1. Against the background of the larger metaphysical truth outlined above, what is the best way to interact with the mundane world with its daily tedium of action and reaction (its consequence) and duality? The first premise of Krishna is that, in this mundane human realm, man, being a part of cosmos, which is ever in motion, is at the centre of vast unfolding action and his involvement in action is inevitable. If action, whose very nature is to bind one to its consequences, cannot be avoided, how can one engage in action without reaping the consequences of karma and retaining at the same time one’s serenity and peace of mind. Krishna’s prescription, amazingly simple but based on profound empirical observations, is that all actions in life are to be performed free from attachment to action, its agency and its fruits and thus without tainting it with the hopes and fears of actions performed. This is because what binds the soul is not action, but soul’s deep involvement in action attracted by and attached to the fruits of action. So long actions involve an egoistic orientation, so long the actions are binding, as this involves attachment to the fruits, which the soul experiences. It is the soul’s relish for such experiences that is responsible for its building up dispositions to act again and again in this way and thus committing itself to further existence and action thereby. Thus the teaching emphasises that karma operates only in the case of a person devoid of dispassion – an inner detachment of outlook. Freedom from karma bondage can be achieved in all actions, if performed against the background of the understanding and realisation of the “first step” explained earlier, namely, that one is not the body but the immortal and actionless spirit soul - Aatman (the soul or self) which is neither the doer nor the cause of actions and that It is Nature (Prakriti), which is the embodiment of activity. But because of ignorance (also called egoism) we identify our selves with the body-complex. By our anxiety for and attachment to work and its fruits (because of our ego), we are building up tendencies to act again and again in the same way, thus perpetuating our further existence to act and reap the fruits. This is the law of karma. This understanding is right perception in action. This indeed is the technique of converging the mind endlessly flirting in many directions, into one-pointedness of resolute and determined intellect (2.41), attained through the transcending the gun’as of prakriti. (2.45). It is thusKrishna goes on to the practical application of the wisdom about the nature and characteristics of the individual soul, to the discharging of one’s svadharma (duty) through the principle based on desirelessness (nishkaama karma) - karma yoga, which, in due course, helps to attain concentration of mind (meditation) by bringing about the purification of the mind, and consequent gaining of the true knowledge of the soul or the self. In the process Krishna explains the elements of yajna (spirit of worship), jnaana (knowledge) and bhakti (devotion) in karma yoga to strengthen the crowning doctrine of karma yoga – work is worship and ultimately leading to the crowning doctrine - “dedicated performance of duty is the true worship of God in the most religious sense. This is the reason the Sermon designates karma yoga as ‘yoga’ – ‘the active contemplative life of yogins’ to stress the meditative aspect of life to attain the beatitude of self-realisation.

2. Karma yoga – the Golden Mean between action and Action Renunciation:

2. Krishna has shown a golden mean, as it were, between the two ideals – pravritti marga (the way of activity) and nivritti marga (the way of action – renunciation). This golden mean is karma yoga (right action), which preserves the spirit of renunciation without abandoning activity. It is a life of intense activity and sublime serenity and supreme detachment without selfish impulses. It stands for activity in the spirit of renunciation. It is “not for renunciation of action”, but for “renunciation in action”. – (3, 4; 5.3, 7, 12; 6.1, 2): Both attachment and detachment are solely of the mind. Attachment leads to karma bondage and detachment leads to liberation (freedom from karma bondage). This is the doctrine of nishkaamakarma (desireless or detached performance of duty), which is based on a synthetic view of human nature and harmonises its varied contradictions. It does not suppress the senses and their activities but sublimates them to spiritual purpose. The senses are spiritualised and karma (work) gets transformed into kainkarya (service to God in man). Action of such a karma yogi, to use an analogy of S’ri Ramakrishna, can be likened to a burnt rope, which, though looks like any other ordinary rope in

shape, has lost its binding power. Such a karma yogi is ever contented (nithya tripthah), desireless (niraas'eeh), and humble (nirmamah).This spiritualisation of the pravritti marga is one of the important original contributions of the Gita.This is how Krishna reconciles the conflicts of the Mahabharata period between the thoughts and concepts of saamkhya school emphasizing nivritti marga (sanyaasa) and yoga school of pravritti marga (emphasizing karma).

||   Thirumangai AzhwAr     ||

 

Thirumangai AzhwAr was the last of the Twelve AzhwArs. His Taniyan is:

KaarthikE KrittikA Jaatham chathushkavi SikhAmaNimShaDprabhandha kruthaM Saarnga-mUrthim kaliyamAsrayE

Thirumangai AzhwAr known as Kaliyan, ParakAlan was born in Nala samvathsaram, VriscchikA Maasam, PourNami dinam. It was a Thursday and KritthikA Nakshathram was in ascendance. His place of birth is Thirukkurayaloor near ThiruvAli-Thirunahari. His given name at birth was Neelan. He was born in Chathurtha VarNam and he mastered svakula Vidhyai of DhanussAsthram. With his mastery of archery and weapons handling, he was formidable in fights. He became a chieftain of a district in the kingdom of ChOLAs and served the ChOLA king. He had four ministers with the names of ThALUthuvAN, Neer-mEl NadappAn, Nizhalil MaRaivAn and ThOlA Vazhakkan. With their help and the carrying power of his horse with the name of AadalmA, Neelan was able to drive away many enemies of the ChOLA king and enjoyed a honoured status in the ChOLA Kingdom.

