||   Sri Rama Navami Tributes to Sri Ramachandran    ||

Sri Raamachandra was born on a Panguni Punarvasu Nakshthram in auspicious KaDaka laghnam. This year, Sri Raama navami falls on March 25.

At Oppiliappan Koil, Sri Rama Navami is celebrated for 9 days and it concludes with the singing of Pancha Rathnam and kanakAbhishEkam for the newly weds on March 25.

I will add my contributions to Sri Rama Navami Celebration and focus on the Roopa Mahimai of SaakEtha Raaman. The Tamil poet, Sri AruNachala Kavi Raayar in his Raama Naataka krithis tried to comprehend the sarvanga Soundharyam of Sri RaamA and gave up. He declared his helplessnes in the Krithi with the pallavi: "antha Raama soundharyam aRinthu Sollap pOmO? (is it possible to understand anddescribe to others the Divya Soundharyam and LaavaNyam of the Lord's beauty ?).

NammAzhwAr's statement is, "kaRpAr IraamapirAnai allAl maRRum kRpArO?" One can intrepret the meaning for this rhetoric question in many ways. If we consider that NammAzhwAr is talking to the students of SaamudhrikA lakshaNam, then one can assume that the AzhwAr is suggesting that there is no superior embodiment of beauty than Sri RaamA and why waste one's time studying the imperfect beauty of others.

Poet Kambhan born in ThErazhundhUr describes the incomparable beauty of Sri Ramachandran, when He broke the Siva dhanus in SitA Svaymavaram. SitA devi was drinking with Her eyes the divya soundharyam of Her dear One . Kambhar says:

nampiyaik kaana nangaikku Aayiram nayanam vENDumkompinaik kaaNum thOrum kurisirkkum annathE aam

Meaning: Some said: Our Sithai must have thousand eyes to fully enjoy the beauty of Raaman; others said Raaman should similarly have thousand eyes to enjoy our Sithai's soundharyam.

Saint ThyagarAjA's anubhavam of the divya LaavaNyam and Soundharyam of his Aaradhana mUrthy are the most exquisite. As he performed, nithyArAdhanam, he would be lost in the enjoyment of the indescribable beauty of the Lord blessing him with His darsanam. Out will pour krithis like: LaavaNya RaamA! kannulAra jUdavE; athi LaavaNya RaamA !

Many are the krithis of ThyagarAjA, where we enjoy the paramAnandham of Saint ThyagarAjA over the experience of the Divya

Page 5: xa.yimg.comxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/2182732/164899079/name... · Web viewThe detailed word by word meaning of the above VarALi Pancharathnam and the four others are archived in the Bhakthi

Meaning: In AyodhyA, the Punarvasu nakshthram kown otherwise as vEy and the KaDaka Lagnam eulogized by the DevAs for its sanctity jumped with joy over the thought of the SoubhAgyam that was going to come their way.

Then Queen KousalyA of auspicious attributes gave birth to SarvEsvaran (who held all the universe inside His stomach, who is not fully understood even by the great VedAs, who had the anjana mEni with the effulgence of the dark blue rainy cloud) so that the inhabitants of this world can gain all the wealth in this world and the other.

Next Bharathan was born as the son of Queen Kaikeyi during Meena lagnam and Poosa Nakshathram. Queen Sumithrai gave birth to Lakshmanan as the first of the twins soon after; at that time, Ayila Nakshathram and KaDaka lagnam were in unison .After LakshmaNan's birth, Queen Sumithrai gave birth to another male child known as Satrugnan at the point in time, when Maga Nakshathram and Simha Raasi were united .Rest is history that has been sung by Adhi Kavi Valmiki Maharishi and his kali yuga avathAram, Saint ThyagaraajA.

We will continue with the story of RaamAyaNA celebrated by Saint ThyagarAjA and the most madhura naamAs, which the Saint used to salute Sri Raamaa as he went around the streets of ThiruvayyARu during his unchivritthi and the krithis that he placed at the feet of the Lord as NaamArchanams.

We will highlight the Hari KaambhOji janya Raaga krithis breifly and include in this posting the selected fragrant names that the Saint chose to perform nithyAradhanam to Sri SithA LakshmaNa Bharatha Satrugna Hanumath SamEtha Sri Raamachandran .

THE REMAINING HARI KAAMBHOJI JANYA RAAGA KRITHIS****************************************************************

08. Kedaaragoulaa ( karuNA jaladhi Daasarathi kalyANa suguNa nidhi )

In this krithi, the Saint addresses the Lord as the Ocean of Compassion and sharply questions the Lord for being indifferent to him. Our sadhguru asks in despair: "ParAthpara ! Taaraka nAma! You will not lose Your patrimony, if you decide to show Your DayA to me. My mind is getting agitated over Your indifference. I can not bear it. Please show mercy".

