Dear friends of Xaverian,

Summer brings us some relief from the schedule of the academic year and gives us time for reflection and perspective. Our school year was marked by growth and learning, faithful to the tradition of a Xaverian Brothers education.

Over the years, Xaverian has not wavered in its commitment to academic excellence, service and Christian values. It is these themes that serve as the hallmark of a Xaverian education. Every day we are also exposed to new people and opportunities that set Xaverian apart—unique elements that bring life to the school in a different way. Consider Gian Martini ’15 (page 6) and his goal of joining an elite hiking club; Min Ju Kim ’12 (page 5) and his inspiring, renowned art; or Liam Harney ’84 (page 26) and his two-time world-champion Irish step dancing. Their stories and more are chronicled in these pages and represent the real people who are at the heart of our mission.

Xaverian thrives today because of the generosity and support of our alumni, parents, parents of alumni, friends and most especially our board of trustees. 46th Commencement

Commencement exercises for the Class of 2012—Xaverian’s 46th graduating class—took place on Friday, May 18. The Headmaster, Brother Daniel E. Skala, C.F.X., presented

diplomas to 224 graduating seniors.The ceremony included the recognition of the 9,000th graduate,

Andrew Malin, and the presentation of the Xaverian Award, which went to valedictorian Sean Tenaglia of South Weymouth. Sean, said Brother Dan, “became known for his sincerity and strong work ethic, and was a stunning embodiment of Xaverian’s highest ideals.”

The student speakers were Sean Tenaglia and salutatorian Naman Agarwal of Franklin.

The loyalty and service awards, which recognize students’ involvement in and commitment to the Xaverian community, went to Christopher Diehl, Michael Hagerty, Nam Hee Kim, Anif McDonald, Luke Walsh and Samuel Zatkowski.

Grandparents DayDavid Ginnetty ’15 and his grandmother enjoy Grandparents’ Day at Xaverian. This year, it will be held on Wednesday, October 17.

Open Door PolicyDenis Smith ’67 was at Xaverian when the doors opened and has since helped open doors for countless students. So he was the perfect choice for the 2011 Theodore Ryken Award. The award was established to recognize an adult member of our community who inspires others to live Xaverian’s highest ideals—exactly what Denis has been doing for many years. “Mr. Smith has had a significant influence on many generations of Xaverian students and is himself a member of the first graduating class here in Westwood in 1967,” said Brother Daniel Skala. “We honor Mr. Smith for his dedication to his students and colleagues, and for his devotion to our mission.”

The State of the Arts

For Min Ju Kim ’12, drawing a person is about more than copying features on

paper. It’s about capturing a moment. “Everyone has a different face, and every

time you draw it, it can be different because you have all different emotions.”

Kim was recognized for his work at the Boston Scholastic Art and Writing Awards with

two silver keys and one gold key, and his art was displayed at Artsonia, a New York

City gallery. Although he will be studying prepharmacy or biomedical engineering at

Purdue University, Kim says—and this is good news for the rest of the world—that

art will always be a part of him. “Art is something I can never let go of, so I will force

myself to find a way to keep it in my life.”

A Worldly Perspective

O ver the years, Xaverian students have benefitted from learning with and from students from all over the world.

Students from countries as diverse as China, South Korea, Spain and Lebanon have become a part of the Xaverian culture and shared their own cultures, making for a more diverse and stimulating learning environment.

Nam Hee Kim ’12 (left) may have been almost 7,000 miles from where he was raised in South Korea, but during his time at Xaverian, he made it his home. He was an active member of three national honor societies, the varsity math team, the varsity swimming and diving team, the junior varsity tennis team and the track team. When he was not excelling in the classroom or in athletics, Nam could be found onstage. He was the lead tenor of the chorus and the lead flutist in the jazz band, and he performed with his friends in Live @ the X, Xaverian’s live performance show. In the fall, Nam will be attending Rice University for engineering.