Meanwhile, in a nearby village, there was a female child born as BhUmyamsai in an Aambal pond (Kumuda saras) and a Vaisyan took that child home and adopted it as his own. This child grew to be a beautiful maiden named Kumudavalli. The parents were worried about finding a suitable bridegroom for their daughter. Friends of Neelan mentioned to him about the extraordinary beauty of Kumudavalli. Neelan rushed to the house of the parents of Kumudavalli and requested the father to give his daughter away as his bride. The father asked his daughter about her consent and she replied that any one whom she could marry should have VishNu Chinhams (SamAsrayaNam), VishNu Bhakthi and should in addition perform TadhiyAraadhanams for the BhagavathAs.

Neelan was smitten with love for Kumudavalli and agreed to her conditions. He went to the Sannidhi of ThirunaRayUr PerumAL and prayed for SamAsrayaNa BhAgyam. ThirunaRayUr Nampi consented and pressed the

disc and conch on the shoulders of Neelan, presented ThirumaNN Kaappu and initiated Neelan into the meaning of Thirumanthiram. All of these happenings were not visible to the archakAs and the sEvArthis of ThirunarayUr Nampi. Neelan was blessed to receive SamAsrayaNam from the very hands of the Lord and returned home as a Sri VishNavan, wedded Kumudavalli and began the TadhiyArAdhana kaimkaryams.

The spies of ChOLa RaajA reported that Neelan was spending a lot of the revenues due to the king in TadhiyArAdhanams. The angry king ordered his soldiers to capture Neelan and bring him to the court. Thirumangai Mannan confronted the soldiers sent by the king and drove them away. The king himself came to fight Thirumangai Mannan and proved to be no match for his heroic commander. The king also had to withdraw from the battle. The king however tricked Thirumangai with conciliatory words and had him imprisoned. Thirumangai was very sad over the interruption to his TadhiyArAdhana Kaimkaryam and during his dream inside the prison, Lord VaradarAjA appeared before him and instructed him to come to Kaanchi to recover buried treasure close to His temple and gain his release from the prison.      Next Morning, Thirumangai proceeded to Kaanchi with a court servant, worshipped Lord VaradarAjan and dug up the treasure  pointed out by the Lord. He returned the funds used from the treasury of the king for TadhiyArAdhanams and used the rest of the funds for the future Kaimkaryam.

Soon the extra funds from Kaanchi were used up and Thirumangai had shortage of funds to carry on his TadhiyArAdhanam. With the counsel of the ministers (asAdhubhyO arTam aadhAya Saadhubhyas sampracchathi), Thirumangai appropriated funds from avaishNavAs and fed the VaishNavAs. Thirumangai did not touch any VaishNava dhanam. One day, Thirumangai did not encounter any avaishNavAs to gather money for the TadhiyArAdhanam and was very sad about the interruption to his Kaimkaryam.

The Dhivya Dampathis saw the plight of their Bhakthan and appeared before him as a rich avaishNava, newly-wedded couple. Thirumangai was happy to see them adorned with rich jewellery and ornaments. He robbed them and put all his plunderings in a box and tried to lift that box so he can go back to his village. Thirumangai could not lift that box, however much he tried. He was angry and thought that the bridegroom had cast a spell that made the box unliftable. Thirumangai drew his sword and demanded that the bridegroom reveal to him the manthram that he (the Bridegroom) had used to make that box super heavy. The bridegroom laughed and addressed Thirumangai as “Namm KaliyA" and asked Kaliyan to come closer so that he can repeat the manthram in to Kaliyan's ears. Lord Sriman NaarAyaNa recited the Moola Manthram in the ears of Kaliyan and blessed him with His Sevai with MahA Lakshmi and His parijanams. Thirumangai Mannan became at that instant Thirumangai AzhwAr and performed SaraNAgathi at

the sacred feet of the Dhivya dampathis. The AanandhAnubhava PravAham of Thirumangai found its release through Six Prabhandhams, which serve as the six angams for the four Tamizh vedams of Swamy NammAzhwAr. These Six prabhandhams set in the four modes of poetry known as Aasu, Chithram, Madhuram and Vistharam and earned him the name of Naalu Kavi perumAL. These six prabhandhams extolling Bhagavath GuNAnubhavam, SaraNAgathi and Bhagavath-BhAgavatha kaimkaryams are:1. Periya Thirumozhi2. ThirukkuRunthANDakam3.ThirunedumthANDakam4.ThiruvEzhukkURRirukkai5. SiRiya Thiumadal6. Periya ThirumadalThirumangai AzhwAr performed MangaLAsAsanam for 86 of the 108 dhivya dEsams. He performed many kaimkaryams such as the building of the ramparts for the Srirangam temple, construction of the dasAvathAra sannidhi at Srirangam and the creation of the Thiruadhyayana Uthsavam at Srirangam. He ascended to parama Padham from the dhivya desam of ThirukkuRunkudi.Let us reflect upon one of the ThirukkuRungudi Paasurams at the conclusion of this short celebration of the vaibhavam of this great AzhwAr:NinRa Vinayum Thuyarum keda Maamalar-yEnthi,senRu paNimin yezhumin Thozhumin ThoNDIrkALL ,yenRum iravum pahalum vari vanDu isai paada ,kunRin Mullai ManRidai nARum KURUMKUDIYE  Thirumangai Mannan ThiruvadigaLE Saranam

Today is Marghazi Kettai (JyeshtA) Nakshathram. Today is the birthday of the Ranganatha PathivrathA, Thondaradipodi. Hence, I will focus only on the two Divya Prabhandhams of this AzhwAr to seek his blessings on his day of birth.