09. KarnAtaka BehAg (nEnandhu vEdakudurA Sri Hari)

This krithi is in a mood of naicyaanusandhAnam. He asks the Lord: "Sri Hari! Where can I search for You now that You have hidden Yourself from me? I have been a sinner and have been performing wicked deeds and have pretended to be a great BhakthA. I am suffering now. Where can I find You?".

10. Kokhiladhvani ( koniyAte naayeta Daya velagu)

This krithi is in the mood of anger and rightful indignation. Our sadhguru asks the Lord to explain why He is bargaining with him as if he has not been totally devoted to eulogising the Lord and singing about Him ceaselessly. He reminds the Lord that it is not just, since the

Page 8: xa.yimg.comxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/2182732/164899079/name... · Web viewThe detailed word by word meaning of the above VarALi Pancharathnam and the four others are archived in the Bhakthi

Lord is aware that ThyagarAjA has not sought any religion or paths other than Him and Him (Sri Raaman) alone.

11.PrathApa VarALi ( VinanAsakoni)

This krithi records our Sadhguru's longing to be near the Lord and hear the madhura sambhAshaNai between the Lord and SitA pirAtti .The bard says: Oh Lord! When You and Your dear consort were playing indoor games such as chathurangam, both of You were engaged in sweet conversationswith mutual understanding of each other's mind as Yeka sEshi dampathis. AnjanEyA and BharathA were fortunate to hear that conversation. I would also like to feast my ears with that loving conversation. Please bless me also to hear it.

12.ChenchukAmbhOji( VararAga layaj~nulu )

Here the bard and BhakthA confides to the Lord that self-satisfied people brag and deceive the world by pretending that they are experts in RaagA, layam, SvarasthAnams and subtle mUrchanAs without knowing that Naadham, which emanates from the body is the divine form of the most sacred PraNavam.

13.ChAyAtarangiNi ( Ithara dhaivamuluvalla ilanu soukhyamA Raama )

This is another Krithi expressing the ananya Bhakthi of the Saint of ThiruvaiyyARu. He explains his position to Sri RaamA: "Is it possible to gain happiness through the worship of Gods other than You? Without rancour towards other faiths, my mind is firmly anchored in You with indescribable love. Whether You choose to protect me or abandon me, I have placed my entire trust in You. Please treat me as Yours. This is the appropriate moment.

14.Navaraskannada ( ninnu vinA maa ma dhenthu nilvathE Hari Hari)

This krithi reminds us of Thirumangai Mannan's ThirupullANi paasuram: "yellOrum yenn tannai yEsilum pEsidinum, PullANi EmperumAn poy kEttirunthEnE". In that spirit, the Vaalmiki avatharar says: "Sri Hari! My mind refuses to dwell on anything other than You. My eyes are fully bewitched by Your soundharyam; my ears are ringing with Your kathAmrutham; my tongue and mouth feel blessed only by reciting Your Taaraka nAmam ;Wherever I see, I see only Your beautiful form; to me, even Your harsh, distasteful and deceitful words have become relishable. Verily, Thou art the phalan of all of my tapas, DhyAnam and AarAdhanam.

15.NAARAYANI ( RaamA neevE ghAni)

In the mood of DhainyOkthi, Sadhguru swaamigaL begs the Lord to cheer him up with the assurances of protection. Who else is there to protect me? Bhaktha BhAgadhEya! Naaga Sayana! Muni Yaaga Paalana! SaakEthapura VihAra! ThAtha vachana Paala ! Sundara-vadhana! Paavana! Oh Keeper of Your father's promise! Please bless me . There is no one else to protect me!

16. NAARAYANAgoulaa (kathalE vaadu Raamudu )

Page 9: xa.yimg.comxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/2182732/164899079/name... · Web viewThe detailed word by word meaning of the above VarALi Pancharathnam and the four others are archived in the Bhakthi

Here, the bard is in the rapturous state of arising from the reflection on the limitless mahimai of the Lord. He salutes the Lord as Adhi madhyAntha rahithan, Jagath KaaraNan, Sarva VyApi and the adhi bheejam of the chethanams and achEthanams. He has an answer to the MaayA vaadhins here with the statement that the creation of the Lord is not some thing to be dismissed as Maayaa and this world and its entities arose from the sankalpam of the Lord and are very real.