Mike O’Connor, MH ’72, P ’01, in St. Kitts, West IndiesGoing the Extra MileGian Martini ’15 has high standards. Very high. Ever since his dad took him on his first hiking trip at age five, he’s been hooked on heights. Today, Gian spends most of his free time hiking. His goal: to become a member of the Adirondack Forty-Sixers club by summiting all 46 of the Adirondacks’ major peaks. So far, he’s climbed 28, and he hopes to climb the rest within the next two years. Fewer than 8,000 people have made it into the club. “Being at the summit,” Gian says, “is the ultimate accomplishment.”

Fall kicked off the year with some fun family activities. A two-mile road race, a fair and barbeque, an alumni soccer game, flag football and a varsity football game brought the Xaverian community, friends and families, together.

Over the years, Xaverian has demonstrated an ability to

adapt and thrive in a changing world. There is no one

secret to the school’s success. Hard work and extraordinary

leadership inspire lives of learning, faith and service. A key factor,

though, is the Board of Trustees. Although it may go unnoticed

in the daily life of the school, its quiet influence, supervision and

expertise continually drive Xaverian to new heights.

When the school was founded in 1963, all trustees were Xaverian

Brothers who represented the leadership of the sponsoring

congregation. In the 1970s, laymen and women were added to the

board because of their business and financial expertise. Today,

26 men and women including Xaverian Brothers, bring a variety

of perspectives to their work as board members. Their major

responsibilities include promoting Xaverian’s mission, appointing

the headmaster, approving school policies and developing a strategic

plan for the school.

Today’s board makes weighty decisions on many vital school

matters. In adopting its most recent strategic plan “Growing in

Harmony,” the board developed four goals and is working with Cecil

Group and Beacon Architectural Associates on a Campus Master

Plan that addresses the need for additional athletic fields, a student

wellness center and more parking. As Xaverian looks to the future,

the role of the board of trustees is more important than ever.

We sat down with a few of the Xaverian board members to see

just what it’s like to be a member of the board and just why it makes

Xaverian so special.

Rick Spillane, Chairman Rick Spillane ’68, Chairman of the Board, was having a

long week. He was in the process of grading hundreds of papers for his finance class at Babson College and the never-ending rain wasn’t helping. But talking about Xaverian for just 30 minutes put him in good spirits. This past President of Strategic Advisers at Fidelity has been the Chairman of the Board for seven years, and he has great insight into how a

board works and why it matters to Xaverian’s continued success.

Q. What have you seen as a board member and chairman? A. The school was substantially different when I started on the board 14 years ago. The physical

buildings are the obvious things. But what you can’t see is the continued emphasis on excellence in education at the school and the exceptional graduates that have gone on to do great things.

Q. How did Xaverian affect you personally? A. I had Mr. Duddy as a physics teacher, and he made a major impact on me as a person. He

got me very interested in math and science. That’s why I went to engineering school, and that was a terrific decision for me.

Q. In talking to other alumni, what do you consistently find? A. It’s the thing that I’m most proud of, and I find that other alums feel the same way. The

culture of the school which values the contributions of every single student and the strong community spirit as strong today as it was when I was a student. It’s just fantastic.

Q. How does the board of trustees impact the future of Xaverian? A. We have a strategic plan for the future of the school to keep it healthy and strong as it

approaches its 50th anniversary. We want to make sure that we are as strong 50 years from now as we are today and as we were when we started.

Maureen Bleday Maureen Bleday remembers having Xaverian Brothers

to Sunday supper at her house when she was growing up in Westwood. Her father, Edward Hanley ’46, kept in touch with the brothers after graduating from Mission High School and enjoyed keeping them in his life. Who knew that years later, Maureen would still be connected in the Xaverian community. She spent 11 years as a Xaverian parent—she has three sons, Peter ’03, Alec ’06 and John ’10. She brings valuable insight to the board thanks to her background in real estate and town planning, as well as finance—she is clerk and executive vice president of programs and operations at the Yawkey Foundation.

In her two years on the board, Maureen has seen how each member of the board, offering a dynamic skill set, brings value to the conversations. “Brother Dan and Mr. Lalli are such terrific leaders,” she says. “They come to us for input and utilize the various skills and backgrounds of the board members. There is such a high level of expertise, such as finance, business, education, investment, so the board members really bring their perspective to bear as well as their love of Xaverian.”

