with markers taped to a visor on theirhead, or carefully moving ping pongballs to the correct place value. Even afaint clicking of the probability wheelcould be heard in the distance with ajump for joy when a coupon was won toa local kid-friendly establishment. “Wehave to thank the parents, the commu-nity, and our staff for embracing theidea!” both teachers agree. The founda-tion for the carnival was set last year byCarla D’Addesi, who created most of thegames that were used. Patricia Amin,Natalya Spadafora, and Jody Menonwent above and beyond to add theirown flair to the carnival this year. “Thestudents worked hard all year to masterthe 5th grade curriculum. The Carnivalis a fun way to test their knowledge!”agreed the teachers. Serafina France-Tribe had a message for the future 5thgraders, “You definitely want to domath carnival. It is a lot of fun!”

Carnival Tests Math Skills3

Children were seen playing on theWest Reading Playground on the lastday of May, but it was far from a typicalday on the playground. In fact, the stu-dents were working hard, putting theirmath skills to the test. It was the 2nd

annual Math Carnival for the fifthgraders at West Reading ElementaryCenter. Keith Arnold and Erika Homan, fifth grade math teachers at WREC,worked collectively with a parent com-mittee since November to bring thecarnival to life. There were 15 mathgames for the children to play. Eachstation was run by at least one parentand involved key math skills the stu-dents learned throughout the year.

At any given moment throughout theday, children were seen picking up fuzzydice with rulers to review multiplica-tion properties, converting fractions

“Say cheese!” The way to captureimages in the colonial days was notwith photography, according tofourth grade teacher ColleenPaulson. Wealthy colonists wouldsit for hours and have their por-traits painted. Others who couldnot afford this had to settle withhaving their silhouettes made.

For three days in April, fourthgrade students had a glimpse ofwhat life was like in colonial days.Participating in six different sta-tions, students made silhouettesand cornbread, practiced calligra-phy writing, colonial dancing, andweaving, played games, and experi-enced a one-room schoolhouse.

Gwen Gibson’s students were sur-prised to learn that meal time incolonial days was much differentthan today. Colonial childrenoften had to stand for the entiremeal and weren’t allowed to talk!Meals were very simple and consist-ed of a lot of corn. Most of thetime colonists ate with their fingersrather than utensils.

According to teacher NancyleeChaiko, “The fourth graders weresurprised to learn that the profes-sional weavers were men! Both theboys and girls were very proud ofthe bookmarks that they wove!”

Andrea Boerger said, “The high-light for me as a teacher was watch-ing the excitement on the chil-dren’s faces as they were learningabout colonial times. The costumesand activities really transportedthem back in time, and it madecolonial life and struggles comealive. The kids really loved it!”

Wyo 5 Live Club Seeks Needed UpgradesWyo 5 Live, founded in November of 1997, is a club thatprovides the Wyomissing Area Junior-Senior High Schoolwith closed circuit television announcements. The Wyo 5Live Club affords students an opportunity to announceand produce daily live broadcasts to the entire JSHS. Inaddition to creating a live broadcast experience, Wyo 5Live regularly airs supplemental video produced byMultimedia I, II, and III students.

Hundreds of Wyomissing Area JSHS students havereceived hands-on public speaking, technical and produc-tion experience, and dozens have moved forward with professional careers in the broadcasting industry.

Replacing aging hardware and upgrading the video signalby creating a web-based broadcast is essential. Plans

include purchasing two new high definition cameras and avideo switcher that would enable the broadcast signal tostream high definition video to the students. This upgradegives students a relevant broadcast experience.

Please consider helping current and future students by supporting this educational experience. All donations aregreatly appreciated!