17. Naatta Kurinji ( Kuvalaya DaLa NayanA )

In this long krithis with eight charaNams set in the mood of amarsha rOsha rOshOkthi , the saint protests to the Lord about His indifference: " I have been deeply in love with You. You wont cast Your glance my way ! What kind of behavior is that ? Have You forgotten me or is it that You are a God devoid of glory as a Bhaktha Rakshakan ?I have been singing constantly that You are the supreme among Gods . I have totally renounced the temptations of the world . If You do not have daya for me , wont You earn a bad name that You are not a SaraNAgatha rakshakan ? Give me wisdom and stand by me and accept my worship .

18.Bangalaa ( SaakshilE tanuthsu SaadhimpakE )

This is another krithi protesting the Lord's neglect. Here the sage of ThiruvaiyAARu takes the Lord to task: " Oh my dear One ! They say that You declared that You will protect without fail all those , who soughtrefuge in You . Please do not try to say that there was no human witness to the above statement of Yours referring to Your SaraNAgatha RakshaNa vratham .If You do so ,the people of the world will laugh at You . Saakshi lEdhanuchu saadhimpakE , Sathyasantha Sadhbhaktha paalaka ! " Only the great BhakthAs can get away with the Lord thru such protestations questioning His veracity.

19.YadhukulakAmbhOji( daya sevayyaa sadhaya RaamachandrA )

SitA Svayamvaram and the Lord claiming Her hand by winning the contest of chording the Siva Dhanus is the subject of this krithi in a mood of Tanmayathvam. The saint visulaizes himself as the Naayaki of the Lord and asks the Lord : " Assure me my Lord , Your grace and a small portion of joy , SitA Devi had , when You arrived at the svayamvara mantapam and chased away Her worries by bending and breaking the mighty bow of Sivaa . Vouchsafe to ThyagarAja Naayaki the protection that You gave to SitA DEvi by tying the Maangalya sUthram around her neck after winning Her hand in the contest ".

20.RavichandrikA (Niravdhi sukhadha nirmala roopa )

This whole krithi seeking the rakshaNam of the Lord is full of moving naamArchanai. " Niravathi sukhadha ( One who confers limitless bliss! ),niramla rUpa! , maragatha MaNi nipa dEha !( One who has the tejaslike an eamerald gem ), Sri MaNi lOla , Sritha jana Paala ! bheema ParAkrama! ThyagarAja Vinutha ! maamava ".Simple padhams and elegant mood of Bhakthi are housed here .

21.Raagapanjaram ( VaradhA navanIthAsA paahi)

Page 10: xa.yimg.comxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/2182732/164899079/name... · Web viewThe detailed word by word meaning of the above VarALi Pancharathnam and the four others are archived in the Bhakthi

This krithi in the UpAnga Raagam of Raaga Panjaram is another example of lilting chandhams . This is addressed to the boon-granting ,navanItha priyan, KrishNan . His invocation to the varadhan to appear before him (yEhi) is filled with Bhakthi .DhAnava Madha naasA yEhi (Oh Lord who quells the pride of asurAs ! please come before me ! ). Oh Lord with the majestic gait of an elephant in rut ! please appear before me ! Suma Saradha ! Aasaa rahitha ! Kara dhAsana! yEhi ! Paahi !What a splendidly phrased invitation !

22.SahAnA ( dEhi tava padha bhakthim VaidEhi pathitha paavani)

This is a prayer to SitA pirAtti to bless him with parama bhakthi for Her blessed feet . Oh Divine Consort of RaamA ! The entire universe is Your form .You are the cause of my good fortune. You protect those who seek refuge in You . Oh Devi ! You have permanent residence in the heart lotus of ThyagarAjA !

23.Sarasvathi ManOhari ( yenthavEdukOntu Raagava bhantha mElarA )

This is a krithi asserting the Saint's MahA VisvAsam in the Lord as his protector. " Chala nammithini , Saaravabhouma " are the words of the Bhakthan . Believing with joy that the greatest bliss consists of finding You in my heart lotus , I have reposed my total faith and trust in YOU . Please do not tarry to come to me ! How long should I pray to You to appear before me ?

24.SaamA (santhamu leka soukayamu lEthu)

The flute genius late T.R.Mahaalingam renderd this beautiful krithi in 1987 in the most moving manner. The saint advises us in this krithi : "Without tranquility , there is no happiness for anyone , whether he is a Vedantin , who has controlled his senses.Without quietitude , there is no happiness for one even if he has a lovely family , huge estate , rich tapas , Veda-Saasthra paandithyam or Bhagavatha reputation .