From the dinner table to the board table, the constancy of mission and the strong relationships among the members of the community haven’t changed, says Maureen, and she’s happy to be a part of the continuation of the Xaverian mission.

A Legacy that Lives OnLongtime board member Jack Egan ’75

may be changing his role on the board, but his dedication persists. Retiring as Vice Chairman after spending 17 years on the board, Jack is an extraordinary example of a loyal alumni. As a co-chair of the capital campaign, which ended in 2004, Jack helped ensure its tremendous success. “Jack’s steadfast support and brilliant leadership over the past 17 years have influenced every aspect of the school,” says Brother Daniel Skala. “Jack has taught me to work hard, confront reality, make difficult choices, always dream big, and commit to a path of enduring excellence. Jack is like the founders of Xaverian, Brother Marcellus and Brother William Drinan, upon whose shoulders we stand. We are stronger for his leadership, wiser for his counsel, and lifted up by his vision for Xaverian’s future.”

had never even been on a plane. But he spent the next year traveling through Latin America on a fellowship from the Rockefeller family. His various volunteer and service jobs included work at a children’s hospital in Guatemala and environmental education in Costa Rica. Today, Tom is CEO at Eze Castle Software, having joined the tech start up in 1998 as COO. He admits that his path at times seemed to come together haphazardly, but his circuitous journey made him business savvy.

While Tom humbly points out that he doesn’t have the years of experience that some board members do, his relative youth, his experiences as a Xaverian student, and his tech- and data-driven mindset are crucial. “I’m not a techie, but I run a technology company,” says Tom. “I’m just kind of a generalist. I’ve learned both technical and analytical ways of thinking, and I try to apply that to the way we think about strategy at Xaverian. My background is being able to build that kind of a business, and more and more, 21st -century running of a school is not that unlike running a business.”

Steve KernSteve Kern ’82 is all about the details. Growing up with a

father who owned a machine shop, he quickly learned the art of exact measurement. As his father taught him, he says, “If something is off a little bit, then it’s no good.” His own career, in the construction business and then finance and investment, has been built on these same principles. And his experience has served Xaverian well during his 17 years on the board. He has offered insight into facilities management, and he is now

serving on the investment committee. Steve’s school pride has only strengthened over the years. He was pleased when his son,

Andrew Kern ’15, enrolled as a freshman this past year. “I know that he’s in good hands,” says Steve. “He showed me what he had learned in his survey tools class about how to make an impactful presentation. Then he proceeded to teach me how to rework a presentation of mine,” he says, laughing.

Steve believes in doing what he can to contribute to the school. For the last two years, he has even held informal parent receptions at his home. “It’s a very small, personal, relaxed way for parents to gain insight into what the school is all about, the value of the education,” he says. “It helps the parents and students see if it’s the right fit.” And they always think it is: everyone who has attended a reception at the home of Steve and his wife, Susan, has chosen Xaverian, which has led to increased enrollment from his town.

Four years ago, Pat Walsh ’98 quit his job working at one of the nation’s largest defense contract to start his own company. Today, he’s supporting

and promoting nonprofit organizations all over the country and empowering them to change the world. So how did a mechanical engineer become a philanthropic pioneer? It all started with a pub crawl.

A few years after college, Pat moved to San Diego from Boston for a change of pace. There, he met up with fellow UMass Amherst alum Scot Chisholm and they began organizing events—starting with a pub crawl—to benefit local

nonprofit organizations. The first beneficiary was the American Cancer Society, inspired because Scot’s mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer when he was in high school. The events were a hit, and Pat and Scot enjoyed the process so much that in 2006 they created an event-production company, StayClassy. For a number of years, Pat had two identities—a deputy program manager at General Dynamics by day, and an event planner by night. “Over the course of a few years we supported two to three dozen different nonprofits,” says Pat. While they were satisfied with the success of their nearly 100 events—including a run with 3,000 participants

and a concert with 5,000—they wanted to make a greater impact.

