

WalesGlastir is the sustainable land management scheme forWales. Further details can be found on the Welshgovernment website www.gov.wales

The Campaign for the Farmed Environment (CFE) is encouraging farmers andland managers across England to protect and enhance the environmental valueof farmland by taking up voluntary measures. CFE will help you choose the bestmeasure, select the right site and manage the area to maximise theenvironmental value. The provision of important food resources for farmland birds is vital inthe autumn and winter months and more specifically in the hungrygap period between winter and spring.

The new Countryside Stewardship Scheme has also launched a newoption to provide food resources for both farmland birds and a rangeof nectar feeding insects. This includes butterflies and bumblebees,with the option AB16 autumn sown Bumblebird Mixture.

Select a weed-free site of low fertility. Fertiliser should not be used,since broad-leaved and grass weeds, together with cultivated grassescontained in standard mixtures, can be highly competitive on fertilesoils. This can adversely affect seed germination, establishment andsubsequent growth. However, increased grass cutting can help tocounteract over-competitive growth.

Control weeds before sowing. Annual weeds may be hoed, buried orkilled with a contact herbicide. Perennial weeds should be eradicatedby a translocated glyphosate-based herbicide. Sow mixtures eitherfrom early March to early May, or from early August to mid-September.This will ensure optimum establishment of most species. Cultivatethe ground to provide a fine, weed-free seed bed. Firm if necessary.Take care to sow evenly, at the recommended rate. Thoroughly mixingone part seed with four parts dry sand makes it more easilydistributed. Rake the seed in lightly with a spring-tined rake and firmthe soil by treading or, preferably, rolling. This ensures that the seedcomes into contact with moisture in the soil. Water with a fine spray.This will avoid disturbing the surface of the soil. Keep the area well-watered and free from any unwanted plants. Cut the sward every sixto eight weeks during the first year after sowing and remove thecuttings. This will prevent the grass from over growing the slowergrowing wildflowers. In the following years, cut in early spring,before growth starts, and in October, after all wildflower seeds havebeen shed. Remove the cuttings.

WILDFLOWER SOWING GUIDE

We have carefully formulated ourwildflower mixtures to meet a numberof different habitats and soil types.This can range from a sandy soil to ahedgerow habitat. Low maintenancegrass species (see panel below) areincluded in the mixture to act as anurse crop in the early years ofestablishment and growth. The grasseshelp suppress weed invasion, whilstallowing the wildflowers to flourish. All our AWF mixturescontain 20% native British produced wildflowers and 80%grasses (see below for details).