25.Suddha SaavEri ( KaalharaNamElarA HarE Sri SeethArAmA )

In this emotion-soaked krithi ,the Saint asks SitA Raaman the reason for His delay in blessing him .He says: " Oh Lord known as the embodiment of ThyAgam ! Who else is there to save me ? I have wandered day in and day out and finding refuge nowhere , I have sought Your sacred feet and performed Prapatthi . I have sought and held Your holy feet from my very birth . KaalharaNamElarA ? HarE ! SithA RaamA ! Suguna jaala ! karuNAlavAla ! ".

26.SupOshiNi ( raminthsuvArevurA RaghUtthama ninu vinA )

This krithi is in celebration of the Naama MahAthmyam of the Lord . Here the bard confesses : Oh RaghUttamA ! Who else is there among the beings of this Universe, who can transport one to the height of bliss except You ? Even the rsplendent DevAs do not comprehend the secret significance of Your holy name , nor secure the Isvaryam of bliss arising from the recitation of Your Taaraka Naamam .

27.Surati( GeethArthamu SangIthAnandhamu)

Page 11: xa.yimg.comxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/2182732/164899079/name... · Web viewThe detailed word by word meaning of the above VarALi Pancharathnam and the four others are archived in the Bhakthi

This krithi is in the form of a conversation with his mind. The Saint states : Oh My foolish mind ! Behold ! here in Raama NaamA , You have the full significance of the Bhagavadh GitA ( VedAnthA ) and the nectarine bliss of Music .This secret is well known to HanumAn, who constantly worships the holy feet of SitApathi , the antharyAmi of SivA , Sun , Time et al ."

28.SvaravarALi ( PrArabhdhamitlunDukA )

This is a krithi dealing with the mood of NirvEdham . ThyagarAja SwamigaL blames his past karmAs interfering with the acquisition of the Lord's grace and states that there is no point in blaming others . He continues : " Those whom I help do me harm. When I show mercy to others , they level unfounded charges aainst me. Fickle-minded people who put on the garb of BhakthAs become my enemies ".

NirvEdham is essential before one can climb the ladder of Bhakthi towards the goal of Prapatthi and gaining the fruit of Moksham thereafter by conducting the true life of a PrapannA . Swami Desikan has set a whole chapter full of Nirvedham in PaadhukhA Sahasram to emphasize this cardinal point .

On this Sri Raam aNavami day , it is my parama bhAgyam to place at the lotus feet of Janaki Vallabhan these thoughts celebrating the glory of His Parama BhakthA,

Sri RaamyaNa NavAha Patanam is a tradition , where the seven cantos of Srimadh RaamAyaNam is recited over 9 days prior to Srirama Navami. On Sri Raama navami day , PattabhishEkha sargam is recited and Special ArAdhanam is performed for Sri SitA sametha Raamachandran . We will cover 7 krithis on each of the remaining four days. Today, we will cover the krithis in the RaagAs DevamanOhari, GhAnavAridhi,IsamanOhari ,UmAbharaNam ,Kamas, Kaapi NaarAyaNI and KunthalavarALi .

1.DevamanOhari Krithi:Kannna tanDri Naapai*******************************************In this morning Raagam , Saint ThyagarAjA has composed three krithis including the above . Kanna TanDri Naapai is a plaintive cry forthe Lord's DayA . Sadhguru asks : " Oh My Father ! Please do not hold back your compassion for me . I can not bear the suffering caused by Your neglect. Please do not ever deny me Your DayA on the grounds that (1) I am just going through the daily routines of life such as eating and sleeping and leading an animal edition of human existence (2)I do not have the resolution and faith to possess ceaseless devotion to You and (3) I do not understand the relationship between me as a Sesha Jeevan and Yourself as a SarvasEshi and my supreme Master .

2.GhanavAridhi Krithi: Sva-Yogya kathanA krithi*********************************************The pallavi starts with a prayer: Daya jUchuDa kidhi vELarA ; DaasarathE . manjuLAkArA !This indeed is the time to confer on me Your grace.Oh Lord , who is the lion against the fierce elephant of SamsAric afflictions! The work You assigned me has been carried out now with happiness .Please bless me with Your grace . A mood of Aarthi Prapathti sets in .

3.IsamanOhari Krithi:ManasA Raamachandhruni********************************************This is a Maanasa SambhOdhana ktithi, where the Saint appeals to his mind not to forget Sri Raamachandran. He says: "Please do not get deluded over the thought that He took the human form (mere mortal). Please always reflect on the truth that He is the Supreme Being appearing in Human form. Please read the third and the sixth chapters of Srimadh RaamAyaNam to remind yourself that He is the Supreme Lord who incarnated as the son of King Dasarathan at the request of the suffering BrahmA and the DevAs. Please remember that He has assigned the duties of Srushti (creation, Pushti (protection) and nashti (destruction) to the thri-mUrthys as belonging to a lower order and is concentrating on what He likes to do the most (viz)., engagement in the act of granting boons to His dear devotees .