He was a contemproary of Thirumangai AzhwAr. When latter was building the walls for the Srirangam temple, he found the building, where Thondaradipodi assembled the flowers to construct the daily Tulasi and flower garlands for Sri Ranganathan. Thirumangai redesigned his mathiL (Rampart) construction plans and skirted the space used by Thondardipodi, so that there will be no disturbance to Thondardipodi's Kaimkaryam. The grateful Thondaradipadi AzhwAr named the goad he used to pick the flowers from trees as " aruL mAri " , which is one of the names of Thirumangai. Such was the mutual respect among the two AzhwArs.

Thondardipodi AzhwAr had prArabdha Karmam, which made him deviate for a few months from the Thiru Maalai Kainkaryam for the Lord of Srirangam. The divine intervention of Sri Ranganaayaki and Sri RanganaathA brought him back on track and established his greatness as one, who was totally devoted to Sri Ranganathan only. As a result, he did not perform MangalAsAsanam on any ArchA mUrthy of Divya Desams other than Sri Ranganathan. He saluted Sri Ranganathan for his divine intervention this way :

: mAtharAr kayirkaNenum valayutp pattazhinthuvEnaip pOtharEyenru sollip punthiyirp puhunthu tanp paal Atharam peruhavyttha " azhagan . --- passage from ThirumAlai Prabhandham

He composed two prabhandhams revered as ThirumAlai and ThiruppaLLiyezhucchi. ThirumAlai has 45 pasurams and the ThiruppaLLIyezucchi has 10 paasurams that awaken the Lord in a spirit of SuprabhAtham. Just as Sage VisvAmthrA awakened Sri RamachandrA in Brahma MuhUrtham with the slOkam,

"KausalyA SuprajA RaamA pUrvA sandhyA pravarthatE Iutthtishta nara sArdhUla karthavyam daivamAhnikam II "

Thondaradipodi woke up Sri RanganAthan with fragrant Tulasi mAlai in his hands at the ancient temple of Srirangam. Sri VaishNavAs use these 10 paasurams of ThirupaLLIyezucchi to awaken the Lord at home and the temples every day.

One of our AchAryAs with the apt name of ThirumAlai AndAn has saluted Thiondardipodi, who gave us ThirumAlai prabhandham with the following Taniyan that eulogizes the AzhwAr for blessing us with the divya Prabhandham of ThirupaLLIyezhucchi :

(Meaning): I salute that Thondardipodi AzhwAr (BhakthAngrirENu) filled with superior Jn~Anam who composed the paasurams that awaken the king of kings reclining on AdhisEshan at Srirangam with the power of knowledge that He is none other than the Para VaasudEvan of Sri Vaikuntam.

This AzhwAr born at Mandangudi at ChoLa dEsam is revered as "VaNdu thiNartthum Vayal Tennarangatthu ammAnai paLLi uNartthum PirAn". Thiruvaranga PerumAL arayar saluted the AzhwAr with the above words. Arayar described the AzhwAr, who did parmOpakAram through his suprabhAtham paasurams as the one, who appealed to the Lord of Srirangam reclining on His serpent bed in the middle of fertile, green paddy fields at His divya dEsam (BhUlOka VaikuNtam) to wake up and bless the bhakthAs awaiting at dawn for His darsana soubhAgyam.

Sri SrikAnth has recently translated the meanings of the ten paasurams of ThirupaLLIyezucchi for the proceedings of the Denver sathsangham. Hence, I will focus on the inspiration that Thondardipodi AzhwAr provided to his successors to compose their own ThirupaLLiyezucchi Paasurams/Krithis/SlOkams.

I will illustrate the unmistakable imprint of AzhwAr's paasurams on three suprabhAthams, (VIz)., ThiruvenkatamudayAn , Sri Oppiliappan and Sri RamachandrA . ANDAL, who preceded Thondaradipodi has many evocative images of the morning scene at SrivillipPutthUr as she woke up Her Lord in ThiruppAvai. The passages in ThiruppAvai paasurams (6 thru 8 and 14) have beautiful descriptions of the morning scene that might have inspired Thondardipodi's ThiruppaLLiyezucchi paasurams.

I will start with Saint ThyagarajA's awakening of Sri RamA on the banks of Cauveri at ThiruvayAru with deep feelings of love and affection. The bhaavam blended with the words of the Krithis of SuperabhAtham set in rAgAs BhowLi and SaurAshtram are testaments to the Hrudhaya BhAshA of the Saint that he used to address his Ishta Daivatham.

In the morning rAgam BhouLi, he prays to the Lord to wake up: "mElukOvayya mamElukO Raama mElaina SeethAsamEtha naabhAgyamA"

Saint ThyagarajA describes the scene in front of his pUjAgraham this way in the BouLi krithi:

" Oh SeethA RaamA ! Pray , wake up to protect the universe ! Sages like NaaradA are singing about Your kalyANa guNAs. It is already day-break.Rise to partake of butter and milk. Celestial women are humbly praying for the opportunity to serve You. The jewele-set lights lit by the deities of eight siddhis, ANimA et al., have become dimmed. DevAs and kings are waiting to worship You ".

In his SourAshtra krithi, Saint ThyagarajA appeals to the Lord, who is the ocean of mercy to wake up. He points out that it is the time for Sun rise. He lets the Lord know that he is waiting with a golden cup filled with butter and milk. He begs the Lord to awaken and accept the naivEdhyam. He lets the Lord know that sages like NaradA, DevAs, BrahmA and Lord SivA are waiting to receive His blessings and to serve Him. He cajoles the Lord to wake up by pointing out that KubErA and the guardians of all directions have assembled in front of the pujA graham to learn statecraft from Him.