Nonprofits are typically years behind corporate America, using outdated tools and software, and this can limit their success. So in 2010, Pat and Scot shifted their focus and launched a pioneering fundraising management software package (their first). “We realized there was a significant need in the nonprofit space, and that if we dedicated our company to building software that could empower others to do what we had done, then we could actually scale our impact nationally,” says Pat. Today, their fundraising software serves over 3,000 nonprofits nationwide.

Along with offering nonprofits the support and software they need to manage fundraising operations and run successful campaigns, StayClassy also started the CLASSY Awards. The awards ceremony, which quickly became the largest of its kind in the nation, helps nonprofits gain recognition and new, enthusiastic supporters. And it has brought attention to StayClassy itself. In 2011, Pat and Scot were named by Businessweek as two of America’s top five social entrepreneurs.

For Pat, the greatest payoff is helping the organizations and their causes succeed. “That is what it’s all about,” he says. Consider the combined global impact of the 2011 CLASSY Awards nominees alone. Among other things, orphans in Haiti received one million meals, 81,463 animals were helped and 63 tons of garbage were converted to construction materials. The foundation known as Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a past CLASSY Award winner, has raised more than $50 million for childhood cancer research. Although Alex, the founder, passed away at age eight, people continue to use lemonade stands to raise money for the cause. “We’re enabling a lot of incredible organizations to execute and expand their impact,” says Pat.

Football: Brother Drinan Trophy ReclaimedLeading the team were quarterback Chris Calvanese, lineman Kevin Painten, Maurice Hurst and Hunter Taute. The Hawks ended the season in dramatic form with an exciting 28–21 Thanksgiving win over St. John’s Prep and got back the Brother Drinan Trophy. They finished the season 6–5.

Cross-Country: Another Undefeated ChampionshipSenior captains Chris Schwab and Colin Tonelli guided the Hawks to another undefeated Catholic Conference Championship. Capturing the dual meet title and winning the Catholic Conference meet put the Hawks at 8–0. Xaverian has won the title six of the last seven years. Soccer: Leadership and

Powerlifting: 21 Medals The Hawks won the team trophy by earning fourteen first-place medals, three second-place medals, and four third-place medals. ian MacPherson ’12 (left) was named Best Overall Lifter in the male division at the Second Annual Ryan Moore New England Open High School Powerlifting Championship after

lifting 418 lb. in the squat event, 264 lb. in the bench press and 375 lb. in the deadlift. In total, Ian lifted 1,057 lb., more than seven times his body weight.

Skiing: Went to State FinalsLeading the team was senior captain Greg Cameron. Snow may have been in short supply, but not enthusiasm. The team finished the year third overall in the league and was the first in a decade to have members qualify for the state finals. ian Pratt ’14 was ninth overall in the division, and Andrew Psilakis ’14 (above), eleventh. Both qualified for the state finals. Team MVP Greg Cameron was thirteenth overall in the division and qualified as the division’s first alternate.

Team captains were eddie Pratt ’13 and Jack McClellan ’12, both Catholic Conference all-stars. Senior goalie Dave Michaels was a two-year starter who battled hard for the Hawks. The young team overcame many challenges over the season, showing a lot of growth that is sure to pay off next year.

Hockey: A Growing Team

Wrestling: Tournament WinnersLeading the team were senior captains Kevin Painten, Alexander Porell and Matt McLaughlin. The wrestling team had a strong end to the season, finishing 11–10. The highlight of the season was winning the James Peckham tournament. Kevin Painten ’12 had an outstanding season, finishing sixth at the state tournament and fourth in the Division I All-State Championships, and qualifying for the All–New England Championships.

Indoor Track and Field: A New School RecordThis year’s team excelled both as individuals and as a team, placing second in the league championship meet. Kyle Darrow ’13 set a new school record in the long jump, 22’ 2.5’’, and many of the relay teams competed in the Division I state championships meet. The 4X400m team went on to compete at the all-state and new England championship meets, and the long jump relay team placed first at the Division I state relays.