4.UmAbharaNam Krithi: Nija marmamulanu delisina vaarini*******************************************************Oh RaamachandrA! Why do You take pleasure in harassing & testing

Page 13: xa.yimg.comxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/2182732/164899079/name... · Web viewThe detailed word by word meaning of the above VarALi Pancharathnam and the four others are archived in the Bhakthi

even those vivEkis, who are well aware of the real truth/ nija Marmam (viz)., that it is You , who created the demi-gods and assigned them duties appropriate to their sthAnams. These vivEkis are aware that it is You who create DehAthma-Bramai (the delusion that the perishable body is the same as the eternal aathman) even amongst those who are experts in Veda-Saasthra-PurANams, who comprehend the six Vaidhika Mathams , who recite Your names and who are rulers of the Earth. Why do You taunt even these VivEkis, who fully understand Your nija marmam and avathAra rahasyams? Is it fair?

5.Kamaas Raaga Krithi: Sujana Jeevana SuguNa BhUshaNa Raama*************************************************************Kamas is known for many JaavaLis . In Saint ThyagarAjA's time , it was an UpAngha Raagam . His lineage of disciples grew its ranjakathvam over time and made it into a BhaashAnga Raagam that it is today . The heart of the krithi is a prayer to the Sujanan Jeevanan , Sri Raaman to protect him . The Saint in a ripe mood of Bhakthi calls the Lord with delectable naamAs and requests his Ishta Dhaivam to protect him .

42. Thirumanthirachurukku

Page 19: xa.yimg.comxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/2182732/164899079/name... · Web viewThe detailed word by word meaning of the above VarALi Pancharathnam and the four others are archived in the Bhakthi

Swamy Desikan wrote three prabhandams on Rahasya thrayam of Thirumanthram , Dwayam and Charamaslokam as Thirumanthirachurukku, Dwayachurukku, and charamaslokachurukku. Thirumanthiram is the best of all, essence of vedas, evil avoiding, and assures all benefits. This formed as a tool for all prayers, suitable for all sects, and praised by Acharyas and Azhwars. Thirumanthiam in eight letters shows the path to Sriman Narayana.

The first part of Thirumanthiram is pranavam OHM as akara ukara makara combination, are dealt in 1 to 5 pasurams. Akaram denotes the Sarava Rakshakan , SrIman Narayana . Akaram " instructs us to meditate on Sriman Narayana .In Ukaram, it stands for its power to reject all other connections or links.Akaram and Karma precede the Makaram. Ukaram refers to Mahalakshmi, just as Akaram refers to Narayana. We are all the bonded servants to the Divine couples represented by Akaram and Ukaram and the purpose of our births gains so much due to this. NAMAHA is explained in 6th pasuram praying for valvinai matruvire , as making one to disassociate from all pleasures . The meanings of NARA AYANA are found in pasuram 7&8. In Tenth pasuram He says as Sriman narayana is saviour of all , residing with Mahalakshmi for ever, omnipotent, omnipresent. The term Kandavar villar , villak karuthuvar kangilare persons knowing this will not reveal it so easily, and persons willing to reveal are seem to be not knowing it. He says as Those who interpret these deep meanings in a disrespectful and incompetent manner are not to be viewed as knowledgeable people of this rahasyam .

43. DwayachurukkuDwayachurukku is 12 pasurams on the substance of Dwaya mantra. Dwayam consists of two words as its means and effects, for comfortable peaceful life to every human being. In the first pasuram Swamy Desikan says as Mahalakshmi requested Narayana to grant a mantra as means and ends of flourishing life to all souls and this dwaya mantra with ten words thus became immortal treasure to all as Pathum tholaiya nithiyaginranave . The six meanings of Sree is indicated in second pasuram.SrI Maha lakshmi, seeing the jeevas who are immersed in the samsara sagara took pity on us and pleaded to Sriman Narayana to show us a way to overcome this endless chain of birth and death. Sriman Narayana, blessed her ( and us the jeevas) with a mantra by joining the two stanzas that are scattered in the upanishads. This mantra can be recited by any one, at any time without any restrictions. This is called Dwaya. Dwaya means two. This mantra has two stanzas. First line of the mantra explains the means or upaya to reach HIM. The second part of the mantra explains the fruit or phala of the reciting this mantra. This prabandham explains the meaning of the Dwaya mantra and to this name.

In 2to 11 pasurams meaning of the following padhams of the mantra are explained in detailed. .