The assembly of throngs of BhakthAs, DevAs and demi-gods for the SuprabhAtha darsanam of the Lord is a theme common to ThiruppAvai and ThirupaLLiyezucchi:

In the sixth paasuram, Thondaradipodi decribes the 12 AdhityAs with their bejewelled chariots, the 11 RudrAs, Lord SubramanyA, the 49 Maruth gaNAs, the 8 Vasus, the 33 crores of dEvAs assembled in front of Sri RanganathA's front gates and jostling for positions to get a closer darsanam of the Lord after He awakens from His yOga NidhrA.

The seventh, eigth and the ninth verses describe the arrival of Indra, Sundarar, VdhyAdharar, Sanga Nidhi, Padma Nidhi, KaamadhEnu, Holy sages, KinnarAs, GandharvAs, GarudAs, KimpurushAs, SiddhAs, YakshAs and Thondardipodi with garlands in hand and waiting for the Lord of Srirangam to wake up from His NidhrA.

We hear the echos of these passages in the suprabhAtham of Saint ThyagarAjA, PrathivAdhi Bhayankaram's SuprabhAtham on Lord SrinivAsan of Thirumalai and the Suprabhaatham slOkams of ThiruviNNagarappan (Sri Oppiliappan).

The fifteenth slOkam in this series describes AcharyA Naathamuni, YaamunA and RaamunjA waiting for the Lord's darsanam with folded hands after their sacred bath in the AhOrAthra PushkaraNi of Oppiliappan Koil:

They are now waiting at the entrance after being counted by the cane strokes of VishvaksEnA. O Lord of VenkatAchalA! Please wake up ! May this be an auspicious dawn to Theee!

grantha karthAs of SuprabhAthams for the ArchA murthys of Divya Desams of the Lord.

Thondaradipodi AzhwAr was not a prolific composer of Paasurams like Thirumangai and NammAzhwAr. He left us with only 45 verses in the divya Prabhandham revered as ThirumAlai.

Inspite of the small number of Paasurams, the AzhwAr packed them with rasAnubhavam of a BhakthA climbing the ladder of SadhanA and sOdhanA.

For instance , we come across his VairAghyam , Nitya-Anithya vivEkam , bhagavatha prasamsA (praising of Bhagavathas and their dharmam) , Kama garhaNA (condemnation of sensual pleasures) , artha garhaNaa (Condemnation of material pursuits) , bhakthi mahima prasamsA (Praising of the supremacy of Bhakthi) , Naama MahAthmya (exaltation of the Lord's names) , asadh bhakthi garhaNA (Condemnation of pOli BhagavathAs and rituals , bare learning without devotion to the Lord) , ananya Bhakthi (exclusive devotion to Sri RanganathA), rupa -svarUpa , GuNa prasamsA of the Lord of Srirangam and other moods of a devout bhakthA of the Lord such as NirvEdam (sorrow over lost time chasing worldly pursuits at the expense of devoting time to the worship of the Lord) , NaicchAnusandhAnam (self-depreceation) , vitarkA (cogitation over what is going to happen if the Lord does not come to his rescue), DhainyOkthi (plaintive pleading for Lord's grace) and mahA viswasam.

In the very first Paasuram , the AzhwAr is in an ebullient mood of fearlessness arising from his success in his SadhAnA of reciting the names of the Lord and restraining his sensory organs from distractions. He confidently declares that he has placed his feet over the head of Yama (the Lord of Death) and his servants and is roaming fearlessly around fortified by the power of the Lord's nAmAs.

The power of the NaamA of the Lord and utter trust in the naamAs of the Lord reminds one of the experience and declaration of Saint ThyagarAjA in the charaNam of his KedAra rAga krithi, " Raama ! neepai thanaku prEma bhOdhu " :

jananee janakApthulanyulu dhanakanaka Guru vElpuludinamu neevE yanumAtalu anaga nivi naa bhUshaNamulu

(Meaning) : The words (naama Japam) that I utter daily that You alone are my father , mother , friend , wealth , gold , Guru and dEvAs constitute my ornaments (and armour).

In his second paasuram ( pacchai maamalai pOl mEni ) , AzhwAr declares that the anubhavam of Sri RanganAthA' s soundharyam leaves him fully satisfied and makes him totally disinterested in other blessings (boons) such as becoming the king of dEvAs and ruling Indra lOkam.

One hears the echos of this vivEkam in one of the CharaNams of Saint ThyagarAjA's SavEri Krithi ( 12th AND 13 th CharaNam of krithi , Sri Raama RaamAsrithalamu gAmA nEramA bhrOva BhaaramA ? ) The particular charaNam is as follows :

nEmamuga tOli nOmuna dorakina Raamuni JithakAmuniseeluni sadhguNasAlini juchDE chAlunu ANYAMELANU ?

( Meaning ) : It is enough if I have darsanam of Sri RamA , whom I have obtained as a result of my worship in previous birth . He is the conqueror of desires , the model of rectitude and the embodiment of all virtues . WHY NEED ANYTHING ELSE ?

One can find many similar pasaages in Saint ThyagarAjA's krithis that are echos of Thondaradipodi's paasura vAkhyams. It is a wonderful treat to compare the experiences of these two parama ViashNavAs across centuries.