Swimming and Diving: Fourth in the CCLeading the team were senior captains ross MacPherson and Andrew Benvie. The team finished the season 2–8 but consistently broke personal records and finished the season fourth in the Catholic Conference. Several Xaverian swimmers and divers qualified for South Sectionals, including ross MacPherson ’12, Geoff Martello ’13, Lawrence reynolds ’14 and Ben Dolan ’14 in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Basketball: Young Talent and a New CoachLeading the team were captains Tyler Campo ’12, Bryce Boggs ’13 and Mike warren ’12. Although challenged by injuries, the Hawks ended the season on a positive note, beating Walpole 63–55 to advance to the finals of the Walpole Hoop Classic. They also posted a close win over

Somerville, 66–63. Senior Bryce Boggs was named to the Catholic Conference all-star team. The team has a lot of young talent and looks to return to the playoffs next season with the help of their new coach, Rob Bruckner, a math teacher at Xaverian.

Baseball: State Champs AgainAlgonquin may have earned the first run (in the second inning), but it would be their last. The Hawks came out ahead with a 7–1 finish to become the 2012 Division I state champions. During their championship run, they defeated number-one Lowell and number-two Walpole, as well as Silver Lake, Norwood, Taunton and Algonquin. It’s the school’s second baseball state championship and third state finals appearance. Senior second baseman Chris Hoyt drove in four runs, and

Track and Field: New Triple Jump RecordDana Pagliuca ’13 (above) captured the Division I state championship and the All-State championship, and set a new school record in the triple jump—46’ 4”—winning the New England championship. Kyle Darrow ’13 placed third in the long jump in the Division I meet and fourth in the All-State and New England meet. Led by senior captains Tim Fazekas, Bobby Leon and Brennan Sullivan, the team finished the season 2-1-1.

Ultimate: State ChampsAs the reigning Division II state champions, the A squad had another strong showing in the championships, going 3–1 and defeating BC High to finish fifth in the state. Rugby: 20 Seniors Off to CollegeThe varsity lineup featured over 20 seniors, including captains Michael Sullivan and Brian Judge; most of them will continue playing rugby in college. Mike Sullivan ’12, John Greeley ’13, John rice ’13 and Stephen Zorn ’14 were named to All-Massachusetts teams. The team finished the season 3–5–1.

Volleyball: Quarterfinals VictoryRanked number one in preseason by the Boston Globe, the team made it to the Central Division I quarterfinals, winning the match in three straight sets against Blackstone Valley Regional High School. The most important lesson I learned at Xaverian has taken me years to fully realize. At the core of our school is its ability to develop young men of character and leaders in a variety of endeavors. None of us are

exempt from failure or from making mistakes, but we understand that those mistakes are life lessons that make us stronger. It’s no surprise that our alumni are leading great businesses, heading up non-profits, volunteering for charities and giving back in so many ways. We weren’t all cut from the same cloth, but our time at Xaverian impacted our thinking.

I took on the role as president of the Xaverian Alumni Association last year because I believe in the mission of the school and I want to harness the power of a great group of people. Each year more than 200 members join our ranks, a network exceeding 9,000 individuals. I am dedicated to strengthening the Alumni Association so that we can help advance the mission of the school.

Class of ’67 Celebrates 45 YearsFor the first time, a Xaverian class celebrated its 45th reunion: congratulations Class of 1967! They were joined by the classes of 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002 and 2007 for a sentimental and enjoyable night of reminiscing. In March, nearly 600 parents, trustees, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty and friends attended

Xaverian’s 16th annual gala. The event—“Mission Possible”—raised over $350,000, all of which went to the Xaverian Scholarship Fund.

Distinguished honorees were Brother Joseph Pawlika, C.F.X., from the guidance department; soccer coach Gary Bowers ’87, from the social studies department; Trustee Ken Quigley and Elizabeth Quigley, P ’05, ’08; Robert and Donna Boch, P ’06, ’09; and Mission High graduate Joan Kern, M ’59, P ’81, ’82 and ’87, GP ’10 and ’15 (2).

A record-breaking 150 people attended the annual Boston Business Breakfast, hosted on April 4 by ed weiss ’84, General Counsel for the Boston Red Sox, at Fenway Park’s EMC Club. The previous high was 85 attendees. In a panel discussion moderated by Dennis House ’81, News Anchor WFSB and moderator of Face of the State, Ed, along with Michael egan ’79, Limited Partner in Fenway Sports, and Sam Kennedy, Boston Red Sox COO and president of Fenway Sports Management, provided excellent insight on behind-the-scenes Red Sox management. Other highlights: the amazing views of Fenway Park from home plate and the opportunity to take pictures with the two World Series trophies.

