X-12 Continues Utah Hillclimbing Tradition By Ron Dillon On May 17-19, 2019, Utah’s only hillclimb, known as X-12, fired up for the fifth time, using the biggest hills in the world of hillclimbing, off of I-15 near the Idaho/Utah border. Even with really icky weather most of the weekend, the event drew nearly 500 entries from as far away as Wisconsin. This was round 1 of the 2019 Rockwell Pro Hillclimb Series, and that brought out a lot of new faces and new bikes, eager to kick off a new year of hillclimbing on the biggest hill in the sport. Stock and semi-pro classes ran all day Friday in marginal weather at best, but the hill actually got better and better as more moisture was thrown on it, and organizers added more gravel to the road, insuring that no one would get stuck coming or going. Without a doubt, a hillclimb CAN be run here in foul weather, so X-12 will continue to be held in the future in May. This event can run just fine, rain or shine, and like the old Widowmaker that ran above Draper from 1964 to 1988, springtime is perfect for this event. Enthusiasm was higher than ever this year for Utah’s only hillclimb, and partners and supporters were: Box Elder County Tourism, Swire Coke, Monster Energy, Bud Light, Diamond H Trailer Sales, Frank May Ski-Doo, Golden Spike Powersports, Rockwell Time, Cache Valley Honda/Yamaha, Rupp’s Trucking, Roche Ranches, Oxbow Offroad, Balz Clothing, and Lincoln Financial. Five different hills were used over the weekend. The stock, trophy bikes ran on their own 1,025-foot hill on Friday, and not a single rider made it over, with even the best struggling to get above 700 feet, many looping out in huge fashion because of the steepness of the hill and terrific springtime traction. The very talented Dakota Peck made the high mark on the stock hill at 871 feet, winning the huge 450 stock class. Later in the day, a number of altered and semi-pro riders made it over on a different route (which some said was easier than the stock route), but again, many were simply over-whelmed by the sheer size of the hills, which was so long and so big that some actually complained about arm pump. This might just be the toughest hill in the country right now. Many tried, but all failed to get over the 1,025 foot tall stock hill on Friday. If you want to accept one of the great challenges in off-road motorcycling, try taking this monster on next year. And yes, it is way steeper than it looks. The numerous old, Lake Bonneville terraces add even more challenge to this beast of a hill.

X-12 Continues Utah Hillclimbing Tradition By Ron Dillon

On May 17-19, 2019, Utah’s only hillclimb, known as X-12, fired up for the fifth time, using the biggest hills in the world of hillclimbing, off of I-15 near the Idaho/Utah border.

The numerous old, Lake Bonneville terraces add even more challenge to

this beast of a hill.

On the pro side, California’s Joe Shipman looked better than ever, winning the Open, 700 and 450 classes and taking second in the 600 class. Shipman is one of the very, very best hillclimbers in the country right now. Another rider of note was California’s Sammy Humel who finished in the money in three pro classes, and showed that he has arrived as a force to be reckoned with in pro hillclimbing. After staying on track on Friday, even with yucky weather, on Saturday afternoon (Saturday had good weather) organizers looked at Sunday’s weather forecast and decided to run as many classes as possible on Saturday. They were actually able to get all of Saturday’s AND Sunday’s classes run, thus ending the event a day early, with almost 1,000 total runs made. This proved to be a wise decision, as quite foul weather returned on Sunday as the hill as being cleaned up. Maybe next year’s X-12 will have nice weather, or maybe not, but regardless, Utah’s only hillclimb will return on May 15-17, 2020. The organizers again wish to extend a hearty "helmets off" to the sponsors, donators and partners that made things happen to return hillclimbing to Utah again. A big thank you is also in order to the ranch manager Matt Gustafson and his sons, and the small army of staff and volunteers who helped, including: announcer Dan Flint, Trustan and Shanna Anderson, Spanky and Brittany Flint, and many, many others. The event could also not have happened without the support of the Box Elder County Commissioners and Plymouth EMS staff. The next hillclimb hosted by this group will be round five of the 2019 NAHA and round four of the Rockwell Hillclimb Series, the 17th annual Big Nasty, hosted on a beautiful 1,000 acre ranch about 45 miles northwest of Boise, Idaho on, September 12-15. The Nasty will feature four days of hillclimbing and three nights of country western music and will be the first ever dual points event connecting both the NAHA and the Rockwell hillclimb series.