I will post some reflections on Thondaradipodi AzhwAr's Thirumaalai in this posting On his birthday. This divya prabhandham is considered the essence of VishNu Dharmam, a work in Sanskrit.

ThondaradipodiAzhwAr is recognized as the amsam of the VanamAlai (Vaijayanthi) that the Lord wears. This Maalai of the Lord is considered as a potent VaishNavi - asthram that destroys the mahA paapams and sets one on the course to Sri Vaikuntam. Therefore, it is the most sacred maalai ( ThirumAlai ) and assures us freedom from fear of death and helps us attain immortality and enjoy the bliss of paramAnandham at Sri Vaikuntam through Nithya Kainkaryam to Sriman NaarAyaNA. With all these symbolism in mind , Thondaradipodi , who was engaged in Maalai Kainkaryam for the Lord of Srirangam named his prabhandham as ThirumAlai.

For Sri VaishNavAs, an understanding and practise of the following great doctrines are considered essential to gain the boon of Moksham: The prabhAvam of the Lord's NaamAs , the glory of those who are engaged in Naama-Sankeerthanam , the supermacy of Bhagavathas and the redeeming sanctity of the dust ( rENus ) of the feet of those BahgavathAs. ThirumAlai focusses on these most important doctrines for our benefit.

Regarding the Naama MahimA and particularly its importance in Kali Yigam is indicated by the following slOkam:

" HarEr nAmaiva nAmaiva nAmaiva mama bhEshajam Ikalou nAsthyEva nAsthyEva gathiranyathA II "

This statement with its triple emphasis on the greatness of the nAmAs of Hari , as the sure medicine for the disease of SamsAram , is very emphatic .

The sacredness of the dust of the BhagavathA's feet led Thondaradipodi to choose that name. The uniqueness of the angri rENU of the BhagavathAs has been emphasized in mahA BharathA , PurANAs , and SamhithAs repeatedly.

The act of driving away one's paapAs by wearing the Sripaadha Theetham containing the dust of the BhagavathA''s feet is known as Bhagavadh-Bhaktha paadOdaka nisEvanam. This act is described by the SaasthrAs to be the equivalent of MahA PrAyascchittham and is prescribed as being far more powerful than bath in the waters of holy Ganga originating from the Lord's sacred feet.

The relationship of Thondardipodi with the Lord of Srirangam was a special one. He was a devout BrahmachAri deeply involved in the Garland Kainkaryam for the Lord of Srirangam like PeriyAzhwAr before him. He " fell from virtue and was redeemed " by the most merciful Lord of Srirangam . He was forever grateful for that intervention by the Lord. He refers these autobiographical incidents and his near spirtual death as a result of his disastrous encounter with DevadEvi in paasuram 16 of ThirumAlai :

SoothanAi kaLvanAhi dhUrtharOdu isaintha kaalammatharAr kayark kaNN yennum valayuL pattu azhundhuvEnaipOtharEyenru sollip punthiyil puhumdhutann paal Atharam peruha vaittha AzhahanUr arangamanrE ?

(Meaning) : At the time , When I spent my hours as a gambler and as a thief and was trapped in the net of a woman's fish-like eyes , I was hopelessly lost . At that time of spiritual disaster , was it not the beautiful Lord of Srirangam , who called me to His side and entered into my mind and made my love for Him grow many fold and thus rescued me ?

In the 25th verse of ThirumAlai ( KuLitthu mUnRanalaiyOmpum ---) , he makes another indirect reference to what happened to him and appeals movingly for the SaraNyan's dayA. The meaning of this verse is as follows:

O Lord of Srirangam ! I have lost my qualifications to be a Brahmin (VarNAsrama Dharmam) that required me to take thrikAla SnAnams and offer worship to the three Agnis in a faultless manner (without manthra lObham). I do not possess the aathma J~nAnam. With respect to Thee, I have become devoid of love for You. Which way can I (without compassion and virtue ) regain my lost status ? O Lord of anantha KalyANa GuNAs ! O Lord of Srirangam with the hue of the ocean ! I am imploring You with my loud appeals to make me the object of Your DayA and thus save me from this pitiable state.

In the thirty third verse, once again the AzhwAr recalls with a shudder the disaster that happened to him and his prayer that was answered by the Lord of Srirangam (MeyyallAm pohavittu virikuzhalAril pattu---). Here , the

AzhwAr movingly describes himself as a false one three times in the last line of the paasuram :

" PoyyanEn vanthu ninrEn poyannEn poyannEnE "

The triple mention of his falsity (duplicity) refers to the mental, vocal and physical falsity. He describes himself as a " pOzhkkan " (one who has transgressed and lost his way). Kaayika, Vaachika and Manaseekaaparadhams are covered here . The meaning of the entire slOkam is as follows:

O Supreme Lord of Srirangam! I am a pathetic one. I have let go of all that is true and worthy of preservation and got myself caught in the snares of women (DevadEvi). Fie me! Out of desire to receive Thy grace, I am standing now before You shamelessly .Alas ! False am I ! False am I ! False am I !

AzhwAr's prArabdha KarmAs got him ensnarled in the trap set by DevadEvi, who made a wager with her companion to attract the devout VipranArayaNA performing ThirumAlai kainkaryam to the Lord of Srirangam. She won in her wager and the AzhwAr lost his spiritual footing and wandered away from the Lord. He was saved from this disaster by the most compassionate Lord Himself at the prompting of His concerned Consort , Sri RanganAyaki .