John Remondi HonoredMr. John remondi and his wife, Dorothy, P ’80, ’83 at Cathedral High School’s 10th annual Partnership for Success dinner. The event was held at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel. John was honored for the extraordinary work he has done to support Cathedral.

New Talent on the BoardThe board of trustees has three new members. Brother Lawrence Harvey, C.F.X., Superior General of the Xaverian Brothers, has appointed rick roche, P ’11, Larry Begley ’73 and Dave Capobianco ’76, P ’06.

rick roche is President of Roche Brothers/Sudbury Farms. He and his wife, Cathy, live in Westwood, MA. Their son, Chris, graduated from Xaverian in 2011 and attends Boston College.

Larry Begley, a previous board member (1996 to 2005), is a Partner in the venture capital firm .406 Ventures. He and his wife, Carol, live in Walpole, MA. They endowed the Larry and Carol Begley Scholarship Fund and also, with Larry’s brother, John ’72, the Begley Family Scholarship Fund.

Dave Capobianco is COO/Chief Legal Counsel for Atlantic Management Corporation in Framingham, MA. Dave has been very active in our alumni programming. He and his wife, Kim, live in Holliston, MA. Their son, Andrew, graduated from Xaverian in 2006.

Adam Kennedy, Remembered Adam Kennedy ’00 exemplified Xaverian’s ideals. When he wasn’t studying or playing sports—excelling at football, wrestling, weightlifting and track—he was busy doing community service both through the school and in his personal time. In 2006, after attending Norwich University and graduating as a member of the Corps of Cadets, he was deployed to Iraq. In April 2007, he lost his life fighting for his country while on a mission near Baghdad.

Adam’s family, along with the class of 2000, has established a scholarship fund in his name. The scholarship will be awarded to a student entering his senior year with demonstrated financial need and who exemplifies the values of courage, honor, respect and service to society—all of which Adam embodied. On October 8, 2011, a memorial was placed beneath the flagpole at Xaverian’s stadium to honor Adam and all the members of the Xaverian community who have given their lives in service to their country.

And the Survey Says…

X averian is meeting its academic and administrative goals. That’s

according to alumni and parents, who recently completed two

independent online surveys asking for feedback. While both

surveys were largely affirming, they also offered insight on areas for

improvement. School leadership, with faculty, are studying the results and

developing an action plan.

The first survey, completed by alumni, parents of current students

and parents of alumni, was conducted by two high-level communications

firms: Primegroup of Washington, DC, and Brodeur Partners of Boston

(firm of John Brodeur, P ’91, ’94). It revealed that parents believe the

school is guided by a strong sense of values, is focused on developing

character in young men, is academically excellent and is committed to

community service. More than 90 percent of respondents indicated that

these descriptions apply to Xaverian. Parents also overwhelmingly agreed

that the school has wonderful teachers and is financially sound and well

managed.

The second survey, completed by parents of current students, was

conducted by Independent School Management. It asked parents to

rank things like the educational value of Xaverian, overall satisfaction

and academics, both independently and compared to other schools. The

results: parents feel that Xaverian has strong academics and is an excellent

value. And they strongly agreed that they have a clear understanding of

Xaverian’s philosophy and mission.

Thank you to everyone who participated. Both surveys are helping the

school understand better how well it is achieving its goals. This in turn will

help further our mission to educate young men of character and faith.

Ensuring the future success of the school was the late Rocco Zoppo’s priority. This generous early benefactor played a key role in establishing Xaverian, and his family carries on his legacy through three scholarship funds. Since 1996, at least 49 students have been aided by the Zoppo family scholarships. All are given to incoming freshmen based on financial need and scholastic achievement.

Changing of the Guards

The goals of the advancement program are to communicate with Xaverian’s constituencies and to secure the

support we need to remain financially healthy and accessible to qualified students. Recent changes to our office aim to enhance our reach and further the school.

