Himalayan Adventures 2013 In the summer of 2013 (official dates TBC), an expedition of 50 young people and adults from across the Explorer and Network sections of West Yorkshire Scouts will be taking part in an International Expedition to India. The "Himalayan Adventures" expedition will be a unique experience with both the sights and sounds of India including Delhi and the Taj Mahal but also taking a trek into the foothills of the Himalayas, taking in some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. A more detailed itinerary is currently being produced and will be released upon application to the expedition. We will be opening applications up for young people (Explorers and Network) to join the expedition from January 2012... look out for more information! The adult selection day for the India expedition has been moved to Sunday 29th of January to avoid clashing with the busy Christmas period and also give everyone who is interested in being part of the expedition a chance to get their application in, ask questions about it etc. The closing date for adult applications has now been extended until Saturday the 14th of January. A flyer is available (http://bit.ly/india2013) along with some frequently asked questions (http://bit.ly/india2013-leaderfaq) about the expedition and how to apply. Please note that the FAQ still show the original closing date. Details of how young people can apply for the expedition will be out in the New Year so look out for them! Using your own car for Scout

activities Motor insurance for transporting Scouts to and from events in your own vehicle is not covered by The Scout Association’s policies. Under United Kingdom law, the driver of a motor vehicle must hold suitable third party insurance (including indemnity to passengers), and the minimum levels of cover have to be provided by any motor insurer. As this is a statutory requirement, The Scout Association does not provide any cover to individuals in respect of their liability as car drivers, as this would be a pointless duplication of cover. Scouting is usually classified as a social, domestic or pleasure activity and, as such, would be covered by most motor policies. However some insurers might have conditions around volunteer driving, or might want you to contact them to let them know if you do volunteer. Information about using your own car for Scout activities can be found on the Unity - Scout Insurance Services - website (http://bit.ly/siJ0VD), and the Association of British Insurers - ABI - website (http://bit.ly/vc326l). You will need to check with your own motor insurers to see if volunteer driving is covered under your policy. The Scout Association’s Personal Accident and Medical Expenses policy will still cover members while being transported to and from Scouting activities. Occasional Helpers: a clarification Recently, we have received a number of questions about the difference between Occasional Helpers and other roles in Scouting, particularly Sectional Assistants. In response to this, we thought it would be helpful to clarify the following points. Who are Occasional Helpers? An Occasional Helper is anyone who is required to complete a Criminal Records check but who is not taking on a formal appointment in Scouting. If anyone is helping in a Section on a regular basis, they should be encouraged to become a Sectional Assistant or Scout Active Support Member rather than an Occasional Helper. What are the differences between these roles? The key differences that you should be aware of are that Sectional Assistants and Scout Active Support Members receive a number of additional benefits including Scouting magazine, Scouting Plus, a higher level of insurance coverage and training to support them in their role. They also accrue service for their role in Scouting. To view a comparison of the roles visit http://bit.ly/s0Ug9u What about Executive Committee Members? Executive Committee Members are also formal appointments and should not be recorded as Occasional Helpers. It is important that they complete the Adult Application (AA) or Change of Role (CR) Form to ensure that they read and sign the charity trustee declaration.