Elsewhere in ThirumAlai, Thondaradipodi cries out to us in the role of a compassionate AchAryA and appeals to us to become the object of love of the most compassionate Lord and perform kainkaryam to Him and His BhagavathAs. He condemns false devotion, avaidhika mathams and declareshis ananya bhakthi in many of the ThirumAlai paasurams. I will cover some of them and relate them to the experience of another parama VaishNavA, Saint ThyagarAja in the concluding post on Thondardipodi AzhwAr.

Tvashta, SthavishtahThe holy names of Sriman narayana is transcendentally blissful ,as it bestows all spiritual benedictions. In 'Apadam apahatharam Sthothram, sloka 7 Achyutanada Govinda Namocharana bheshitah / nasyanthi sahala roga satyam satyam vadamyaham ,which is meant as the mere recital names Achyuta, Ananda , Govinda, is a powerful and wholesome medicine to destroy all diseases and as let us swear as this is true, this is true. In the present world, with the advancement of many science and technology , diseases are also increasing daily. This is mainly due to attraction on artificial things decaying natural growths ,and environmental pollution in all parts of the world. Due to this our health is being spoiled in many ways. Hence it is bounden duty to pray for our healthy life .SrimanNarayana blessing in standing pasture in 60 thirukkovil , sitting seva in 21 kshetrams and in sayana Thirukkolam reclining in 27 sthalams of the 108 Divyadesams (106 Tirupathis on earth ) . Sriman Narayana gives Darsan as moolavar and uthsavar , in various alankarams, vahanams, sevais, thirukkolams just to please devotees and is ready to bless us through our namasmaranam. Hence this can easily be achieved through SriVishnu Sahasranam Parayanam, not only in the above temples but also in any Abhimana Sthalams .If health condition is not permitting to move out from the house, one can recite in home considering it as a holy place . .

In our Dharma sthothram 52nd nama is Tvashta . This nama means as one who created all the different forms and names in this universe ,and .One who makes gross things of huge dimensions into minutest particles At the time of the world's dissolution the entire gross world folds into its back into its subtler elements until at last pure objectless space alone comes to remain. .In Gita 13.22, upathrushtanumantha cha bartha boktha maheswara as He has been spoken of as the witness, true guide sustainer of all . The name supreme eternal is thus called in

different names due to different causes In Gita 8.9, Lord described Himself as sarvasya svatharam He who contemplates on all wise ageless being ,the ruler of all, subtler than subtle the universal sustain-er possessing a forum beyond the darkness of ignorance.In Gita we can find Sriman narayana as Omniscient, ,Most ancient, over ruler, subtler than subtlest, sustainer, form inconceivable, self luminous,and beyond all maya. All these superior characters of Sriman narayana are explained in detail in Periya Thirumozhi in which Thirumangai Azhwar who went to 80 Thiruppathis by foot and sang in 1253 pasurams.

The next nama is Shravishta which is one who exceedingly huge in size.Sriman narayana has become the entire universe of gross things and beings. The whole world of gross beings and things is itself the form of Sriman narayana ,similar to the complete waves in the ocean .Sriman narayana is beyond birth and death. The process of His birth is not the same as in the case of Jivathma. He simply enacts the sport of birth in order too draw and attract the minds of His bakthas through His divine sports and to delight them by His sight ,touch and speech as an act of special Grace to spread His fame throughout the world and thereby wipe out the sins of the people through the hearing, chanting and remembrance of the same through killing the evil doers. .Nammazhwar's Tiiruvaimozhi 6.7.1 “ Unnum Sorum parugum nir tinnum, vetrilai ellam Kannan reminds this as 'to His devotee, all is Krishna Food - eaten to satisfy the appetite, water – drunk to quench the thirst, and betel leaves consumed after the food, are all Krishna only in their case. Saying His name, speaking of His qualities, and thinking of Him, His devotee will feel the hunger and the thirst and all other needs satisfied .The virtues ,glory truth and mystery of God cannot be precisely stated . Whatever said is just like revealing the sun by means of earthly light. They are so incomprehensible, infinite and transcendent that none but Him can know them in their entirety and reality.

Sriman Narayana pervades the three worlds ,the world of matter the world of finite selves in bondage and the world of liberated selves as their inmost soul and maintains them in existence. So He must be construed as different from all others ,as they are pervaded and maintained by Him.

Translation:

Oh young one, wake up. Don't you hear the chirping of birds and the loud sound of conch blown at the temple of the Lord. The sages and yogis get up slowly and chant the name of Hari, who is in their heart and who is resting in

the bed of Seshnag in the middle of the ocean, the same Hari who killed poothana and sakatasura. The sound of the namasankirtana is tumultuous on account of the intensity of devotion.

Commentary:

In the first five pasurams the pavainonbu was extolled . In the next ten describe the arousal of the girls who are devotees of Krishna and who wish to observe the pavainonbu.This implies the thruppaLLi ezucchi of the bhagavathas for Bhagavatkainkartya.

Why should one go in a goshti or group to worship the Lord?

1.An ardent devotee will forget himself in the presence of the Lord and will even lose the power of speech and so to have both feet on the ground they wish to go in groups, as Kula sekhara says in Mukundamala,

. baddhenaanjalinaa nathena Sirasaa gaathraissaromodgamaihkanThena svaragadgadhena nayanenodgeerNabaaShpaambunaanithyam tvaccharaNaaravindayugala Dhyaanaamrthaasvaadhinaamasmaakam saraseeruhaaksha sathatham sampadhyathaam jeevitham

May our life be spent with folded hands, head bowed down in salutation, limbs in ecstasy, voice muffled with emotion and our eyes following with tears each day imbibing the nectar of the remembrance of your lotus-feet.