With nearly 25 years of experience in fundraising and advancement, plus a deep commitment to Xaverian’s mission, Larry Furey returned last fall to lead the advancement program as the Assistant

Headmaster for Advancement. Previously, after nine years at Xaverian, he spent seven years focusing on his consulting services firm.

With a marketing, communications and publications background in higher education, Julie Barr joins Xaverian as the new Director of Communications. “In my short time here,” says Julie, “I have already seen what an amazing community it is—a place that fosters high-quality education, strong values and excellence. My goal is to help that shine through in our communications in every way possible.”

The previous director of communications, Chuck Carmone ’85, has moved into the role of Director of Alumni and Special Events. Chuck’s commitment to and passion for Xaverian, along with his talent for

communicating with his fellow alumni, make him a great fit for the role.

Mary risio is retiring after 10 years as the Director of Leadership Giving and Stewardship. Her work with volunteers, benefactors and our scholarship program has had an immeasurable impact on Xaverian. She will be missed, although fortunately she will be continuing to help part-time.

A reception was held to honor the 252 loyal members of the Francis Xavier Society,

which comprises donors of $1,000 or more. This year, those who have given

consistently—for 5, 10, 15, and even 20 years in a row—were further recognized. Their

continued giving is what keeps Xaverian going.

Classmates, Serving TogetherLieutenant Colonel Bill O’Brien ’83 and Colonel Andy Lawlor ’81 were deployed to Afghanistan with the Army National Guard as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and both received a Bronze Star Medal for their service. While in Afghanistan, Andy served as the Command Judge Advocate for the 26th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, a supervisory attorney position akin to a general counsel post in a civilian corporation. This was his second deployment, having deployed to Kosovo for 16 months in 2006-2007. Bill served as the director of engineering. He also oversaw 15 civil affairs projects in greater Kabul, including the construction of schools, medical clinics and wells.

Alpha Sigma Nu. Greg was honored with the St. Ignatius Loyola Medal, the highest award conferred upon an undergraduate student who embodies a commitment to service and the mission of the university. He will be working at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Boston.

Bradford Hilson graduated from Georgetown University with a B.S. in biology. He will be working for the Federal Drug Administration laboratory at the National Institute of Health helping to develop Ebola virus vaccines. He will also be applying to medical school.

Brendan raftery graduated from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences this spring with a bachelor’s in pharmaceutical and healthcare business. He works at Millennium Pharmaceuticals and teaches an after school program at the Science Club for Girls in Cambridge, MA. Brendan is training to make his return to the ice as a nationally competitive speed skater.

Chris wagner ’09 was just signed to a three-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks. Chris helped propel Xaverian to the semi-finals of the Super 8 hockey tournament in 2008. “Playing at Xaverian gave me the foundation to learn to play with bigger, stronger kids,” said Chris.

Chris recently completed his sophomore season with Colgate of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC), scoring 17-34/ 51 points with 69 penalty minutes (PIM). Leading all NCAA Division I underclassmen in scoring, Chris’s 51 points ranks sixth in the nation. He ranked as high as fourth in the nation when the Raiders played their final game of the ECAC tournament. In addition, the 6-0, 200-pound bruising center recorded the second-most points in one season for Colgate since former Duck, Andy McDonald (58 points) did so in 1999-00.

The Xaverian graduate completes his collegiate career having scored 26-44/ 70 points with 95 PIM over two seasons and 79 games. He co-led the ECAC in scoring this year and ranked second in assists with 15-24/ 39 points in 27 conference games. In addition, Chris had a career-high 11-game point streak (7-10/ 17) from February 4-March 16. Accolades for his sophomore season include ranking among the top three finalists for the ECAC Best Defensive Award, as well as Second Team ECAC All-League honors. Chris was selected in the fifth round (122nd overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Justin Thomas graduated from Georgetown University with a bachelor’s in Chinese. This summer he is going to Korea to learn Korean, and in the fall he will start studying for a master’s degree in East Asian Studies at Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Patrick wendt graduated from Salve Regina University. He started on the rugby team as the strong side flanker. His team won the Small School Division III National Championship this past April in Glendale, CO.