1. SrI 2. the 'Madh'{man) vihudhi attached to the SrI 3. Narayana 4. Charanau 5. sharanam

6. “Pra” and “badh” padhams 7. “Thanmai urubu” of prabadh'ye'8. Sriman narayana in the second part(srimathe) 9. fourth order in narayana'ya' 10. namaha .The consolidated meaning of Dwaya mantra is in 12th pasuram.

44.CharamaslokacchurukkuCharama Sloka Churukku consists of 11 Paasurams summarising the many meanings of Srimad Bhagavath Geetha's Charama Slokam in chapter 18 sloka 66. In Kurukshetram Arjuna saw

in front of him the assembly of his close relatives and great Acharyas ready to engage in war. Arjuna looked at Sri Krishna , and begged the Lord to instruct him on what is the right course of action. Sri Krishna took pity on the confused Arjuna and said Srimad Bhagavath Geetha .Arjuna was further disturbed in difficulties in practising Bhakthi yogam as upaayam for Moksham and the considerably long

Page 20: xa.yimg.comxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/2182732/164899079/name... · Web viewThe detailed word by word meaning of the above VarALi Pancharathnam and the four others are archived in the Bhakthi

time to yield the desired Phalan of Moksham. Then Krishna taught him the easy way to practice and swift fruit yielding Prapathti Yogam for gaining Moksham. The Slokam describing Prapathti yogam and its performance is called the Charama Slokam .As It has many special meanings , it is included as the third and final rahasyam for SriVaishnavas.

The first pasuram is on the full meaning of charama slokam Sarva dharman parithyajya Maam yekam Saranam vraja aham thva sarva paapeya: mokshayishyami maa sucha as enthanaithozhuga enru . The three yogams are recommended for the knowledgeable and competent persons only. But for others ,they are just asked to approach Krishna and to surrender Him totally. He will then stand in the place of all these difficult upayams and grant them the fruits of Moksham .

The ten Paasurams from 2 to 11 is on the words from the above slokam. The meaning of "Sarva Dharman Parithyajya" is the abandoning of all up .In 2nd pasuram six meanings to this word "Sarva Dharman " is given. In third pasuram four of divine attributes Vaathsalyam, Swamithvam,Souseelyam, and Soulabhyam through the word maam is described.

1. Vaathsalyam is karuna ,which overlooks the trespasses and makes Him accept them .

2. Swamithvam is the Gunam that there is no one , who is equal or superior to Him

3. Souseelyam is to mix with others of lowly and lofty attainments with an equal zest .

4.Soulabhyam is responding and blessing the devotees.

Avathara Rahasyam is also narrated in this pasuram. The concluding word maasucha

stands for " please do not grieve" in which chethanan is exposed to sorrow from many sources in his family life. Sri Krishna says here that chethanan can feel free from all those sorrows due to His intervention and protection .The meaning of Charamaslokam is Our sakthi is limited. Our life here is also limited . But we are anxious to gain Moksham without delay. It is very difficult for us to observe various upayams to gain Moksham. Phalam takes place after considerable delay . So do not chase these frustrating ways. Sriman Narayana is easily accessible to one and all . He is the protector of all human beings in the world.HE is Jagath Rakshakan and so best is to choose Him alone as means . So He said as Maam yekam Saranam vraja .

Note. Errata ; In Vedanta Desika part 11, it is written as part 6 and it may be changed as part 11. Also, sl.no 34 is repeated twice. Hence sl. no 34 and 35 may be changed as 35 and 36.In part 12 sl.no 38 to 39 may be changed as 37 to 40. In Kothayin Geethai part 4 in first para 'Moonram Thiruvanthathi' is to be deleted after Periazhwar Thirumozhi . Errors regretted and plead to forgive if any errors in this issue as this subject are highly philosophical. Three more Tamil prabhandams on Geethartha Sangraham, Prabhandasaram and Ahara niyamam will be continued .....ARUMBULIYUR JAGANNATHAN RANGARAJAN

VALMIKI RAMAYANABy Dr. Saroja Ramanujam, M.A.,Ph.D , siromani

Ayodhya kanda

17. Dasaratha dies of griefSumanthra and Guha were watching Rama till they disappeared from sight and Sumanthra sorrowfully returned to Ayodhya on seeing whom returning without Rama people were desolate. The whole Ayodhya was without lustre and so was the king. Sumanthra approached Dasaratha who, on seeing him coming alone fainted and regaining consciousness could not speak to him. Then Kaousalya desolate with grief, admonished him saying that he need not fear to talk to Sumanthra since Kaikeyi was not there. Then Sumathra conveyed the message of Rama to Dasaratha. When Dasaratha asked him whether Lakshmana nad Seetha said anything he told him that Lakshmana reproached Dasaratha for sending Rama ot forest sayng that it was totally unjust even if it was to fulfil the boon given to Kaikeyi. Lakshmana further said that how could Dasaratha maintain his dignity as a king after such an act. Finally Lakshmana said that, to him Rama is the father, brother and all relation henceforth, implying that he didinot consider Dasaratha as his father anymore. Then Sumanthra said that Seetha did not say a word but was profusely shedding tears at the injustice done to her husband.