2.Moreover any experience of joy is doubled when shared.

3.Also anything delicious should not be enjoyed alone. Bharatha, among the sins he enumerates that would befall to him if he had any suspicion of the intention of his mother, cites the sin of eating a delicious sweet without sharing with others in the house.

4.It is always appropriate to approach the Lord preceded by bhagavathas.

5.Women by nature are softhearted and want to share their joy with others.

PuLLum silambina - Birds have better sense of time than humans and wake up before them.

It may have been argued by the girl whom Andal tries to awaken that the birds woke up hearing the churning of the curd by the gopis, who perhaps being old could not sleep. So the next sign of dawn is cited.

Pullaraiyan kovilil veLLaiviLi sangin pEraravam - PuLLaraiyan may mean Garuda in the sense of his being the king, araiyan of the birds, puLL. It could also mean the Lord Himself as He is the kO , master of the puLLaraiyan, that is, Garuda. KOil means the il,abode of the kO.

The reason why the word puLLaraiyan is used maybe due to the auspiciousness of the garudadwani, the sound made by garuda and the darsana of garuda.

The worship of Garuda is extolled as being the antidote for diseases, troubles from enemies and all misfortunes. It is said that when Garuda flaps his wings the planets are moved.(vide: Garuda panchasath of Desika)

VeLLaiviLi Sangu is white conch used in the temples. The white colour stands for suddhasatthva.

PEraravam - The sound of the conch calling the devotees for worship sounds magnificent to them as it rouses the Lord in their hearts.

PiLLaai - The word may refer to a young girl or one who is new in the group of devotees. Commentators see a reference to Periazvar by this term as he was like a child, piLLai, in forgetting the glory of the Lord and sang Pallandu for Him out of fear for someone casting of evil eye on Him. PuLLumsilambina may refer to the garden in which Periazvar reared for worship.

PEy mulai najundu refers to Poothana and kaLLa chagadam, to sakatasura.Krishna feigned sleep when Poothana was feeding Him because she should not get His kataaksha. Inspite of that through His sparsa, body contact itself she went to a better loka. Desika says in his Yadhavabhyudhaya that for those who even think about this episode will not be born again

When Krishna kicked at the asura who came in the form of a cart-wheel it went to pieces but not even its dust remained, says Narayana Bhattadri in Narayaneeyam. This, he says, happened because the asura merged with the sudhdhasattva of Bhagavand ue to the youch of His feet and therefore there was no rajas, with a pun on the word rajas which means dust.

veLLatthu aravil thuyilamarndhavitthinai uLLatthu kondu- The Lord is the vitthu , the seed or origin of the world, reclining on Adisesha in the milky ocean, whom the sages and yogis preserve in their hearts. So they are getting up from their sleep slowly meLLaezundhu in order not to disturb Him.

The idea that this pasuram refers to Periazvar conforms to the expression veLLatthu aravil-----uLLatthu kondu as per his pasuram in which he says 'aravtthamaliyinodum azagiyapaarkadalodum

aravindhappavaiyum thaanum agampadi vandhu pugundhu,' (Periazvar thirumozi-452) describing how the Lord entered his heart along with adiseah ,parkadal and Lakshmi.

Hari enra pEraravam - When all the sages and yogis in all the worlds chant 'Hari' it becomes a tumultous sound.

ULLam pugundhu kuLirndhelO rempavai - the hari nama enters through the ear and reaches the heart and like cool showers bring solace to the devotee freeing him from the woes of the world. Rukmini says in the bhagavatha in her letter to Krishna, ' sruthvaa gunaan bhuvanasundhara srnvathaam the nivisya karnavivaraih haratho angathaapam.' To those who hear His gunas they enter the ears and relieves the torment of the body due to the ills of samsara. The angathapa here is the viraha or separation from the Lord for the devotee.

The spiritual meaning of this pasuram is explained thus: PuLL refers to Hamsavathara when the Lord took the form of the Hamsa, swan, to teach the sanakadhi, the Brahmathathva. silambanam is the speech of the Lord. Since this pasuram has reference to Periazvar it reminds us of his verses in the sengeeraipparuvam where he gives importance to the hamsavathara by saying, 'annamum meenuruvumaaLariyum kuraLumaamaiyumaanavane, ennavalam kalaivai aaduga sengeersai,' thus mentioning the hamsavathara before matsya,and other avatharas.(Periazvar thrumozi-74)

PuLLraiyan can also mean that He is the master of all of us who are termed as puL in the sense of beings like birds and animals without jnana.

Kovilis the ashtakshar mantra while the sangu, conch is praNavasvarupa.

Poothana stands for avidya, ignorance giving rise to ahamkara mamakara.

KaLLAcchgadam refers to the indriyas which takes the sarira, the cart to evil path while veLLattharavu is the sea of samsara and the Lord is feigning sleep inside our heart ready to wake up the moment we call Him. Hari enra peraravam is the call for help of the devotee to the Lord to come and destroy, (haraNath HariH,) the duhkha.

