Manufacturing Technology Center

The Manufacturing Technology Center (MTC) is a not-for-profit organization partially funded by federal and state resources. Our primary mission is to enhance the success of industry in south-west Virginia through innovative consulting. All MTC Project Managers have an average of more than 20 years of hands-on experience in a wide range of industries. All are certified Lean Manu-facturing facilitators through the National Institute of Standards and Technology Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NIST-MEP).

The Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) is a test used to assess the competencies of potential and current employees in the workplace skills areas of:

The CRC is based on the WorkKeys® job skills assessment system. Developed by ACT, WorkKeys® is proven as a link between education and workforce partners to evaluate job skill requirements needed to develop employees and build a better workforce.

Welding: GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) Structural Steel Certification Training

Course Description: The course is designed as an industry welding training and certification course in an identified AWS welding process (AWS D1.3 Structural Welding Code-Sheet Metal). The 30-hour course covers safety, routine equipment maintenance, set-up and troubleshooting, fundamentals of the GMAW process and applications, specific hands-on training and certification preparation in the 1F/2F and 1G welding positions. The course concludes with AWS Certification testing. Previous welding experience is recommended.

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and Project Support CourseThe Manufacturing Technology Center is proud to offer a 12-week course of Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Training and Project Support. The course presents the Lean SS Green Belt body of knowledge in a simulation workshop, application oriented manner. Lean SS Green Belt tools will be demonstrated using a project simulation that takes the participants through the D-M-A-I-C process improvement methodology. The course format was developed around a Train-and-Do approach. Classroom activities will include a combination of lecture and simulation exercises.

Each participant will be required to have a job related and sponsor approved project, which should be selected prior to the start of the class. The course agenda is intended to lead participants through completion of their individual project. MTC instructors will provide weekly, on-site support to mentor and coach participants through the completion of these company specific projects.

Included with the course is a copy of the book “Six Sigma Demystified”, and statistical software Q!Macros.

Basic Contractor Business Licensing ClassThe Basic Contractor Business Licensing Class is required by DPOR for anyone seeking an A, B, or C license for the first time. If you are currently licensed and need to change your business type, it is recommended that you contact the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) at (804) 367-8511 for guidance.

Classes are held in Wytheville on the main campus, in Galax at The Crossroads Institute, and in Marion at the Summit Center.

Dental Radiation SafetyThis course prepares employed dental staff to meet the Virginia Board of Dentistry’s regulations for certification in dental radiation safety hygiene.

Dental Radiation Safety studies techniques and devices for protection from ionizing radiation. This course discusses biological effects, cell sensitivity and the genetic effects of ionizing radiation. It includes practice of intraoral radiographic techniques. Students who successfully complete this workshop will be awarded a Certificate in Dental Radiation Safety. The minimum score for certification test is 75%.

The lecture portion of the class is delivered online with the live clinical on the main campus of Wytheville Community College.

Once the application has been submitted, contact us to request a registration form or register online through the Student Information System self-service menu.

Do you have a cancellation policy?Any course that does not meet minimum enrollment will be cancelled. Cancellation is determined 2 days before the class start date and enrolled students will be notified and issued a refund.

Can I get a non-credit refund?Non-credit refunds are issued if a class is cancelled or if a student withdraws at least 3 days before the class start date.

When can I sign up?Registrations may be taken up until the class start date as long as space is still available. Early registration is encouraged.

When do I have to pay for a class?Payment is due at the time of registration.