Then Kousalya could not contain herself and accused the king of having done a great harm to Rama and to herself, who looked upon him as her sole support. She said that Dasaratha could share the happiness of Kaikeyi and Bharatha and be free from worry because Rama will never touch the kingdom once given to Bharatha even after he returns from the forest. Thereupon Dasaratha appealed to her noble sentiments and asked her to have pity on him whose heart is torn asunder by grief equally. Then Kousaylya became her noble self once more and asked his forgiveness. Then Dasaratha said he could remember the curse upon him and said that he was then paying the price of his misdeed done while he was young.

Page 24: xa.yimg.comxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/2182732/164899079/name... · Web viewThe detailed word by word meaning of the above VarALi Pancharathnam and the four others are archived in the Bhakthi

Dasaratha was skilled in shooting an arrow at the unseen target guided by the sound. Once he sent an arrow hearing the sound of an elephant drinking water and it turned out to be a hermit boy who was filling his pitcher with water, which sound Dasaratha mistook as the gurgling sound of a beast drinking water in the stream. He was shocked to hear a human voice crying and went to the place and found the boy dying with his arrow.

The boy recognized him as the king of Kosala and told him that he swerved in his duty as a king which is to protect his subjects and not to kill them. He said that he was carrying water for his aged and blind parents and told the king to take it for them and fall at their feet and ask for forgiveness for killing their only son out of negligence. When the boy died Dasaratha did as he was told. The griefstricken parents of the boy wanted to be taken where their son lay dying and unable to bear the separation they mounted the funeral pyre of their son and died, after telling the king that because his sin though unpardonable was done in ignorance he may live but he would die of grief due to separation from his son like themselves. Dasaratha was young at that time to feel the full import of their curse but now he could see that what happened was the result of his curse.

So saying he died but the queens Kousalya and Sumithra thought that he had only fainted, as he often did after Rama had gone to forest and being fatigued, they also slept without knowing that the king had died. He was found dead by the attendants who came to wake him up in the morning and the hole palace was plunged in grief.

It was decided to send for Bharatha and they kept the body immersed in oil and sent word to Bharatha..

18. Bharatha arrivesOn the day when the messengers from Ayodhya arrived Bharatha was depressed despite the efforts of his friends to cheer him up with music ,dance, jokes etc. On being asked the reason he told them that he had a bad dream in which he saw his father with dishevelled hair and dirty body falling from a mountain into a pond of filth and covered with oil and eating rice mixed with sesame and plunging into the oil himself and later going towards south in a chariot drawn by donkeys. This portended that either himself or Rama or Lakshmana or the king would die. Not only that, he said, but he dreamt that the whole world was falling to pieces the oceans drying up, the moon falling down, the earth covered by darkness, a blazing fire suddenly extinguished, the earth quaking, the trees dry up, and the mountains vanishing in a smoke. So Bharatha feared a great calamity to happen. At that moment the messengers arrived.

Bharatha on seeing them asked anxiously about the welfare of Rama, Lakshmana and Dasaratha and enquired after Kousalya, referring to her as a noble, virtuous, righteous and the mother of valiant Rama and asked them about Sumithra also. Finally he spoke about his mother Kaikeyi, describing her as the one who loves herself, who is fierce and stung to anger quickly and thinkes herself as highly intelligent, thus showing that he was under no illusion about his mother.

The messengers told him that all were well in general and that good fortune awaited him and he was called to Ayodhya at once. Bharatha took the

Bharatha and Sathrugna travelled for seven nights and seven days and Valmiki gives a detailed description of the way from Kekaya to Ayodhya. The country of Kekaya is in the west of modern Punjab. From there Bharatha travelled to Ayodhya.

When they arrived in Ayodhya Bharatha was shocked to see the state of the city which looked gloomy without its usual festive appearance and Bharatha entered th palace of of his father and not finding the king there his anxiety increased. Then he went to the palace of his mother.

Kaikeyi was delighted on seeing him and embraced him and enquired after him and her relatives in Kekaya. Then Bharatha asked her the whereabouts of the king and she replied that the king has had a long and good life and had gone to join his forefathers. Bharatha fell on the floor and lamented for long and expressed his grief that he could not be at the side of his father at the time of his death and Rama and Lakshman alone had that good fortune and said that since his father was no more he would go and see Rama whom he considered as his father now and wanted to know the last message of his father to him.