** IraNDAvathu Aayiram: Three Prabahndhams( Kaliyan’s Periya Thirumozhi , Thirukkurum-TANDakam, Thirunedum-TANDakam) :     1134 Paasurams ** MoonRAvathu Aayiram : ThiruvAimozhi of Swamy NammAzhwAr: 1102 Paaurams ** Fourth Aayiram : IyaRppaa , Starting with Mudhal AzhwArs and concluding with 108 Paasurams of RaamAnuja NooRRandhAti : 817 Paasurams . Integrated Total : 947+ 1134+ 1102+ 817 = 4,000 Paasurams . In another sampradhAyam , Sri Ramanuja NooRRandhAti is not included among the Naalayira Dhivya Prabhandham . Here , IyaRpaa is linked to the MoonRAvathu Aayiram and after completing it , the  108 Paasurams of RaamAnuja NooRRanthAti are recited as a separate unit . Next is “ the Fourth  Aayiram “ that covers Swamy NammAzhwAr’s ThiruvAimozhi . In this SampradhAyam , the noninclusion of the 108 Paasurams of RaamAnuja NooRRandhAti (RN)  for the 4000 count is made up by counting Siriya Thirumadal ( 40 Paasurams) and Periya Thirumadal ( 78 Paasurams ) in the two line ( IraNDDu KaNNi ) count mode . This anjali will never fail to yield such a result and will be the cause of all auspiciousness. This anjali makes the Lord’s heart melt with the dayaa for His bhaktan . This anjali is indeed the gesture of a Prapannan , who has surrendered his every thing and requests the Lord to accept them all : “ Oh Lord ! Padma reminded GodhA PirAtti in a grateful manner that the madhura vaak to sing about Her arises from Her karuNA katAksham ( Bhavathee katAkshAth makarandhamucha: vAcha: sphuranti ). She sung every where about the mahimai of the SrI sooktis of Soodikkoduttha NaachiyAr and inspired others to strengthen  their own GodhAnjalis . She instructed her sihyAs/sishyais about the Sri Sooktis of Andal serving as the means for the upliftment of the chEtanams of the world ( Visva upajeevyam) . She remembered that the insight provided by Swamy Desikan that the southern direction ( dakshiNa

dhig) became loftier than the northern direction through Her avatAram in the south ( Tava avatArAth dakshiNa dhig api sarva uttaraa bhavati). She sang about the lofty status attained by Vatapatra Saayee through the adornment of the garlands worn earlier by Her ( yesha: Rangapati: soubhAgya sampadh abhishEka mahAdhikAram Bibharti). Aditya Hridayam – Meditation of the Sun in the Heart

Aditya Hridayam, or Aditya Hrdaya, is a hymn dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun God) Valmiki Ramayana. Aditya Hridaya consists of 31 verses and is found in the 107th chapter of Yuddha Kanda of Ramayana. Cloves ( Kirambu ).Clove is the one of the most ancient and valuable spices of the World.Cloves of commerce come from unopened flower buds which are picked by hand. They are

green in colour when picked and aquire adark brown colour on sun-drying. Unwrinckled brownish-black cloves with a plump and rather rough crown indicate a superior quality.

It is the timing of picking the cloves that determinates their quality. If picked early, an inferior product, Khoker cloves, is obtained. If delayed, the flowers get pollinatted and fruition occurs. The clove oil contains a high percentage of eugenol, a naturally occurring anti-oxidant which prevents foods from turning rancid.

Usage of Clove : * Muscular cramps : Apply clove oil on the affected parts or Apply clove oil as poultice on the affected areas.

Toothache : Soak a piece of cotton wool in few drops of clove oil. Press on affected areas.

Stomach upset, pitta aggravation : Pour 2 to 3 drops of clove oil over sugar candy and eat.

Cholera : Boil 1 tsp cloves in 10 teacups of water till it is reduced to 5 teacups. Take in draughts frequently.

Throat irritation due to coughing : Chew 2 to 3 cloves with a pinch of common salt.

Nausea : Mix powder of fried cloves in 1 teacup water and drink.

Ivargal TiruvakkuPraised by enemies too

There can be no one who does not melt upon hearing the qualities of Rama. Therefore it is quite understandable that those who were fortunate to have lived in His time, and been a part of His life during His avatara, should have borne great love for Him. He was spoken of kindly even by those who were ill disposed towards Him, said Kurichi Sreenarayanachariar,in a lecture. If our loved ones and family and friends love us, that is nothing to be surprised about. But if a person is praised even by his enemies, then he must have had special qualities. Rama had many such endearing qualities, that made friend and foe alike, respect Him.When Rama is dropped off at the forest, even the horses that draw the chariot are reluctant to go back. Plants wither in their sorrow. Even aquatic plants dry up, because the water has become hot with Rama's separation.Rama's words to Sumantra, show His magnanimity and concern for others, two qualities that are present in Him in such large measure, that they alone are enough to justify the kind of affection everyone bore for Him. He asks Sumantra to convey to Dasaratha His respects. There is not a trace of bitterness in Rama's attitude to the father who banished Him to the forest. He has a request to Kausalya. She is to take good care of Dasaratha. Bharata is to be treated as a king. His message to Bharata is that he should not be unkind to Kaikeyi. Bearing Rama's messages to the members of his family who are still in Ayodhya, Sumantra leaves the forest.Dasartha dies, heartbroken, and Bharata, who is visiting his maternal uncle, is summoned. He is shocked at the turn of events, and asks Kaikeyi why Rama has been banished. Only one who has committed unforgivable sins would have been banished. Had Rama committed treason? Had He coveted another's wife? Why then had He been exiled? Kaikeyi, although she is the cause for Rama's exile, tells Bharata that Rama is incapable of even looking at another man's wife. Who but Rama would impress people so much, that even if they were jealous of Him, even if they had caused Him difficulties in a fit of anger, they would still be unable to criticize Him?
