Out of This World ResumesWhether you are writing your first resume or updating an old one, you have

probably wondered how much difference it really makes in getting you the job.Well, a resume can say a lot about you, and not all of it is in words. Think ofyour resume as a word picture of yourself. Just as you would not show up foran interview in the same clothes you wore to hang out with friends, you shouldnot submit a resume that is badly organized or sloppy-looking. Since yourresume is likely the first thing a potential employer will see from you, it needs tobe a professional reflection of you and of your talents. Grammar is key, soproofread carefully.

Cover Letter: Include a cover letter with everyresume that you do not personallydeliver.Mention why you chose that companyand list your specific job qualifications. Try to write the letter to a specificperson in the company and do not forgetto thank that person for his or her time. Request an interview and indicatewhen you will be calling.

Gabrielle Edwards Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Happy Puppy Veterinary Clinic 15 Muddy River Road Torrington, Wyoming 82240

Dear Dr. Edwards,

I am writing to inquire about a summer position at your veterinary clinic.

I am currently a sophomore at Torrington High School, but would like to pursue a pre-veterinary degree at the University of Wyoming when I graduate. I gained experience with small animals by volunteering last summer at the Huntley Animal Shelter cleaning kennels and exercising the animals there.

I am familiar with your kenneling procedures and routine pet checkup visits, as my family has used your clinic for our dog, two cats, and several rabbits. I want to learn as much as I can fromyou and your colleagues. I am a hard worker and a fast learner.

My resume is enclosed for your review. I will contact your office next week to see if you are available to meet with me.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Sincerely,

Eric R. DanielsEric R. Daniels

Keep good records of who youtalked to and how they helped.Check back with your contactsperiodically. Let them knowwhen you find a job. Alwayssend a thank you note to anyonewilling to give you a hand.

- Networking

Why networking works...

Networking is not justfor company executives. The truth is...anyone can

network, even you!

Networking is one of thebest ways to find a job. Most employers onlyadvertise a job opening as alast resort. Before that, theyask current employees ifthey know of anyone lookingfor a job. If you have beennetworking, you may becalled to set up an interview.

The best part of networkingis how easy it can be.First, make a list of everyperson you know. Then, startcalling. Tell them you arelooking for a job and ask ifthey know of any openings inyour area of interest. If not,ask them to keep you in mindin case something comes up.

Only 20% of all job openings are advertised in thenewspapers or through employment agencies. That’s just a hint of what lies below the surface.

The other 80% are filled by referrals from employeesor others in the industry. Networking can identifyyou as a potential candidate.