Now Kaikeyi who might have had doubts by this time about the fulfillment of her design on seeing the pure heart of Bharatha and his love of Rama, was torn between the dire reality and her ambition. She did not dare to break the news to Bharatha all at once but had to ladle it out in instalments. She first said, in order to let Bharatha know that his father was not thinking about him a the time of death, that Dasaratha breathed his last by crying , “Ha Rama, Ha Lakshmana, Ha Jaanaki,” and saying that he was not destined to see them return and happy are those who will. Thereupon Bharatha asked her the reason why Rama and others were not by the side of the king during his last moments and Kaikeyi said that Rama put on hermit’s garments and went to forest which made Bharatha exclaim whether Rama committed any crime such as killing a brahmin or desiring someone’s wife etc. which was highly unlikely knowing Rama’s blemishless character.

Then Kaikeyi had no alternative but to tell him exactly what happened and urged him to accept the kingdom. If she had expected him to appreciate what she has done for his sake, that hope might have been diminished now but what transpired after Bharatha heard her was something she never bargained for, as otherwise she would never have done what she did.

BOOK REVIEW.

SUNDARA KANDA OF SRI VALMIKI RAAMAAYANA

Author : Sri. T. CHELLASWAMI . Price : Rs. 130/-

In search, found have I “beauty “

Sri. T. Chellaswamy presented the “sundara Kaanda “of Sri Vaalmiki Ramaayana as exhaustively as desired and his flow of language, like Mighty Brahmaputhra, makes the book a browsers deight.

Page 29: xa.yimg.comxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/2182732/164899079/name... · Web viewThe detailed word by word meaning of the above VarALi Pancharathnam and the four others are archived in the Bhakthi

The Sundara Kanda of Vaalmiki is the core of Rmayanaa’s remedy for maladies of human beings. Sri. Chellaswami gave the story of Two great personalities, Sri Hanuman and Sri Sita who were tried and tested by extraordinary circumstances.

The episode has been discussed and are blissfully beautiful and sets one on the path of perfection for obtaining Divine Grace through Surrender to the Supreme.

The story of Rama, Sita, Lakshmanan, Hanuman and others in the epic gives us the idea how to get rid of our egoism, the sence of I, my and mine.

The message is perfectly illustrated in this Sundara Kaanda to know that we are puppets mounted on a Time Machine and manipulated by the strings of joy and misery. None of us can escape their pull.

The characters of Raamaayana are stunding examples of this inexhorable law of life. That is how the law of Karma works.

Sri. Chellaswamy’s presentation of this elixir, “Sundara Kaanda “is the the paragon of Beaty and Virtue.

Moksha for all Moksha is sometimes erroneously used as a synonym for swarga. Attaining moksha is not to be confused with reaching Swarga, said Adur Asuri Madhavachari. Swarga is presided over by Indra. Moksha refers to Sri Vaikuntha, the place where there is only gnana. Swarga is perishable. During the deluge, Swarga too gets destroyed along with everything else. Only Lord Narayana is there at the time of the deluge. Therefore Sri Vaikuntha is eternal, but Swarga is not. And the only way to get to Sri Vaikuntha, that is the only way to attain moksha, is to surrender at the feet of Lord Narayana.

Who qualifies to offer surrender? Even birds and the beasts can go to Sri Vaikuntha, if someone does the act of surrender on their behalf. The Jiva is denoted by common nouns such as animal, bird, plant, tree and man. Only the external appearance has a name of reference. The Jiva has none. The atma is nameless. It has gnana and ananda. In fact the atma is the embodiment of gnana.

Then we may wonder, why it is that some Jivas are born as animals, some as birds, and why even among humans some have happy lives, and some do not. Jivas take a form according to their karma, and have experiences in accordance with their karma.

If the attainment of moksha is the goal, and surrender is the way to reach His feet, how does one go about doing the act of surrender? One must seek out an Acharya, without whose help one cannot attain the ultimate goal.

If animals can attain moksha, and if surrender is the way to attain moksha, how can animals, not being blessed with human intelligence, resort to surrender? How will they approach an Acharya and do what needs to be done to attain moksha? A human being can offer surrender on behalf of an animal.

Thus if a person rears, say, a cow, and is anxious that the Jiva that has taken the form of a cow should also attain moksha, he can offer surrender on behalf of the cow. The cow, after all is a name for the body which that particular Jiva has taken in this birth. Moksha is for the Jivatma, not for the external form.
